Authenticity by Tim Connor Do you know who you really are? If you said yes, you are one in a million who really knows who they are (I just made that up). Seriously, ever met someone who said, “This is who I am”? Research over the years in the areas of emotional, physical, and psychological behavior have indicated very few of us (and yes it could be 1 in 10,000,000 or more) really are in accurate touch with who we really are. What does this have to do with authenticity? Personality tests have proven we are all three people - who we believe we are, how we are perceived by others, and how we want to be perceived by others. Con- fused? Well no wonder people can be heard saying, “Who are you really?” How can we be authentic if we don't know who we really are? I've pondered this for years as a speaker and trainer, and my conclusion is we tend to be authentic in the area of how we want to be perceived by others. I have been in front of over a million people in 25 countries and worked with hundreds of clients during my career, and I can't tell you how many times I was misled by people's words versus their actions. For me, authenticity is simply the congruence of your words with your ac- tions - whatever they are and no matter how they are perceived by others or whether someone else likes them or agrees with them or not. A really serious issue in society today is the idea of political correctness and its impact on our ability to say what we think, say what we mean, or say what we believe regardless of the interpretation of others. This is seriously impacting the concept of authenticity. If we keep heading down this path, it won't be long before we won't have a clue as to what someone else is saying or how it relates to who they are or believe they are. A few questions: 1) Know anyone who is a zero on the authenticity or realness scale? Is this you? 2) Is the acceptance of others a major motivator in your life? 3) Do you always say what you mean and mean what you say?
