Water for Life International by Chris Hansen, Submitted by Tim Rasmussen Family and friends, we are in our third week here and beginning to feel the effects of summer in Guatemala. It's HOT and HUMID!! We are having days when the humidity exceeds the temperature. Everyone feels it. Guatemalans sweat and sigh just like us. It's oddly comforting to know this, but doesn't diminish the discomfort a bit. A few times, I've "accidentally" turned the hose on myself while doing dishes. Ah! Relief. So far, no snakes or scorpion sightings, but some spiders, quickly dispatched. Jon and I are pleasantly surprised at the social aspect of this trip. We actually have to plan and schedule time for the dif- ferent local families who want us to come to their homes for a meal and visit. What a gift from our Heavenly Father, to make friends 4000+ miles from home! Now, if I can just get this language thing down, we can actually have a substantive conversation and get past the basics. We have also made new friends from among the first-time volunteers this year. Some folks fit in com- fortably early on, and others are like an itchy sweater. They have good hearts and intentions, but have trouble assimilating both to Guatemalan culture and also living and relating to others in a very close setting. Today, we are back at the Dinsmore's, the missionary family we connected with last year. I'm having a great time playing with Silas and Jonah (6) and Eden (4), and catching up with Shelley and Jimmy. It's a joyful time. We sure could use continued prayer to include the well Jon drilled last year for the school. It seems there is a direct cor- relation here between rainfall and the water levels in the well. It sounds like an "oh duh", but at home, the water tables don't fluctuate dramatically as they do here. We are finding many of the wells, which start as good producers, fail sometime during the year after we leave. This is bad for the people who are counting (for the first time) on a dependable, clean source of water. So Jon and Dominic are working to rehab or deepen the well to produce a steady supply of good water. It doesn't have to be a lot, just a steady supply. On Friday, Dom leaves and Jon will be by himself. I hope and pray they will make substantial progress before then. Your continued prayerful support is very much appreciated, and we love you for it.
