However, there is a pool of potential employees who are trained leaders, organized, disciplined, and know how to operate as a team - Veterans. When Veterans are ready to reenter the work- force, they bring a unique set of skills with them. They have been trained to handle high-stress situations, and value team- work. With more than 200,000 U.S. service members returning to civilian life each year, finding a way to recruit these employees could be the answer you’ve been looking for. Some of the skills which are unique to service members include their training to follow procedures and being accountable. After all, in the military the “that’s not my job” attitude doesn’t go very far; Veterans have more of a “let’s get the job done” men- tality. They also know how to succeed under pressure and how to keep their cool while completing tasks in a timely and efficient manner. Plus, their military experience has exposed them to advanced technology and technical training One company taking advantage of this untapped resource, is Coeur Mining, Inc. The company, based in Illinois with operations in North America, recognized the hardworking nature of military members and believed they would be a perfect fit for the mining industry, so they cre- ated a program called Coeur Heroes. The recruitment and mentoring program is designed to build on the Veteran’s existing skills and experience gained through military service. “As a veteran, I am proud and honored to be a part of the Coeur Heroes program,” said Jorge Rodriguez, director of human resources at Coeur and retired United States Navy Lieutenant Commander. “Coeur Heroes helps to highlight the abundant and underutilized talents that veterans can bring to Coeur. I appreciate the opportunity to recruit fellow Veterans and assist them as they transition into their second career.” The company’s U.S. operations work with military recruitment offices, National Guard units, and military bases to offer on- the-job-training for military veterans transitioning from active duty to the civilian workforce. Current company employees who are Veterans become mentors, as well as a vital resource for Veterans in the program. Consider creating a program within your organization. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers several tools to assist you, including federal tax credits, salary subsidies, and even workplace modifications for employers hiring qualifying Veterans. We can honor the Veterans who have served our country by providing employment opportunities and a chance for them to fully participate in the society they have given so much to protect.
