In Memoriam Gordon Winifred Caster (1934~2018) Gordon Winifred Caster of Jamestown, New York, passed away May 1, 2018. He was 83 years old. Born in Oswego, New York, Gordon graduated from Emmanuel Missionary College Academy in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He then met his wife Severne while serving as a White Coat in the U.S. Army at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. Jamestown, New York, became their home in 1966. Gordon continued the family business, Caster Well Drilling, becoming the third generation to operate the company. In the 1980s, they expanded into natural gas and oil in western New York and Pennsylvania, then into large-diameter wells in Saudi Arabia. Later, the company expanded again, this time into Canada, drilling for geothermal heating and cooling systems. Eventually, they helped develop this green form of heating throughout western New York and Pennsylvania. Although Gordon had turned the business over to his sons Pernell and Trent, he remained active in the company, helping out where needed. Gordon enjoyed growing fruits and vegetables, and keeping his large yard manicured. He also like boating, water skiing, snow skiing, snowmobiling, scuba diving, and camping. He had a talent for fabricating steel into useful tools and equipment, making many items for use in the business. He was preceded in death by his wife Severne. Gordon is survived by his daughter Coleen; sons Pernell (Cathy) and Trent (Susan); and grandchildren Jonas, Grady, and Isabella. James L. Giffin (1939~2018) James L. Giffin of Osage, Wyoming, passed away April 11, 2018, after a battle with cancer. He was 78 years old. Born in 1939, James was the youngest of six children. He grew up on the family homestead where his father taught him to use a spudder rig to drill water wells. After earning his associate degree in Denver, he enlisted in the National Guard. A Valentine’s Day blind date with Marilyn turned into marriage in 1961. James worked as an accountant in Denver before returning to the family business, Giffin Drilling Co., to drill, service, and repair water wells in Osage. He helped organize and build the Osage dump site and was a member of several lodges during his life- time. He coached little league baseball and followed his children and grandchildren on their teams, keeping his own meticulous stats as they played. He also liked fishing, hunting, gardening, and sharing stories of his adventures. James is survived by his wife of 56 years Marilyn; children Dave (Cheryl), Phillip (Cris), and Susan (Ray); and grandchildren Catrina (Will), Dan (Kaeleigh), Barbara, Brandon (Amber), David (Lindsey), Jessica, Jon, James (Karen), Aaron; and seven great-grandchildren. The management and staff of WWDR extend their condolences to the family and friends of these industry veterans. Lest we forget...
