The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Why do so many people say so many stupid things so often?Are they really stupid or is there something else going on? Thought this month I would share some of the stupidest things I have ever heard people say, but before I share mine - let me ask you - have you ever said anything stupid? Ever had someone say something stupid to you?And exactly what makes some words stupid? Is it timing, insecurity, a lack of education, a need to try and look smarter than we are? Well, as the author of Idiots , I know I have often said some really stupid things, but I am sup- posed to be the expert here so I’ll keep them to myself . On a date last year with a lady friend, we shared a delightful evening over dinner and she suggested I come over the next day (Sunday) and we could cook a meal together. Well, when I got back to my hotel I got a text from her and she said (this is like 20 minutes later): Don’t bother, I’m still in love with Randy. Who the H____ is Randy, I thought? And why did she even bother getting together for dinner? . I once overheard a conversation at lunch between a father and his two kids. The son asked, “Dad, why do you keep taking us to lunch every Saturday when all you do is talk on your cell phone during lunch?” The father’s response: “Well I have a lot on my plate and to-do list.” Give me a break! . Several years ago, I was attending a staff meeting being conducted by the company president. You won’t believe what he said to the group: “Now folks, I understand that business is a bit slow, but the main reason is because none of you are equal to the task. You all need to pick up the pace and take responsibility for our slow period.” What the staff needs to do is FIRE the president. . While on the phone last week with a customer service representative trying to resolve an issue, here is what she said to me: “I’m sorry you have had this problem with us, but there is nothing I can do to fix it. Solving these types of issues is not part of my responsibility.” I’m serious. Then she just hung up! Well, my next call was to a different organization to replace my service from them. I’ll bet you have had this hap- pen on a few occasions. Well, folks I could go on for pages with this stuff, but if I do, I know sooner or later I will say something really stupid - so I’ll end with: Have a challenging day.
