WorldWide Drilling Resource
49 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® FEBRUARY 2018 Ronnie’s Real World Every once in a while, someone comes along who has a very good - no great - story to tell you. I had just that experience during Groundwater Week 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Martin Hammond, past president of the National Ground Water Association, Newfoundland and Labrador Ground Water Association, Lions Club, and a host of other associations he was a prominent member of, came up to WorldWide ’s booth. (See photograph right.) He began telling me about someone very important to him - his grandson Justin Hammond (upper right photograph), who had diligently prepared an article entitled Future & Current Landscape of Water Well Drilling , which he had presented in person before many people in the industry and received great accolades for being “spot on”. I was so impressed, and as he asked me if I thought it would be something worth printing, I did not hesitate. He sent it to me and I am stepping outside the box for the next few segments of Ronnie’s Real World , to bring it to you in person. I hope you enjoy it as much I have. Future & Current Landscape of Water Well Drilling Justin Hammond, Martin B. Hammond Co. Ltd. My name is Justin Hammond, I’m a 27-year old, 4th generation, water well driller from Newfoundland, Canada. I work with my family water well drilling business, Martin B. Hammond Co. Ltd., which is based out of South River, Newfoundland. Martin is my grandfather and has operated his own water well drilling business since 1973, with a cable tool rig, the rest is history. Today, the company offers water well drilling and geothermal drilling. We currently have three Reichdrill 690s - years 1989, 2005, and 2013. We also offer [hydro- facturing], pump installation and service, as well as a boom truck service. Martin’s business has grown into a full service well drilling contractor. Martin always focused on core principles that carried his business to success - Principles that focused on maintaining equip- ment and tools, proper training of staff, doing every job right, and customer satisfaction. As a business owner in the water well industry, Martin has had to act as a mechanic, an expert on hydraulics, an engineer, a welder, a drill rig operator, a truck driver, a plumber, an electrician, a customer relations specialist, a manager of logistics, a manager of employees, and a capital allocation manager. I’m sure there’s still some roles I’ve missed. Martin, who had a trade in welding before his water well drilling journey, had to learn much of this on the fly. Through determination, a will to work, and keen thinking, he prevailed. When nobody else could find a way, Martin worked until he found a way. That was what you had to do to succeed. Before we talked about the future, [I felt] it was important to discuss the past. To be continued next month . . . This truly is, Ronnie’s Real World . . .
