heater (the heating fabric) so he would be comfortable in the winter, but we also needed to be able to “sense” when the cat is in the bed and when he isn’t so we will not run the h eater unnecessarily when he isn’t in bed to enjoy the warmth. One way to do this would be to use the “stretchy” fabric across his bed, so when he got into his bed the resistance would change on the fabric to tell the microprocessor he was in the bed. We could use this signal to turn on the heater fabric and have at least one temperature sensor nearby to control the heat output, so we can make the bed just the right temperature. While this “cat heater” project may appear to be a whimsical exercise, this process is the basis for all computer controls. First you identify the materials you have to work with and their properties. Then you decide on the desired outcome. What is this control unit supposed to do or not do? Then you assemble the components (hardware), program the microprocessor (soft- ware), and test it extensively.
