The boom of aquaculture in the Ararat Basin saw about 260 fish farms in operation. Since this peak, several fish farms have been abandoned, leaving behind wells which still discharge groundwater. Proper sealing of these abandoned wells could significantly reduce the waste of some of the area’s pre- cious groundwater supply. Modeling the Basin could help determine which of these abandoned wells are able to be sealed using limited resources while also benefitting the Basin. “We know of more than 30 communities that had flowing wells to supply their drinking water, and now those wells no longer flow,” said Patrick Meyer, a science and technology advisor with USAID Armenia. “Overextraction of groundwa- ter has widespread consequences beyond just the water sector. For example, in recent years, the Armenian nuclear power plant has had to build new systems to ensure adequate water supply for cooling.” With some wells being sealed completely, and others pulling up low-quality water due to their depths, this endeavor to map water level and water quality trends could pos- sibly result in the drilling of new, more productive wells within the basin.
