Intelligent Sensor Part of a Greater Solution Weir Oil & Gas, upstream provider of pressure pumping and control equip- ment and services, announced achieve- ment of significant success in the field with intelligent sensors designed to ac- curately communicate mud gas liquid levels in real time to prevent overflows and maximize safety, while reducing cleanup costs and lowering downtime. Weir’s Intelligent Level Sensor, part of the Mathena™ Mud Gas Separator Intelligent System, accurately meas- ures the liquid levels within the mud gas separator for managed-pressure drilling and underbalanced drilling op- erations, providing accurate kick con- trol and real-time data on-site. This gives operators more time to avoid gas carryover to the active mud system and prevent an overflow situation. The sensor has been successfully used in Wyoming in nitrogen-aerated drilling operations in which overflow is a constant risk. Previously, operators had less than 20 minutes of response time. They now have 3½ hours to prevent overflow and eliminate liquid in the sec- ondary containment vessel, thus reducing downtime and costs. Control valve automa- tion for intelligent active discharge control can be added to further improve kick handling capacity. With this capability, the mud discharge can be closed to maintain the liquid seal needed to prevent gas from reaching the shale shakers, while reduc- ing the risk of vessel overflow and ensur- ing an ideal gas vel- ocity for liquids and solids separation.
