Change Comes When You Work Together by Bonnie Love, Editor, WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Better Together was the theme for this year’s International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) Conference and Expo in sunny Orlando, Florida. The message was clear; the only way for the industry to succeed is for everyone from lobbyists, engineers, architects, and designers, to manufacturers, laborers, and drilling professionals, to work together. The keynote speaker, Mr. Steve Nygren said he didn’t know much about the geothermal process when developing his sustainable community, Serenbe. There were several options such as solar and wind, but his reason for choosing geothermal systems for the community’s heating and cooling needs was quite surprising. He didn’t want a bunch of loud compressors cluttering up the open green space he had carefully planned. Perhaps that is an overlooked or underappreciated selling point? It was a unique point of view and everyone seemed to enjoy his presentation. Trey Austin, CEO and president of Geo-Energy Services, announced the cre- ation of the Dr. Jim Bose Lifetime Achievement Award and although the inaugural recipient, Dr. Bose was unable to make the meeting, we were all treated to a video of him explaining the early years of the industry. Continuing in his footsteps, this award will be presented to those with the vision, commitment, leadership, and dedication to help the industry grow. There was so much to learn and the seminars covered a variety of topics such as geothermal sales, converting architects to geothermal, remediation design success, how to achieve state and local tax credits and grants, as well as a general contractor panel. The leadership panel brought industry leaders face to face with those using their products in the field. It was enlightening to hear how these companies are working together to promote the use and development of geothermal systems. On the trade show floor, attendees were able to learn about new products and technology for getting the job done.
