Rookie Goes to Minnesota by Betsy Willett, Public Relations Professional WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Being delayed by weather didn’t dampen our moods as Ronnie and I headed to Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, to attend the Minnesota Water Well Association (MWWA) convention and trade show. Once we arrived at the hotel, we met with the MWWA Board to take a few pictures and then caught up with everyone else in the hospitality rooms for supper, drinks, and a little football. The next morning started out early with the ladies enjoying themselves at an Art & Elixir, aka “Sip and Paint”, while the rest of us attended continuing education classes on downhole technology, geol- ogy, and safety. Ray Roerick’s class was very informative with him showing videos where cam- eras have been lowered into wells. Some things seem more interesting when put on a screen or out of the box - because I would never have thought a tape measure would be dropped down a well. In my mind, I was asking myself, “Were they meas- uring how deep the well was?” Next up was Rob Caho, his class was on safety. Do you know who is responsi- ble for safety on your drilling site? Is your company proactive or reactive when it comes to safety on the job? These were just a couple of the questions asked during the safety class on Monday, and all of them were extremely important. Some of the safety issues he pointed out which are often overlooked like, when was the last time you checked the date on your hard hat? Is it more than five years old?Michael Schnieders was also there and gave a lecture on “Defining the Operational Age of a Wel l : Predict ing Maintenance Issues in Advance of Failure”. At lunch we had the opportunity to speak with our friends from Well-Vu and Shakti, and made a new friend Christa from DHIA. The trade show was extremely active, people were everywhere, and many were gathering to play the old-school video game Big Buck Hunter: Shooter’s Challenge . I also had the opportunity to speak with a few of the vendors, like Nicholas about their most popular product the Pentek Intellidrive XL. The banquet was filled with lots of laughs and conversation with many people in attendance. It did get a little emotional as Katherine “Katie” Schilling accepted her scholarship from MWWA for college. Her plans are to attend the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to study civil engineering. Everyone could see how honored and appreciative Katie was for this scholarship award. During the auction to raise money for the Dave Williams Foundation there were several bidding wars. The most popular one was the Green Bay Packers gear and paraphernalia. The drilling rig, a traveling tro- phy that has been an auction favorite for many attendees, will be retiring after this year. Thanks to Palmer Bit who do- nated a new traveling trophy, a bit lamp. Casino night was full of more laughs, fun, and a new learning experience for a few people. Thank you Kevin for teach- ing me how to play Blackjack . It was all in good fun and a great way for the vendors and attendees to talk and catch up on the latest. The show ended with classes from the Department of Transportation and the Department of Health. Next stop Texas . . . Ladies Sip & Paint at MWWA. WWDR Photos.
