The sys- tem s w de open to any and every nefar - ous hacker who comes a ong. Th ngs ke computer v ruses can shut down everyth ng, or at the very east make your fe m serab e. Spyware can copy nformat on ke soc a secur ty numbers from your computer and send t to dent ty th eves. Ransomware can d sab e a , or parts of your computer unt you pay a ransom to f x the prob em they caused. USA Today reported recent y that hackers succeeded n tak ng contro of a Jeep Cherokee by us ng ts own network ng system to a ter ts nterna contro systems. The software maker cou d be the source of any or a of the above, and f you re ocked nto one system supp er there s not much you can do about t. It s specu ated th s often goes unreported or underreported as the v ct ms are re uctant to d sc ose th s, because adm tt ng t happened cou d be v ewed as manager a ncompetence. There s software ava ab e to e m nate these prob ems, but t must be wr tten to address the spec f c software “bug”, and the “bugs” change constant y. S m ar y, one wonders about the smartphone “updates” we are confronted w th regu ar y. I just had a mandatory ce phone update that, I was to d, d sab ed parts of the phone because of a f aw n the new software. Quest on: If the o d software works correct y, why rep ace (update) t? Computer techno ogy has advanced to the po nt where very sma , nexpens ve computers can perform some fa r y soph st cated operat ons.
