Training through Associations, Revisited by Scott Cosby The focus of this month’s article is training in the drilling field. There are a variety of ways to provide quality training, but one of the best ways is through professional association. The Shallow Exploration Drillers Clinic (SEDC) is a group of which I have great familiarity. SEDC is an annual three-day meeting on drilling topics, networking, and exhibits open to drilling professionals, manufacturers, and others. Since 1965, it has occurred during the spring (March to May) months in one of the nine member states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The meeting fees are reasonable to all budgets, and continuing education credits are usually available for those who need them. State Departments of Transportation are usually the hosts for the meetings. The purpose of SEDC from its mission statement is “to present information that will assist all those engaged in exploration drilling in keeping abreast with new techniques and reviewing or perhaps even hearing for the first time old tried and true methods.” My personal familiarity with SEDC began with the first meeting I attended in 1998 in Oklahoma, and continued in later years in other states. In 2003 and 2009, I assisted in the development of those two successful meetings in Oklahoma; as I am this year. As a result of the 2009 meeting, I was voted on the SEDC Steering Committee. I have made numerous drilling-related contacts in manufacturing, academia, and other professionals. I’m presently working on the 2016 - 51st SEDC - which will take place April 19-21, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Catoosa, Oklahoma. Here’s the web site: http://sedc.unl.edu/clinic/2016clinic.asp Consult search engines for more information on this topic. Contact local and national associations for more information, as well. Get your drill operators and crews involved in the most up-to-date information on safety, technology, and techniques related to our industry.
