Homeowner Tips for Flooded Water Wells Adapted from a News Release by the National Ground Water Association Your customers count on you to make sure their wells are providing clean potable water. Make sure they also know what to do when their water well is threat- ened by flooding. According to the National Ground Water Association (NGWA), if a well has been flooded, homeowners should follow these guidelines: • Do not drink the water or wash with it, but use an alternative supply such as bottled water. • Stay away from the well pump while it’s flooded to avoid electrical shock. • Check with the local emergency manage- ment agency about any guidance relating to local conditions or specific contamination threats due to area flooding. Remind customers of the importance of hiring a qualified water well contractor or pump installer to: o Clean and turn on the pump. o Flush the well. o Disinfect the well. o Perform any other necessary maintenance. Bacterial contamination is to be expected in a flooded well, so disinfection of the well system after it has been pumped out and cleaned will also be necessary, according to Cliff Treyens, NGWA director of general public outreach.
