Oil/Water Exploration by Harold White Ain’t it funny what people say? “Water. What happens if we keep on using it? Are we going to run out? Do we have enough? Someday, there will not be anymore water.” The most ridiculous statement I have heard is: “We are draining our reserve.” Like there is a big lake underground somewhere. I don’t think there is such a place, and I do not think any form of science can prove it to me. I think it’s fake news used to persuade people to vote on water control - a costly procedure for the public - control of the use of water from their own lands. Back to my point, water is not something you can get rid of. Water is here to stay, no matter how much we use it. We can irrigate the whole world; deserts can be turned into farmland; everything can be watered. Just to give you an idea about how much water is available, the Amazon River runs enough water into the ocean every 30 seconds to give all the people in the world their day’s supply of drinking water - every day, forever. This doesn’t sound like a water shortage to me. There are lots of rivers - large and small, above and below, all over the world - running freshwater into the ocean. No matter what water is used for or has been used for, it always returns to the ocean, so there is as much water in the world as there ever was - oceans of it. The magic is in the rain cycle - the renewal or purification. So what is the big scare? It is not about the water, we understand that. The farmers having to pay for the water they pump out of their own wells, on their own property, and having to pay for a permit to drill on their own property. The governing of how many, or if, a farmer can drill, and to purchase a permit for each well. How do the people have the idea they can vote on what a property owner can and cannot do on or with their own property - what you can plant and what you have to raise? I have heard all of the above and more, like the American people are so stupid they might as well walk in and give up all of their property rights. They have been voting them away for years anyway. Compiled by Caleb Whitaker, Associate Editor, WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Koalas aren’t usually the most active animals, but they are good climbers. One koala in Adelaide, Australia, sought refuge in a surprising place after it was chased off a busy road to keep it from being hit by passing cars. Where does a koala retreat to after escaping traffic? This one scaled a drilling rig on a construction site, perched itself on top, and was resolved not to come down without a helping hand. To get where it did on the rig, the determined koala had to climb an estimated 90 feet. In a rescue attempt, the SouthAustralian Metropolitan Fire Service used a crane to reach the koala. At first, the perched marsupial was a bit reluctant to budge, but eventually rescuers did manage to convince it drill rigs were not intended to be used by koalas as jungle gyms, and it would be safer elsewhere. Firefighters took about an hour to retrieve the unfazed animal, cover it using a special bag, and carry it down to safety. The koala was loaded into the back of a car, taken for a check-up, and later re- leased back into the wild without any harm from its venture into the drilling business. This wasn’t the first time the koala had found itself in an interesting situation after climbing something. A yellow tag on its ear enabledpeople to identify it as thesamekoala which was rescued at Flinders University. After it was helped to safety on Flinders’ campus, the koala was recognized for its academic pursuits by receiving the name “Uni Girl”. The construction site where she was found this time is close to the park where she was previously released into the wild. With her adorable tendency to wreak havoc by climbing various tall objects, it must be asked - what will Uni Girl try to climb next? C&G 42 JULY 2018
