Let’s be Accurate by Bill Corey In the April WWDR magazine, I had a regular reader take a few odds with me on the accuracy and total honesty of my article. I had mentioned jet pumps came into existence in the early 1930s. Part of his objection was windmills and hand pumps were around before then. This is true, but they are not cen- trifugal pumps, they are positive displacement pumps. Even as such, they still only have a maximum depth of 34 inches - not really, but more than a jet pump. Remember, we only have the weight of the at mosphere pushing up on the water to get it to us. If you move the positive displacement pump below the water surface, it pushes the water up and you can therefore get water from a deeper depth. Engineers are the ones who figured all this out, and while I like to make fun of them, I wouldn’t know what I would do without them. A friend of mine has a Ph.D. in this field and fancies himself a good trainer. I certainly would never say he is not, because he has a lot of knowledge - more than I do. Yet one time when he asked me to train some of his installers, he said this after I was finished: “I’ll admit you are a better trainer than I am, but I’m still smarter than you!” And he is correct, but getting the information across is very important in helping installers understand why they do what it is they do. I look at it this way: If I can help you understand in what is called “layman’s terms”, then I have accomplished what needs to be done. I am not always 100% accurate, but if you understand why you need to do something, then I have done my job.
