Geotechnical Studies in Brazil Benefit from Limited-Access Rigs Adapted from Information by Geoprobe Systems ® Over the past ten years, geotechnical engineering company Damasco Penna has been building up its fleet of Geoprobe ® rigs. The company, based in São Paulo, Brazil, has two 6625CPTs and two 7822DTs in their fleet. Marcelo Penns, civi l engineer and manager of qual i ty for Damasco Penna said, “The versatility of our Geoprobe ® equipment has opened up possibilities to perform diverse kinds of sampling, coring, and other site investigation tests. Our contractors also feel confident when they see our equipment since other companies in our country use improvised rigs to perform similar tests. Due to their versatility, we can work with small teams doing a large scope of site investigations. We are able to perform rock coring, static penetration tests (SPT), soil sampling, concrete coring, and other services all with one or two rigs.” In addition to geotechnical work, the company also performs geo-environ- mental site investigations, soil laborato- ry tests, as wel l as foundations and earthworks consultancy. Penna described the scope of work on one particular project located near Poços de Caldas, a city known for its therapeutic hot springs and spas. “We were hired to complete a geotechnical report,” he explained. “We performed CPTU [piezecone test], DMT [Dilatometer Test], Shelby Samples, and Mechanical SPT soundings. We used our 6625CPT and 7822DT rigs in boreholes [to 98 feet] and also col lected rock samples. Usually, our 6625CPT does the static penetration tests whi le the 7822DT does the soundings and rock coring as well as soil sampling with Shelby sam- ples.” The company also likes how their Geoprobe ® fleet easily meets health and safety codes, since they can be operat- ed by remote control, have moving parts protections, and other safety features. “Our company is really proud of using Geoprobe ® equipment,” Penna stated. “They are very rel iable and easy to operate.
