63 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® DECEMBER 2017 MacGyver’s Way . . . Do you have a better way? This month is sponsored by Shakti Pumps USA LLC Have you ever seen an employee using a 2-cycle piece of equipment, and it just stopped running, and now it's hard to pull, or won't pull at all? Well, sure enough it happened to us. An employee said he put 2-cycle oil in the gas (we run 32:1 mix), heavy oil so we don't melt a piston. Here is how it went: He fills the saw up with gas and takes off cutting trees. Just a few minutes into the project, the saw comes to a stop. He walks up and says it just stopped running. So I asked, "You did put the correct oil in the gas, right? He said, "Oil?" I know right off the bat what happened. See, the oil in the gas keeps the system lubricated while running. That is why there is no crankcase. I proceeded to fix the gas can first and add the correct amount of oil to the gas. Then I took the saw apart; removing the cylinder from the block, being careful to make sure I did not break a piston ring. Once the two were apart, I looked at the piston to see if it had very deep melted marks (grooves) on it and looked at the rings to make sure they weren’t damaged. A small piece of 220 or finer sandpaper was used to sand the piston to remove the melted burrs on it. NOTE: If you have to remove the rings, be careful not to break them, and also remember the direction and sequence they where removed. Once the piston is sanded, move to the cylinder and sand it (a sanding drum works best - just don't over sand). Try the piston in and out to see if it passes freely. Replace the rings. Slowly and carefully put the piston back into the cylinder making sure it is on the right direction (flywheel and magneto match up). Try to spin the flywheel over to see if it spins freely, but still makes compression. Then replace all guards and fill with gas/oil mixuture to see if it cranks. This is not a permanent fix, but just saying, I have a blower I did this to and 15 years later it still runs great.
