Water Shortage We have been drilling wells which produce 1000 gallons per minute (gpm) and over, starting in about 1952. This year, the wells we drilled pumped 2350 gpm only because it is all the pump can do. Then, after some figures, the estimated flow rate was 5000 gpm or better. The elevation is 4600 feet - a high desert in the Oregon outback, and the wells are about 200 feet deep. I get phone calls from lots of places. One question was, “What do you think about the water shortage?” My answer was that I don’t think much about it, but since asked, I guess I could think about it. The caller said, “Well, my friend and I are saving water in buckets, barrels, and all kinds of containers. We have barrels and buckets all over the place. What would you think would be a good amount to save?” I replied, “It sounds to me like you have saved up a good amount already.” When he asked again about the water shortage, I said the scientific facts from my fifth grade weekly reader stated the ice caps on the poles are melting and there is more liquid water than ever. The caller wanted to know what that had to do with anything when there’s a water shortage, a drought. “What water shortage?” I asked. “It’s raining over here. Where are you?” He was in Southern California and the sun was shining. That’s not a drought. The sun always shines down there; it’s normal. I told him if his well is going dry, just drill a new one in a better aquifer. We had a good time on the phone. He knew I was joking, and we had fun. A drought is a serious thing, but we have no water shortage except in areas where they need better wells.
