In Memoriam Andrew Lyon With deepest sorrow, the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association informed of the passing of dear friend, board member, and past member of the Drilling Excellence Certification Committee Andrew Lyon, on December 5, 2017. Sadly, he lost his fight with cancer at the age of 58. Andrew started as a Cadet Mine Surveyor at the Rosebery Underground Zinc Mine on the West Coast of Tasmania, in February 1978. After graduating from the West School of Mines with a diploma of mine surveying in 1982, he was hired for the position of section surveyor at Central Norseman Gold Mines in Western Australia. In 1984, Andrew moved to Elura Lead Zinc Mine at Cobar, in central New South Wales, where his roles expanded to include raiseboring, directional drilling, backfill, and mine services. Looking for an opportunity to move more into management, in 1993, Andrew took the role of operations manager for an exploration drilling company, which further broadened his knowledge and experience in drilling. Wanting to return to mining, Andrew accepted a position with Atlas Copco as regional manager for their Rocktools Division, based in Townsville, Queensland, in 1995. Several moves within Atlas Copco found Andrew based in Bangkok, managing ten countries and six customer centers with over 350 employees in 2006. As of 2012, Andrew was general manager of Atlas Copco Canada, Inc. He will be remembered for his positive outlook on life, compassion for others, and his big welcoming smile. Helena Hedblom, president of the mining and rock excavation techniques business area of Atlas Copco said, “Andrew’s death is a big loss for our organization. We will miss a positive, energetic, and result-driven colleague and friend. Our thoughts are with his wife Sue and family . . .” William Goeckel “Bill” Mulligan (1937~2017) The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) sadly relayed the passing of William Goeckel “Bill” Mulligan on December 19, 2017. Born in 1930, in Kingston, Pennsylvania, Bill graduated high school in 1948, then went on to earn a BS in mining engineering from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He immediately began a 43-year career with Ingersoll-Rand Company, reaching the office of executive vice president. He was a longtime AEM participant, serving on the Board of Directors, becoming an AEM Life Honorary Director, and being inducted into the AEM Hall of Fame in 1994. Bill was considered a driving force for infrastructure invest- ment. After retiring in 1995, he continued his “second career” in harness racing. The culmination of his racing interests came with the award for 2016 Pennsylvania Breeder of the Year by the Harness Writers Association. Bi l l is survived by his wife of 36 years, Eileen; brothers Gene and Bob; sisters Mary Lou and Joan, and numer- ous nieces and nephews. The management and staff of WWDR extend their condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of these industry leaders. Lest we forget... Thanks again for your “Solid Gold Service”.
