Safety Spotlight: Surviving Winter Weather by Scott Cosby The leaves are beginning to change; we are in the fall months quickly approaching winter, and drill crews need to be ready to stay safe during these months. In this article, we’ll examine some items to have on hand, winter driving, and surviving the cold. The American Red Cross, National Weather Service (NWS), and other agencies suggest certain items for emergency winter travel supplies. Here's a list of what should be in the vehicle: R Battery-powered radio and extra batteries R Flashlight and extra batteries R Blankets or sleeping bags R Extra dry clothing R First aid kit and manual R Vehicle booster cables R Charged cell phone R Flares and/or reflective emergency triangles R Bottled water and snacks R Knife R Shovel R Sack of sand or kitty litter for tire traction R Tow rope Winter driving demands an alert driver. Remove ice and snow from all glass surfaces - other motorists need to be able to see you. Make sure to adjust your driving speed and distances between other vehicles. Ice and snow demand greater stopping distances. Remember, overpasses and bridges freeze more quickly than other parts of the roadway. Keep the vehicle slow and steady, and know the route before leaving. There’s always a possibility of being stranded in winter conditions. Wear several layers of loose-fitting clothing to insulate your body. The layers will trap warm, dry air inside. Hypothermia is a condition in which the body loses more heat than it produces. Keep calm and move your arms and legs to prevent hypothermia, and get out of the cold as soon as possible. Educate your drilling crews on this topic and help them stay safe in the field during winter conditions. For more information, consult the NWS Web site http://weather.noaa.gov/ . There are also wide varieties of sources through search engines concerning this topic, as well.
