Customers Inspire New Long-Lasting Sonic Rods Adapted from Information by Geoprobe Systems ® The Geoprobe ® 4.5-inch, heavy-duty (HD) sonic drill rods exemplify the Geoprobe ® advantage of customer-inspired inno- vation to design machines and tools. “As we worked with a growing number of clients utilizing the power of the Geoprobe ® 8150LS GV5 sonic head to go deeper through more difficult subsurface formations, our engineering team recognized an opportunity,” stated engineer Jed Davis. The Geoprobe ® HD sonic drill rods are engineered to withstand continuous use in harsh conditions and complement the 8150LS full-size sonic rig with 50K dy- namic force, which was designed to continuously sam- ple and set casing in excess of 300 feet in a wide range of formations. It consists of two pieces - the sonic drill rod and the coupler. “The two-piece de- sign allows you a lot of versatility,” Davis said. The unique design incorporates breakout flats into the coupler to minimize wear on the jaw pads when breaking tool joints apart. The two-piece design also saves tooling costs, allowing just the coupler to be replaced if the threads are damaged. The rounded pin joint speeds up the stabbing of joints together for a faster con- nection. The tool joint also has a larger cross section, which helps strengthen the drill rod and maximize overall thread life. Operators in the field attest to putting the new Geoprobe ® heavy-duty sonic tool- ing through a ton of hours and footage where a standard rod would give up due to stress. In their experience, the two-piece interchangeable design lasts longer, reduces downtime, and enables breaking them apart easier so the jaw pads last longer. This combination of features ultimately contributes to money-saving benefits in the long term.
