57 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® MAY 2016 Harry W. Short (1935~2016) In Memoriam As reported last month, WWDR Contributing Writer Harry W. Short passed away peacefully on March 1, 2016, after a long health battle. He was a resident of Concord, California, for more than 40 years. Harry was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1958. He served two years in the U.S. Army, including one year stationed in Germany. His interests included Mother Earth and history, which led him to become an engineering geologist, avid photographer, writer, and genealogist. Harry is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 57 years Delores and their caring son Mark, who stood faithfully by his side. At the time of this writing, the Celebration of Life for our dear Harry was scheduled for April 30th at 2:00 PM at their church, Walnut Avenue United Methodist. In speaking with Delores as she was planning this celebration for Harry, she confided in me that as she was getting input from Mark when she mentioned “finger sandwiches” he said, “Dad wouldn’t like that. He liked desserts.” So Delores thought about it and said, “Then that’s what it will be, desserts!” Harry would surely smile at that, as well as this next part. She said they were discussing the music, and again Mark said, “Dad wouldn’t like that.” So she thought, and this is the music planned: Opening with Glenn Miller Music, followed by Battle Hymn of the Republic, Ring of Fire, I Walk The Line, America the Beautiful, This Land Is Your Land, and finally the ending...from Harry himself, Happy Trails to You ... The WWDR Team has lost a valuable contributing writer, his family a great husband and father, his friends a great friend. But we can always remember his smiling face and stories of his and Delores’, as well as some of the earlier years with Mark as a child on those many trips. Just ask Delores! We extend our sincerest sympathies to everyone who knew and came to love Harry, for this loss. George Hamilton Law (1930~2016) The Ontario Ground Water Association delivered the sad news George Hamilton Law passed away March 17, 2016. He was 85 years old. George Law was in his early 20s when he and five of his friends were working for a well drilling company and he decided to purchase a rig and start his own well drilling business. He moved to Calabogie and founded his business (George H. Law & Son Well Drilling) the next year. He was the beloved husband of Sheila and by first marriage, the late Kathleen; dear father of Alfy (late Doreen) and partner Marlean, Ann (David), Debbie (Allan), Bernie, Susan (Damon), Brandon, and Justin. Dear grandfather of Trish, Joey, Angie, Sarah, Derek, Catherine, Laura-Grace, Casey, Cayla, Nicki, and Christa; and great-grandfather of Ethan, Joseph, Caleb, Eric, and Ryeland. Predeceased by granddaughter Monica. The management and staff of WWDR extend their condolences to George’s family, friends, and former colleagues. Carl B. Thomas (1924~2016) Carl B. Thomas, 91, passed away March 29, 2016, after a sudden illness. He was a resident of both Spofford, New Hampshire; and Treasure Island, Florida. He was born on December 25, 1924, in Tupper Lake, New York, to George and Mary (Provost) Thomas. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in the Pacific for four years during World War II. On November 16, 1947, he married Betty L. Burowski. Carl worked as a blasting foreman for Hemlock Construction for 20 years. Then in 1971, with the support and help of his wife, he started his own drilling and blasting company, Carl B. Thomas Construction Corp. and subsequently D & L Thomas Equipment Corp., Thomas Instruments, and North American Track of Charleston SC. A kind, generous, and well-respected businessman, Carl was known all over New England for his expertise in the blasting industry. He was also a longtime member of the International Society of Explosives Engineers and the New England Chapter of the Society of Explosive Engineers. He enjoyed walking the flea markets and was a collector of many things. While in Florida, he enjoyed fishing on his boat; in Spofford, his garden. Carl is survived by sons David and wife Linda, Chris and wife Donna; daughter Lynn and fiancé Stephen; sisters Emaline and Betty; brothers Kenneth and Byron; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years Betty, and son Jeffrey. The WWDR Team expresses their heartfelt sympathy to Carl’s family and friends. Lest we forget...
