China Completes Drilling of Deep Borehole Adapted from Information by the China Geological Survey In 2014, the China Geological Survey, along with about 20 organizations, including the Institute of Exploration Technology, SinoProbe Center, China University of Geosciences, Jilin University, and Daqing Oilfield Co. began the Songke 2 project in Anda, Heilongjiang Province, China. The project has now been completed, with the drilling of the deepest borehole for scientific purposes by Asians. The Sonke 2 borehole did not reach the depth of the Kola borehole in northwestern Russia, which remains the deepest in the world at 40,300 feet; however, the Sonke 2 borehole is the first borehole in the world to go through the continental layer of strata from the earth's cretaceous period. The borehole reached a depth of over 23,000 feet. The Sonke 2 borehole is located in the Songliao Basin, one of the largest continental sedimentary basins in the world. The basin holds China's most important reserves of oil and natural gas. Wang Chengshan, the chief scientist on the project from the Chinese Academy of Sciences said, “In the 21st century, we have to face new challenges of survival and development, as well as huge chal- lenges of resource scarcity, environmental change, and frequent disasters. Therefore, we must go further into the deep earth, which has become the consensus of all the scientists in the world.” Important scientific papers are expected to emerge from the project, including descriptions of past climate change due to volcanism and a physical impact at the cretaceous-tertiary boundary, making Songliao an even more important site for China. Cheng Qiuming, secretary-general of the International Union of Geological Sciences said, “The success of the project will provide key technologies and equipment for exploration and experimental research deep within the earth.
