Todd Tannehill A WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Exclusive After nearly a quarter century of experience in the drilling industry, Todd Tannehill decided to open his own company with his wife Dee in North Lima, Ohio - Mud & More, LLC. Todd began his drilling career as a sales person for a water well distributor in New England after he was discharged from the U.S. Navy. “I knew from day one I had found my career field,” he stated. While finishing up college, he worked as a customer service manager for a tank man- ufacturer. Ultimately, he ended up working for a minerals company and was vice president of the global drilling fluids group, before venturing out on his own. Mud & More, LLC is a veteran-owned business serving the HDD (horizontal directional drilling) and foundation markets. The company is also a manufacturer’s representative for product lines sold to the water well, geothermal, sump, and sewage industries. Making the move from a large corporation to owning your own business takes some adjusting. When working for a large company, there are departments to take care of accounting, marketing, and other nonsales-related activities necessary to keep a company running smoothly. According to Todd, “The biggest adjustment from a corporate position to owning my own business has been the increased importance of time management. I quickly learned that as a small business owner, I wear all the hats - like many of our customers do. I joke with my partner in the business, who is also my wife Dee, that this business is like a fourth child, and if we can make it through teenagers, then we'll make it through start-up!” Todd and Dee enjoy the simplicity of running a small company. They’ve implemented several programs for the HDD and foundation side of their business, such as a loyalty program and mud club to foster a strong relationship with contractors. “Our goal is to help our customers keep more of the profits on every job,” he stated. “ We formed Mud & More, LLC with a focus on treating customers the way we want to be treated. From the beginning, our company has taken a proactive approach by drawing on customer feedback and al igning with our industry advisory board. We have developed a strategic plan that is a working document and frequently revised to keep the compa- ny at the forefront of customers’ and industry trends.” Todd has a great eye for the future of the drilling industry, “I would like to see some of the nonoil and gas drilling associations channel their energy and resources together and present a stronger voice for the drilling industry in general. Focusing these resources could give the dri l l ing industry a stronger position in Washington, and allow a better product to be delivered. Some industry segments have had less than favorable press. With a united front, contractors, distributors, manufacturers, supporting companies, and associations would all win, and the industry would ultimately become stronger,” he added.
