Possible National Geothermal Lab Site Compiled by Editorial Staff of Worl e i in R ource dWid Dr ll g es ® The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is looking at Oregon’s Deschutes County as a possible home for a national geothermal research lab. The tract of land under scrutiny is leased by Seattle- based AltaRock Energy Inc., and in close proximity to the Newberry Volcano. AltaRock has performed enhanced geo- thermal testing there, and David Stowe, a spokesman for the company, has ex- pressed confidence in the site’s eventual future as the location for the proposed Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy. Despite the compe- tition from Idaho, Nevada, California, and Utah, being “stiff”, as Stowe puts it, Oregon’s contender is the only potential site on the side of an active volcano. As well as serving as a research site for scientists and engineers to explore new technologies for harnessing geo- thermal energy, the facility would bring temporary construction jobs, academic opportunities, and an economic boost to local communities. The Newberry site is one of five potential sites awarded $2 million by the Geothermal Technologies Office within DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, which is being used to perform a detailed analysis of its suitability as a geothermal observatory, and to design scientific, management, environmental, safety, and public outreach plans for how the obser- vatory would operate. Only three prom- ising lab sites will advance to the next round of scouting, splitting about $30 million in DOE funding for planning and permitting before the final spot is cho- sen.
