Construction Begins on Germany’s Largest Geothermal Plant Compiled by Caleb Whitaker, Associate Editor WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Construction has started on the Thalkirchen geothermal heating project in the city of Munich, Germany. The plant is expected to produce 50 megawatts of energy. When complete, it will be the largest geothermal heating plant in Germany, supplying heating to up to 80,000 residents. The project was initially slated to have four wells, but a comprehensive 3- D seismic survey in the Munich urban area led to two more wells being added to the project. Daldrup & Söhne AG, which was awarded the contract to build the first four wells for the Munich-based energy provider Stadtwerke München (SWM), has now been commissioned for the extension. A total of six wells will be drilled in a star shape to a depth of 9200- 10,200 feet. After 2950 feet, the wells will be drilled horizontally. The goal is for the production and injection wells in the deep aquifer to be more than 3900 feet apart. At this distance, the cooled water returned to the subsoil will be lifted above the production well. During drilling, a special noise prevention concept will be used, so the impact on the environment should be reduced to a minimum. The concept will include using ongoing measurements to locate and control noise sources imme- diately, noise barriers, a particularly quiet drilling rig, and adapted construction site logistics. The project is part of SWM's ambitious plan to make Munich Germany's first major city to generate all of its district heating from renewable energies by 2040. The biggest portion of this heating is to be generated using geothermal resources. Permeable layers of limestone underneath the city contain vast supplies of this environmentally-friendly energy source. The six wells will be drilled by experienced drilling crews using one of our emission-optimized deep drilling rigs and a noise reduction concept adapted to local conditions.” Due to the size of the wells which will be drilled in an inner-city area, the project is expected to pave the way for using geothermal energy as a renewable energy source in Germany and Europe. Drilling should be completed by the end of 2019, then the plant wi l l be bui lt. Afterward, long-term pumping experi- ments and fine adjustments to the sys- tem will begin.
