Space by Bill Corey Pentair Water Training Institute I use this picture to explain how a pump works. The guy who drew this picture for me worked for our company; he is retired now. He was excited he could do something without a pump. Even though there is no pump in this picture, it really helps to understand how they work. Here is the story: When you go into deep space, in other words, you break through the earth’s atmosphere, you start floating because in space there is no atmosphere. If I were to go to the back of the shuttle dressed in street clothes and say, “Open the shuttle bay doors”, what would happen to me? We all know the answer to that question, I would die! The void of outer space has no atmosphere, and it would pull all the atmosphere out of my body and I would die. Because I used the word “pull” it made someone ask, “What exactly would happen”? The answer is, your blood would boil right in your body. I told them I once I saw a movie where a husband, wife, and a few others where in deep space and the husband got a little too far away from the ship. He knew he would not be able to get back, but his wife was sure she could get him. To stop her from throwing her life away, he said good- bye, opened his visor, and allowed the void to take him. In the film, he turned to stone. So I told the group it was much bet- ter that way than to see what really would have happened - blood and guts all over. Of course someone had to ask, “How did he open his visor?” I reminded them it was a movie - how did they think it happened? Of course, our astronaut knew this and put his space suit on, which kept him alive. The next questions to ask are: “Why aren’t we dead? What is preventing those of us on earth from being killed from the void of outer space?” The answer is, of course, the atmos- phere! The atmosphere is made of air and water vapor. The closer you get to sea level, the heavier the atmosphere gets. So we give our spaceman a pressure gauge and tell him when he gets to the perfect void of space, to set it at zero. When he steps off his craft and hands us the gauge at Cape Kennedy, what will it say? Stay tuned next month to find out!
