Like a Good Book by Ray Roerick Sales Manager, Well-Vu, Inc. When you pick up a good book, the first thing you find when you open the cover is the Introduction. It lays out the upcoming pages, gives you a mental image of the authors’ direction, and sets the stage for the next couple of hours of reading. So how does this relate to a down hole video camera? Simple. It’s the introduction to what you can expect of the well. It will lay out for both you and the homeowner what the condi- tion of the well casing is, if the screen is corroded or has per- forations; the integrity of the drive shoe if open hole, and possible sources of contamination. Plus, as you get experi- enced in observing the side of the casing on the way down, you will be able (in some cases) to see the drawdown line on the casing. It will show a pinhole from a lightning strike. (More on this in the next issue.) Many contractors have told me, before they had a camera, when they had a cus- tomer who used to have a good well and then the flow was re- duced or pumping some air with thewater, they had a lengthy challenge to explain why. Now, they simply video the well and, as ex- pected, the video shows the screen is coated with a combination of different mineral en- crustations. With the video, it’s a simple explanation of what caused it and what the recommended treatment is. It is then a whole lot easier to justify the unplanned expense to the homeowner. More importantly, after the treatment is completed and the well is flushed and ready to go back into service, another inspection is done to provide the homeowner/customer with both the before and after videos. You have to keep in mind, a well is our life and business, and we understand it in its entirety. To the homeowner, it’s a nuisance in the yard which needs to be mowed around. Every time someone shows up because there is a water problem, they end up putting hundreds if not thousands of dollars into that pipe in the ground they mow around. Or as I like to say after having a few bad experiences with doctors, “It’s just good WELLside manners.” Ray Ray Roerick may be contacted via e-mail to michele@ worldwidedrillingresource.com
