Frequently-Used Geological Terms Part 68 Glossary Adapted from the Dictionary of Geological Terms P Polyhalite - An evaporite mineral. It is commonly in pink, red, or gray masses in halite or potassium salt deposits. Polymineralic - Term used to describe a rock composed of two or more minerals, such as an igneous rock consisting of more than one essen- tial mineral. Polyphyletic - Evolving from more than one ancestral stock. Pool - A subsurface accumulation of oil or gas in porous and permeable rock. Also refers to a body of impounded water, artificially confined above a dam or the closed gates of a lock. Poorly Graded - A geologic term for Poorly Sorted . Poorly Sorted - Said of a clastic sediment or rock which consists of particles of many sizes mixed together in an unsystematic manner so no one size class dom- inates. Porcelaneous Chert - A hard, opaque chert having a smooth fracture surface and a typically china white appearance resembling chinaware or glazed porcelain. Porcellanite - A dense siliceous rock having the tex- ture, dull luster, and general appearance of unglazed porcelain. It is less hard, dense, and vitreous than chert. The term has also been used to describe impure chert, backed clay, or shale in the roof or floor of a burned- out coal seam, and for a fine-grained acidic tuff com- pacted by secondary silica.
