WorldWide Drilling Resource

47 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® JANUARY 2018 Pennsylvania Drilling & Blasting by Ed Moranski Chief Marketing Officer WorldWide Drilling Resource ® I had the pleasure of attending the 18th Pennsylvania Drilling and Blasting Conference, November 16-17, 2017, at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in State College, Pennsylvania. This expo just gets better and better each year. Along with the many attendees catching up with old friends and swapping stories, the conference provided continuing education requirements for blaster’s license renewal. The general sessions were interesting, giving insight and updated information on vital topics, such as vibration control and improved fragmentation. A variety of indoor exhibitors (I believe spaces were sold out) displayed their latest and greatest products. Several manufacturers had drill rigs parked outdoors and representatives were available to answer questions. The Pennsylvania Chapter of the ISEE (International Society of Explosives Engineers) is just one of the many chapters throughout North America, and there are also several chapters in other parts of the world. I met folks from Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, so the Northeast was well represented. It was great to see associates and hear industry news. The Penn Stater Hotel has nice rooms, and the ambiance of the restaurant and lounge are places to relax and grab some great food. Since the event is every other year, if you missed the conference this year, make a note to attend the next one November 14-15, 2019. Patterson-UTI Energy, Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire Multi-Shot, LLC (MS Energy Services), a leading directional drilling services company in Conroe, Texas. With operations in most of the major producing onshore gas and oil basins in the U.S., MS Energy has become a leading provider of directional drilling services in the country. The company provides a comprehensive suite of services including directional drilling, downhole performance motors, and directional surveying, as well as measurement while drilling (MWD), and wireline steering tools. Mark S. Siegel, chairman of Patterson-UTI said, "The acquisition of MS Energy will broaden our service offerings and strengthen our position as a leading provider of oilfield services in the United States. Additionally, this transaction increases our exposure to North American unconventional drilling activity. With the increasing proportion of pad drilling and the growing number of horizontal wells per pad, directional drilling is seeing an increase in demand, even in the vertical section of the wells, as the well placement is increas- ingly important to avoid interfering with other nearby wells." MS Energy has proprietary mud motor, MWD, and survey equipment which is designed, engineered, and manufactured in-house. The company’s internally-devel- oped and patented Clean Communications technology also enables high-speed electromagnetic MWD telemetry independent of geological formation constraints in pad drilling, which saves considerable drilling time and expenses. Allen R. Neel, chairman and CEO of MS Energy said, "We look forward to com- bining our industry leading directional services and technology with Patterson-UTI's state of the art drilling rig technology . . ." Mr. Neel will be joining Patterson-UTI as president of MS Energy. He served as CEO of MS Energy since 2004, when he, along with MS Energy COO Paul Culbreth, cofounded the company which purchased MS Energy from previous owners. Paul Culbreth will also be joining Patterson-UTI. Photo courtesy of MS Energy.
