13 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® FEBRUARY 2018 Are You Ready for the Electronic Logging Device Mandate? The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) congressionally mandated ELD (electronic logging device) compliance deadline went into effect December 18, 2017. As of that date, all commercial drivers were required to install an ELD if they are also required to prepare hours-of-service records of duty status (RODS). Inspectors and roadside enforcement personnel have begun documenting violations on road- side inspection reports and, at the jurisdiction’s discretion, will issue citations to com- mercial motor vehicle drivers operating vehicles without a compliant ELD. Beginning April 1, 2018, inspectors will start placing commercial motor vehicle drivers out of service if their vehicle is not equipped with a required device.
