Nowadays, most companies who sell computer products do not make these products . They are simply resellers or marketers of said product. Most of the time, someone develops a product, then this product, along with the information required to produce it, is sold to or otherwise acquired by the reseller. The reseller sends all of the manufacturing information to an assembly company who keeps this information on file. The reseller then places an order for X number of units at a certain price to be delivered by a certain date, and the assembly company does all of the work. Much of this assembly work is done in Asia because of the lower costs. This is why, in most cases, those who developed the product someone is trying to deal with have either moved on or are out of the picture entirely. The reseller does not have anyone who has full knowledge of the product on-site and he/she was probably never there to begin with. It is largely why computer products have become “throw- away” products, because even if these products could be fixed, they won’t be fixed. Back to my client who asked me to fix his computer control system . . . he didn’t want to throw good money after bad because of the huge initial cost of the system. But if it isn’t working for him, and is costing him time and money in lost productivity, maybe he shouldn’t have the product to begin with.
