35 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® NOVEMBER 2016 Flow Sleeve by Bill Corey Pentair Water Training Institute The last two months we talked about how important it is to make sure your motor only starts once every 15 min- utes, one horsepower or larger. You may remember I t o l d my cus t omer he could just turn the pump on and let it run. As long as they are cooled properly, running is not as hard as starting, across the l ine. What is the proper way to cool the motor? The image at left is a flow inducer sleeve we made, and sometimes show at our factory schools. It is not the best, but it will work. A better way was introduced to me by a company which makes screens to keep big stuff out of the pump. The owner, Chuck, suggested putting a well cap just above the pump and running the sleeve to the bottom of the motor, and then place three centering bolts to keep the sleeve from bouncing back and forth or maybe even getting stuck to one side and preventing the flow from getting through. Now remember what the purpose of the sleeve is - to force the water past the motor and carry the heat away. This means the sleeve needs to be bigger than the motor, but not too big. The chart shows the amount of water required to have the correct amount of velocity to carry the heat away. So this brings up another point, the sleeve must be solid. I can think back when someone would call in and say, “I made sure I could get water to move past the motor. I drilled holes in the sleeve.” Great, you just made sure you couldn’t get the velocity of water past the motor. It’s not the quantity of water, but the velocity of the water moving past the motor that cools it. When you come to my factory school, I give you a test within 20 minutes of starting the school. Question 14 asks: What cools a Submersible Pump Motor? The answer I see the most is “Water”, which I check as incorrect. When asked why it was wrong, I tell them it’s not the water, but the movement of the water that cools the motor. The point is, if you are going to use a sleeve, make sure it is not too big or too small, and the only hole is in the bot- tom. Okay, you may need one more hole. I call it a priming hole and it needs to be small, about 1/8-inch and it should be drilled and inch or so from the top. It allows the air to escape as you sub- merge the unit.
