The “idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” The Good Ol’ Days When I think about the good ol’ days, I remember a conver- sation I had years ago with a nine-year-old kid. He said, “I wish we could go back to the good old days.” So I asked him, “What were the good ol’ days?” His response, “Well, when I didn’t have homework, didn’t have to get up every morning at 6 a.m., and could eat what and when I wanted.” Wow, words of wisdom? So, let me ask you - what are your good ol’ days? Fax machines? No cell phones? No waiting in traffic jams? Gas that was 25¢ a gallon? Snickers bars that were 5¢? Should I go back even further? How about a few years for- ward! Computers which didn’t tell me what to do. Devices that didn’t tell me how to drive. Politicians who didn’t tell me how to live. So, what really are the good ol’ days for you? Yesterday? Last year? Ten years ago? Fifty years ago? First, it depends on how old you are, then it can get a bit complicated with things like regrets, expectations, dreams, failures, mistakes, achievements, memories, etc. In the end, the good ol’ days are nothing but good or bad memories; and these, my friends, can vary depending on whether you are an idiot or have a certain degree of wisdom. Here are a few examples: 0 Did you know there actually is a magazine called Good Old Days ? (6 issues for 20 bucks) (http://magazine-subscription.com- sub.info/Good-Old-Days/Welcome) 0 The Good Old Days: They Were Terrible! - This book explains why the "good old days" were only good for a privileged few, and why they were unrelentingly hard for most. Sobering. 0 Good ol’ days is a cliché in popular culture. It refers to an era considered by the speaker to be better than the current era. It is a form of nostalgic romanticizing. 0 “The good old days are now.” - Tom Clancy. As I sit here writing this, I am filled with both tears and laughter about what was and what wasn’t in my good ol’ days. How about you? Want to go back to your good ol’ days, or can’t wait for your new days coming around the corner (which will one day be your good ol’ days!)?
