Okay, this month is finally time to discuss some of the really stupid things salespeople do when they are trying to convince others to buy their products or services. If you sell, ask yourself what are the dumbest things you do? Last month, I was shopping for a new computer and the sales guy said to me, “Let me be honest with you.” I responded, “Since you don’t say that all the time, am I to assume when you don’t say it you are lying?” His response: “No I always tell the truth, that’s just a habit.” RIGHT!!!! I remember years ago when I was buying my first sailboat, as I walked into the show- room in shorts, sandals, t-shirt, and not having shaved that morning, the guy gave me the once-over and then ignored me. I guess he thought because I didn’t dress properly, I wasn’t a good prospect for one of their boats in inventory. So I purchased my $100,000 sailboat from a different dealer. Go figure. Do you know, one of the major reasons 1500 businesses fail every day in this country? I’ll tell you. It’s because they are hoping “word of mouth” is enough. Or having a Facebook page will guarantee success. HELLO! If you want customers, you have to actively pursue them. Bought a car lately? A home? I was with a friend last week while they were shop- ping for a new home. As we walked through the house, the realtor kept saying, “This is the bathroom, this is the kitchen, this is the bedroom.” Do you know the difference between all of these? I do. Come on - give me a break. Okay, just one more: I know a woman in sales who is a real pro and has the best sales results in her organization. The guys - well they assumed she is successful because she is hot. Boys, hot is one thing. Good and professional is another when you are trying to get several thousand dollars from a potential client.
