Explosives Safety and Security Tips Adapted from Information by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives In the United States, federal explosives laws and regulations provide requirements and standards regarding the securing and safety of explosives. Here are some suggestions, developed in partnership with the International Makers of Explosives (IME) and the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE). Secure Your Keys ? When it comes to the keys for storage magazines and trucks loaded with explosives, try to limit access to essential personnel only. ? Keys should be stored in a secure, unmarked area, and not in a central location on the premises if at all possible. ? Using a logbook to track when employees receive and return the keys can enhance security and help track missing keys. ? Consider numbering or marking keys and assigning them to specific individuals. ? If you do not share keys, conduct regular inventories to ensure you can account for all keys. ? If you cannot account for a set of keys, change the magazine locks. This will help ensure only current employees have access to your magazines. ? Make sure employees know they cannot duplicate keys without authorization and consider making it company policy. Secure Your Magazines Licensees and permittees are required to keep magazines in secure locations and inspect them visually every seven days. Consider inspecting readily accessible magazines daily to ensure there has been no unauthorized or attempted unauthorized entry to the magazine. This will also allow you to assess and correct any security or safety vulnerabilities. G Even if your explosives magazines meet the table of distances requirements, consider reassessing your magazine lo- cations to ensure they are in the most secure locations. G Conduct regular inventories more than once per year to ensure there have been no thefts/losses of explosive materials. G Have all applicable federal, state, and local agency telephone numbers readily available to report a theft, loss, or sus- picious activity. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Mine Safety and Health Administration, and state agencies may have additional rules and regulations, so make sure you contact them directly for information on their requirements.
