Long-Lost Ancient Greek Island Found Compiled by Editorial Staff of WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Atlantis wasn’t the only Greek island to get lost in ancient history. According to records from long ago, three Arginusae islands once existed off Turkey’s coast. Only two islands are there in modern times, leading to a mystery archaeologists were previously unable to solve. Arginusae was located between the famous Greek city-states of Athens and Sparta, and was near the site of the epic naval Battle of Arginusae which took place during the Peloponnesian War in 406 BCE. The island mysteriously disappeared in centuries following the war. Modern researchers came up with an interesting theory; maybe the island still existed, just not as an island anymore. They de- cided to take a closer look at a penin- sula near the two existing islands, known as the Garip islands in modern times. Could the peninsula have been the third Arginusae island? Researchers led by the German Archaeological Institute drilled into the peninsula to obtain core samples and examine underground rock layers. They determined the region was one of the three islands over two centuries ago. Fel ix Pi rson f rom the German Archaeological Institute told the Turkish newspaper, Zaman : “It was not clear that these lands were actually the Arginusae islands that we were looking for until our research. By examining the geological samples obtained through the core-drill method, we recognized that the gap be- tween the third Arginusae Island and the mainland was indeed filled with loose soil and rock, creating the existing peninsula.” This is a crucial discovery for his- torians and archaeologists, since the Peloponnesian War was one of the most significant events in the history of an- cient Greece and mankind.
