This slice of cheese is not about April Fool’s Day, but rather about avery serious book many of us will recall reading and rereading:Who Moved My Cheese? Who Moved My Cheese? Yes, it happens to each of us, and sometimes more often than not. Forinstance; the economy has moved our cheese; the weather has moved ourcheese; health has moved our cheese; and I could go on and on - but I’dquickly run out of paper and there, my cheese would be moved again! How does the WWDRWWDRTeam overcome our cheese being moved? Weadjust, keep smiling, and change things up a bit in our daily, weekly, monthly, yearly routines. And believe it or not, all of this makes for a better life andworld for all of us here and probably would for you too.So, if you haven’t read the book, you are probably thinking “Ronnie has gone and done it ~ she’s gone bonkers!” Notreally. Just go to the library (if that hasn’t been moved on you), or buy the book. Read it once, and I guarantee you, you willwind up reading it again and again because it does really make sense and helps us all adjust our lives with thecheese being moved.Hey. I almost forgot to tell you. Check out this month’s centerfold. Our Cheese Really Has Moved and Boy, Are We Smiling! Little Pleasuresby Tim ConnorLife is all about gratitude for the little things, the things we often takefor granted. Oh yes, there are big achievements, big plans, big toys, bigstuff, big problems, and big failures. These pass, often leaving broken orchallenged spirits or hearts in their wake. It's the little things in life that real-ly matter.Life accumulates moment by moment, day by day. In each moment inour life there is the potential for new awareness, new growth, miracles, new thoughts, and new sights, sounds, and tastes. Each of these often comes disguised in the little events that surround us daily. A smile from a stranger, a sincere hug from afriend, an unexpected call that says “you matter and I care”, a rainbow, a double rainbow . . .How about when:4All the traffic lights turn green as you pass through town.4The rain stops just as you leave the protection of your car (you forgot your umbrella).4Your plane is on time.4You find something important youthought was lost. There are millions of other littlepleasures each day, if only we wouldtake the time to notice. A dear friendshared this concept of little pleasureswith me. I wanted to pass it along toyou, thinking it might do for you what itdid for me - keep me focused on whatmatters in life, and not what doesn't.Little pleasures are all of thoseunimportant signals, events, situations, signs, people, circumstances that makeyou smile. The way it works is this ~ findsomething positive you want to focuson today. For example, today you willnotice everyone who looks at you whilesitting in your car waiting for the light toturn green. When they return your glance, you will give them a warm, broad smile.Today, every time the sun passesbehind a cloud you will think of howmuch in life you are grateful for.You will notice the kind words otherssay about you and will feel warm andpeaceful inside.Well, I have given you the philosophyand a few ideas. Why not start everyday this week with a little pleasure? A few questions:1) Do you pay attention to life's little pleasures?2) If not, why not?3) How would you define littlepleasures?4) How do you bring little pleasures to others each day?TimTim Connor may becontacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com7WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®APRIL 2020

It would most likely be the solutionchosen by the system operators as aresult of not fully understanding thedynamics of the system they are taskedwith operating. Resetting is tantamountto releasing a habitual criminal backinto society to continually “re-offend”,and doesn’t fix anything. This turning off and then turningback on again is what is called a “poweron” RESET. So what is a “RESET”? Allmicroprocessors (the silicon “brains”operating all computer systems) havewhat is called a “reset vector”. It meansthe place chosen to start the programexecution. This is critically important. If pro-gram execution happens at the wrongplace, it will produce the wrong resultsevery time, and those results could becatastrophic. To address this issue, allmicroprocessor manufacturers havespent considerable time and moneymaking sure the program execution startsat the reset vector location. This opera-tion is called “fetching the reset vector”.Most of the time this fetching thereset vector is accomplished by simplyturning on power to the computer. Themicroprocessor automatically goes tothe proper location on power up and theprogram instructions start executingfrom there. In addition, immediatelyafter the reset vector operation, almostalways there are what are called initial-ization routines. Initialization involves writing the cor-rect values to the appropriate memoryregisters to ensure proper operationStorksoncont’donpage20.

BattersbyTrade, Sell, and Maybe Abandon with a Low Tax BillIt is no surprise many drilling professionals don’t understand the tax ramifications of disposing of busi-ness property. Under our often confusing and complex current rules, there are numerous ways to disposeof business assets - such as selling, scrapping, exchanging it for another business asset, or even givingit away.Even with a simple sale, the tax treatment can be quite complex with a number of rules affecting theoutcome of any transaction - including how losses are viewed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and how a portion of thesale may have to be “recaptured” if the sale involves property depreciated in the past.A drilling operation can generally sell its unused or unneeded equipment, machinery, and other business assets on the in-stallment method. Selling with payments to be received in installments means taxable income is created only as payments arereceived.New, more restrictive rules mean a drilling operation can no longer treat trade-ins as nontaxable events. Instead, whenthe old asset is traded for a new one, tax must be paid on the gain, if any. So, yes, it applies when a vehicle is traded-in.Remember, all business assets - including vehicles - are depreciated. It is the difference between the value shown on theoperation's books and the amount realized or given credit for that is used in the gain or loss computation. With the standardvehicle write-off, depreciation is implied - although not usually shown. And, before you ask, when you take advantage of the100% bonus depreciation or the Section 179 expense allowance, it brings the book value down to zero, creating a gain if any-thing is realized when replaced with a new, more valuable asset. It wasn’t too long ago, before the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), a business would exchange so-called“like-kind” property and defer taxable gain until the property was ultimately sold. However, beginning with exchanges after theDecember 31, 2017, passage of the TCJA, deferring recognition of gain using a like-kind exchange will only work with realestate. Real estate includes land and generally anything built on or attached to it.Abandonment losses from business or investment property are generally deductible as ordinary losses. Of course, aban-donment of property held for personal use is nondeductible. An involuntary conversion is an event not initiated by the drilling business, but refers to the conversion of the operation’sproperty into similar or dissimilar property due to condemnation (actual or threatened), theft, seizure, requisition usually insti-gated by a government unit, or destruction. An involuntary conversion does not include any voluntary acts, such as when thebusiness destroys its own property.Depreciation recapture means the IRS can require a business to “pay back” amounts claimed as bonus depreciation orother fast write-offs. Under our tax rules, a disposition occurs when a business sells, exchanges, retires, abandons, suffers an involuntaryconversion, or destroys. Each has tax consequences and, thanks to the complexity of the tax rules, professional guidancemay be necessary to reap the most benefit and smallest tax bill.Mark Mark E. 16APRIL 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Gas and Oil Industry Brings Texas to the TopAdapted from Information by the Texas Oil & Gas AssociationAccording to the latest energy and economic impact report by theTexas Oil & Gas Association (TXOGA), the gas and oil industry paidmore than $16 billion in state and local taxes and state royalties in2019, the highest total in Texas history. The state continues to leadthe way not only in oil and natural gas production, but also in pipelines, refining, liquid natural gas (LNG), and exports. In many ways, 2019 was a year of exceptional production for the U.S. gas and oil industry. Thanks to Texas, the country witnessed record-breaking production while becoming a net oil exporterthe first full month recorded in the country. The state’s unprecedented growth in production, pipeline construction, refining, and LNG expansionshas also translated to record-breaking revenue for the state. In fact, the Texas gas and oil industryshattered records, paying an estimated $16.28 billion to state and local treasuries, an increase of 16%from 2018. This translates to about $44 million a day. Since 2007, when TXOGA first started compilingthe data, the industry has paid more than $149 billion in state and local taxes and state royalties.Oil and natural gas royalties to state funds - particularly the Permanent University Fund (PUF)and Permanent School Fund (PSF), which support Texas public education - also broke records infiscal year 2019. In fact, 98% of the state’s oil and natural gas royalties were deposited into thesefunds with the PUF receiving $1.02 billion and the PSF receiving $1.11 billion. The gas and oil industry also provides good paying jobs for the people of Texas. On average,Texas gas and oil employers paid $125,248 per job in 2019, while other private sector jobs paid lessthan half that with an average of $56,902.With billions of dollars invested, hundreds of thousands of employees, and $16 billion in taxes androyalties paid last year alone, the gas and oil industry continues to be the heartbeat of the Texas economy.Editor’s Note: In between our print issues, the WWDRWWDRTeam prepares an electronic newsletter calledE-News FlashE-News Flash. Radiant Buildings,Renewable Resourcesby Nancy Argyle for Sonic Drill CorporationIn Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), Canada, rated the third bestcity in the world in 2019 by Mercer Consulting, one thing is very clear -geothermal has a lot of fans. With a population of more than two million people in the GreaterVancouver area enjoying one of the highest ratings for quality of life, many are also choosing geothermal systems for residential, municipaland commercial builds. Considering the numerous benefits, it’s not sur-prising to see large construction projects embracing geothermal but it’sespecially gratifying to see how many individual residential projectshave also opted in.Since geothermal installations work by moving heat instead of cre-ating heat, there are many environmental benefits including a reducedcarbon footprint as well as the use of a sustainable renewable resourcethat already exists in the ground beneath homes and buildings - a win-win for everyone.“Due to increasing awareness of global warming issues, eventually,I expect geothermal to become the gold standard for new homes,” saidRay Roussy, president of Sonic Drilling Ltd. in Surrey, BC, Canada.Roussy, an engineer, is the developer and patent holder of modernsonic drilling technology whichis now in use across six conti-nents and in various applications. His drilling method has won four awards for besttechnology and he has subsequently patented the use of sonic drilling specifically forgeothermal installations.Meet the Fastest Drill on the Planet- With the ability to drill through mixed soilsat a rate of 3-5 times faster than traditional methods, Roussy’s sonic drills are alreadythe speediest on the planet but they come with an additional advantage that makesthem ideal for geothermal installations, both big and small. In a patented one-stepoperation, sonic drills are able to drill the hole, case it, install the geothermal loop andthen fill the hole with grout - something that no other technology in the world can do.With a clear savings from reduced on-site project time, sonic drills have quickly become the preferred drilling method for geo-thermal installations. Vancouver Airport Catches Geothermal Fever- In an attempt to significantly reduce greenhouse gases, the VancouverAirport Authority recently embarked on an ambitious $360 million geothermal project to construct a new Central UtilitiesBuilding which will house all the necessary equipment to heat and cool the airport. The airport’s new geo-exchange systemwill initially use approximately 1100geothermal holes, drilled 400-500 feetbelowground, with additional holesplanned for future projects.Considering the airport’s soil condi-tions, which can be challenging for tra-ditional drilling methods, the VancouverAirport Authority opted to use Roussy’ssonic drilling technology - given that it isable to drill easily and quickly as well asprovide one-step geothermal loopinstallation. With his BC-developed sonicdrilling technology now 35 years old,Roussy said he is delighted to see it atwork on so many local projects, know-ing the benefits it brings and the role itplays in furthering a clean energyfuture.TWISTER™TWISTER™High-Efficiency GeothermalHeat ExchangerIncrease the value of your bore 50%Increase bore capacity 50%Reduce required drilling by 1/3Installs like a standard HDPEloopComplete more installationsin less timeManufactured from standardHDPEgeo pipe material(866) 499-2220 info@agreenability.comwww.agreenability.comSaves Time, Space, and Money!!See our article onpage 30.17WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®APRIL 2020ENVOpen the Doorway to all theEvent Photos during UndergroundConstruction Technology 2020To see more photos from this event, go towww.worldwidedrillingresource.comFeel free to download at will and print thephoto(s) of your choice.Compliments ofWorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®.Photos are copyrighted and released for personaluse only - no commercial use permitted.

Through the Back Door!by Jim KuebelbeckFor a number of years, I have submitted articles for publication, and have been graciously allowed toshare many stories not only of my experiences as a water dowser, but other stories of some of my life expe-riences. Perhaps I have bored WWDRWWDRreaders with some of my articles regarding what I consider to be atrue human ability (in certain individuals) to somehow sense the presence of satisfactory groundwatersources by the dowsing method. It was never my intent to push my views or opinions upon anyone, but tosimply relate what I have discovered about my personal experience. In this regard, I cannot fault well drilling professionals who are less than willing to put their own reputations on the line by workingwith many of the self-professed water dowsers who have little or no proven ability in this area of human endeavor. In all too manycases, many would-be inexperienced water dowsers eagerly offer advice about the presence of underground water sources only todiscover later that their predictions had no basis in fact. It is far from the truth that because an individual is able to obtain a dows-ing response from some type of device or instrument, that what they are sensing is the presence of an underground water source! We, as individuals, are all born with unique God-given talents and abilities, and it is up to us as individuals to discover anddevelop whatever abilities we might have been endowed with. Sadly, some people go through life without discovering, or attempt-ing to discover or develop, whatever latent talents or abilities they might possess. The late Grandma Moses (of artistic fame) for example, and countless others like her around the world, have often discoveredlate in life what particular abilities have lay dormant and can be developed. Grandma Moses (Anna Mary Robertson) only started paint-ing in earnest at the age of 78, and is oftencited as an example of an individual whosuccessfully began a career in the arts at anadvanced age. When asked about her sud-den fame and success as a painter, she wasquoted as saying, “If I hadn't started paint-ing, I'd probably have raised chickens.”Oh how I wish many of the self-pro-claimed, inexperienced water dowsers overthe years had raised chickens, instead ofgoing out and offering misguided predic-tions about the presence of undergroundwater sources! Such is life. The statements and comments in thisarticle are based on information and ref-erences believed to be true and factual. For example, if you want a computer-controlled device to be “off” whenyou power it up, you must tell it to do so. Often, this is done within the initializationroutine. Since most static RAM* data contents are unknown upon start-up, if this is notdone, the RAM data values controlling the on-off function could have it power up either on or off, and whether it powered up onor off would be totally unpredictable. A reset vector operation can be executed at other times besides power-up as well. Most well-designed computer systemshave hardware** and software*** used for detecting abnormal program operation. If that happens, the reset vector is triggered, which forces the computer program to start over and almost always corrects the corrupted data so the program can operate cor-rectly. Most of the time, this is not transparent to the user . . . meaning the user is unaware this is happening and can use thecomputer as he or she normally would. All microprocessors have an external RESET pin so a hardware reset can be assertedusing an external mechanical switch or other component. The problem with this approach is everything the microprocessor isdoing instantly stops. I’ve worked in the technology industry, and one would not believe how many times incredibly expensivecomputer systems had to be reset. All or part of the system would be “locked up” andrefused to work until it was reset.Any reset that requires operator intervention, in my opinion, constitutes an unac-ceptable failure and should be grounds for rejection and replacement of the equip-ment. We have been building computers long enough to know how to make sure theyoperate correctly without humans having to clean up their messes. We use many microprocessor-based products every day that never need to beRESET. It’s because most customers would not accept a product that needs to beRESET periodically. It has even been reported that pilots have needed to RESET autopilot computer in-flight - not a comfortingthought for those whose lives depend on the computer to get them to their destination in one piece. That’s why I advocate the pilots fly the plane and the computer serve to make the pilots better, but that’s a conversation foranother time. Of course, there will be rare exceptions where failures are not the fault of the equipment, but those will be excep-tions and not the rule as is now the case. The bottom line is, we build the equipment to operate as reliably as humanly possible.Anything less should be rejected out-of-hand.*RAM stands for Random Access Memory, which is volatile memory - meaning when powered up, the memory contents areunknown.**Hardware in a computer context is equipment that is physically present. Drilling Progress in SaskatchewanAdapted from Information byDEEP Earth Energy Production Corp.DEEP Earth Energy Production Corp.’s drilling and testing program is under-way. They plan to drill up to five stratigraphic wells, to further define the field’s geo-thermal reservoir parameters for the proposed power plant in SoutheasternSaskatchewan, Canada. In August 2019, DEEP completed a flow and pressure buildup test on theBorder-01 well to assess reservoir pressure and well deliverability. Pressure dataaffirmed the existence of fracture flow contributions sought after for geothermalprojects, and the stimulated maximum production rate for this well supported thepotential for an economically viable project.Following the flow and buildup test, a series of injectivity and fall-off tests wereconducted, which further affirmed a significant portion of the fluid contribution pro-duced from Border-01 is sourcedform a fractured reservoir system. After the tests were complete, theremaining brine in the tank farmwas disposed into the well, whichaccepted the fluids at high rates, limited only to the capacity of theinjection pump. This confirmed thereservoir’s capability to flow in bothdirections - to produce, as well asaccept, injected fluids. The first of the new wells(Border-02A) was completed in December 2019. It was drilled from the same sur-face location as Border-01, directionally to the southwest, to a depth of 12,500 feet, with a bottom hole located 4900 feet from Border-01. Border-02B well was drilledto 12,700 feet, and 11,900 feet true vertical depth from the surface. It was drilledfrom the same wellbore as Border-02Aas a whipstock, enabling more data tobe acquired between it and Border-01,at a reduced cost compared to drilling aseparate well from the surface.Border-02B exceeded the recorddepth of Border-01 by an additional 330feet true vertical depth, making it thedeepest well ever drilled in Saskatchewan.Border-03, -04, and -05 wells will bedrilled with two separate rigs to com-plete the program in less time. This multiwell drilling program willgreatly increase the confidence in thegeological model, regional airbornemagnetic data geological interpretation, and test recently acquired 3-D seismicdata. It will achieve flow and injectiontesting to optimize the locations anddesign of full-sized production wellsplanned to be drilled later in 2020 and2021. These current wells will also havesignificant value for monitoring thereservoir response during and afterlarge-scale development required for afull geothermal field and power plant.302-684-3197FAX: 302-384-0643142 Broadkill Rd. • Milton, DE 19968www.atlantic-screen.comemail: atlantic@ce.netManufacturers of Slotted & Perforated Pipe ranging from ½” to 24” diameterAtlanticScreen &Mfg., Inc.• Well Rehab. The Un-Comfort Zone IIby Robert Evans Wilson, Jr.Narcissists Prefer Dogs ~ Codependents CatsNarcissists prefer dogs. Think about it; it just makes sense! Many narcissists like to be the center of attention. A dog willalways make the master its primary focus. When the master ison the move, the dog follows. When the master sits, the dog liesdown nearby and keeps a steady eye on him or her. When themaster gets up, the dog follows again, eagerly awaiting a command or other recognition.A cat, on the other hand, isn’t focused on the master at all . . . well, unless it'shungry. If the master wants attention from the cat, he or she must give treats, brush itsfur, get out the laser pointer and play (technically this doesn’t create heedfulness ofthe master), or otherwise cajole the cat’s attention. In other words, you must serve thecat. It’s the perfect role for codependents because they understand doing this so well. No, I haven’t done any formal study on this, but as a narcissist-magnet for muchof my life, it has been my personal observation of the many narcissists who havecome through my life over the years. As an admitted codependent, I am a natural catlover, who has served many a mysterious and aloof cat.Narcissists are control freaks, and dogs are easily trained to do what their mastercommands. Tasks make the dog, who always wants to please, feel useful. Dogs willcome when you call. On your command, they will sit, lie down, shake hands, rollover, fetch, walk on their hind legs, and many more entertaining activities that thrill the nar-cissist’s need to dominate and control.Cats can’t be controlled at all. They certainly don’t come when you call (unlessthey hear a can of food opening at the same time). While somewhat domesticated(they do enjoy living in houses which have plenty of soft things to lie on), cats stillretain an independent wild streak. They don’t need humans. Turn them loose outside, and they’ll kill their own food: birds, rodents, snakes, and bugs. If they like you, theymight even bring home some of their fresh kill so you can partake in the feasting aswell (this represents the apex of giving from a cat). Now that’s the kind of approval acodependent can really sink his or her teeth into.Dogs, however, can’t fend for themselves out in the world on their own. They don’tknow how to find food, other than raiding garbage cans, and will soon starve to death. They are completely dependent on theirmasters. Narcissists love this.Codependents and dogs just don’t work as well together because they are both constantly competing to see who can givethe most love to the other. Codependents, who never received parental love, who had to give and give and give in the hopes ofgetting a scrap of affection, find the unrelenting love of dogs disconcerting.Cats, however, provide the familiar emotionally unavailable attitude to whichthey are accustomed. Codependents are used to a lack of love, of having topatiently wait for attention, and spending their lives hoping, praying, and tryingever harder to please . . . until they can finally get their cat to sit in their lap, cuddle, and purr. Dogs can never supply this same sense of satisfaction.Dogs love their masters unconditionally - so unconditionally they will endureabuse and neglect yet still love and adore their master. This is perfect for the self-centered narcissist, whose needs must come first, who is sometimes simply toobusy to play with the dog, feed, walk, or take it to the vet. A dog patiently waits, doesn’tjudge or complain, and is ready to serve its master at a moment’s notice. Whathuman would do that? A dog is a readily available, low-cost, low-obligation, sourceof narcissistic supply. And, when dogs no longer serve the narcissist's needs- they’re disposable - no messy breakups. No wonder narcissists prefer dogs.Note to Reader:My intention in this piece is to be somewhat funny in aself-deprecatory manner, as well as bring attention to the pet preferences ofpersonality types in a satirical manner. I am in no way implying ALL dog own-ers are narcissists or ALL cat owners are codependents (hmm, I may have totake that back, if you’re a happy and satisfied cat owner, then you’re most like-ly codependent - yep - totally codependent).RobertRobert is an innovation/change speaker, author, and consultant. 30APRIL 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Adding Value to Geothermal BoreholesAdapted from Information by AgreenabilityAcross the globe, geothermal drilling has surged in response to the demand for a cleaneralternative to heating and cooling buildings. Although the increased market for geothermal drillingis great news for drilling professionals, it’s also bringing more competition from drill operators wantinga piece of the business.Derek Stewart from Catskills Geothermal and WellDrilling, a third generation well drilling professional, hasbeen drilling geothermal wells for several years. Recently,he began searching for a solution to a number of problems.Increased competition has brought the price of geothermaldrilling down. Derek is well versed in technological improvementssuch as high-conductivity grout and the more recent intro-duction of graphite-enhanced grout, to help improve heattransfer. So, when he came across the TWISTER™ high-efficiency, multiloop geoexchange pipe fromAgreenability, he was excited to discover such an effective solution. Knowing each foot is expensiveto drill, but also being limited in what he could charge per foot, TWISTER™ offered a way to increasethe value of a borehole without having to drill deeper.TWISTER™ increases the rate of heat exchange between the heattransfer fluid and ground so effectively, it can increase the capacity of a300-foot bore from two tons (with standard 1¼-inch pipe) to three tons, representing a 50% increase in value of the borehole. The increased valuemeans drill operators can charge more per foot. Although TWISTER™costs more than standard pipe, the additional cost is easily recoveredby the increased value of the borehole. While it’s a drastic improvement over standard technology, it’s constructed with the samereliable HDPE (high density polyethylene) materials and meets requirements of IGSHPA (InternationalGround Source Heat Pump Association), as well as most state geothermal well specifications. Best of all, it’s installed the exactsame way as a standard loop, so you don’t have to change the installation process. Please see the ad for TWISTER on page 17.GEOThe twisted eight-pipeassembly is deliveredon a continuous coil upto 500-feet long and fitsinto a 5½- to 6-inch bore.

Ourfirst volunteer drill operator arrived andstarted up the rotary well drill. He isfrom Iowa, where he drills in “oatmeal”and found it quite a challenge to grindthrough limestone rocks of all shapesand sizes. Nevertheless, he drilledabout seven holes in about two weeks,so I had to get pumps ready to makethose holes become wells. For thosewho don’t know, I drill out the pivotpoints on these hand pumps to acceptstainless steel bushings to keep thecast iron from wearing out. To a limitedextent, I can repair old pumps that dohave enlarged holes from wear, andmake them jungle ready again.Last Thursday, I was invited to helpinstall pumps on two new holes wedrilled. That’s the most exciting part ofthis whole adventure - worth all themoney, time, and effort since we get tosee the exhilaration of the residents asthey see that first stream of H2O appearfrom the spout on the hand pumps. Then they start washing their handsand face, and soon splashing it on eachother. It’s like chocolate to Americans! Some of the old ladies are smilingthrough their tears of joy, and the youngladies are happy they don’t have towalk half a mile carrying dirty water theycan’t drink. We try to tell them don’tdrink the well water quite yet so the pipecan clean itself and the chlorine getsflushed out that we disinfect the wellwith is gone, but they are cupping theirhands and drinking, or tasting at least.Think about all that the next time youtake a drink from your faucet.34APRIL 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®WTRRasmussencont’donpage38.
Environmental Monitoringby Thomas Kwader, Ph.D., P.G.WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®HydrogeologistMother Nature’s Groundwater Purification System - Please Do Not Disturb! Most groundwater we pump from wells, often ranging from a few feet to a few hundred feet in depth,is usually of drinking water quality requiring little or no treatment. Fortunately, most all groundwater hasits origin as rainwater which begins in the water cycle by evaporating from surface water bodies up intothe atmosphere. This distillation process leaves behind many types of impurities in the surface water andsends the clean water up into the atmosphere to clouds via evaporation. However, during this evaporation process, the as-cending water may pick up carbonic and sulfuric acid (from auto exhaust, coal-fired power plants, etc.) which can cause therainwater to be slightly acidic.Groundwater is likely to become contaminated while percolating into shallow soils by absorbing various contaminantssuch as: salts, fuels, bacteria, metals, nitrates, etc. Fortunately, groundwater is often purified as it percolates into the subsurfacelayers through numerous types of natural filters that remove or destroy unwanted contamination through various biological, chemical, and physical filters.Surface soils commonly contain various microorganisms (bacteria) in the soil column. Sands and clays also act as me-chanical filters that remove turbidity. Various harmful bacteria (such as sewage from septic tanks) are often unable to survivephysical changes from oxidizing to reducing (anaerobic) conditions as they percolate deeper into anaerobic depths. Fuel typecompounds can supply a source of carbon for bacteria to break down carbon - hydrogen - oxygen molecules into less toxiccompounds which can be used by various plants and animals. In summary, this natural sequence of: 1) “filters” which mechanically remove microscopic turbidity to produce clear ornonturbid groundwater; 2) “oxidizing and reducing conditions” are capable of destroying harmful bacteria and viruses; 3) pres-ence of “organic matter” peat and carbon substrate can adsorb harmful forms of toxic metals; and, 4) “plants” can removenitrates and phosphates from percolating groundwaters.Efforts should be taken to restore these natural layers when we as humans disrupt them by penetrating or removing theselayered treatment systems. It takes a very long time to return the natural purification system and, ideally to protect our ground-water, these layers should not be disturbed.Tom Tom Kwader may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.comNitrate Coated Premium Liners5x6, 5x8, & 5x10 Gardner Denver5-1/2x8 & 5-1/2x10 Gardner Denver7-1/2x8 & 7-1/2x10 Gardner DenverRods Heat-Treated & Chromed5x6, 5x8, & 5-1/2x8 Gardner Denver5x10 & 5-1/2x10 Gardner Denver7-1/2x8 & 7-1/2x10 Gardner DenverNew Pumps In StockGardner Denver 4x5 TEE Triplex.Gardner Denver 5-1/2x5 TEE TriplexGardner Denver 4x5 or 4-1/2x5 DuplexGardner Denver 5x6 DuplexGardner Denver 5x6 Air Drive DuplexGardner Denver 5x8 DuplexGardner Denver 5-1/2x8 DuplexGardner Denver 7-1/2x8 DuplexGardner Denver 7-1/2x10 DuplexGardner Denver 5-1/2x5 THE TriplexGardner Denver 5x8 PAH TriplexCall for Prices. We Have a Variety of Brandsof Mud Pump Parts andPower Units in Stock.Special or Obsolete Parts Made to Order.Cash for SurplusMud Pumps.Rebuilt Mud Pumps4-1/2x6 Gaso Duplex4-1/2x6 Oilwell DuplexGardner Denver 4-1/2x8 PA-8 TriplexGardner Denver 5x6 DuplexGardner Denver 5x10 DuplexGaso 5x10 DuplexOVER 300 PUMPS IN STOCKArmstrong Machine Co. Notes from theGroundwaterGuyby Thomas E. Ballard, P.G., C.H.G.Southeast Hydrogeology, PLLCChlorine: Fact and FictionDespite the fact chlorine is probablythe most widely used chemical in the waterwell industry, it is likely the most misunder-stood. Most commonly used for disinfectionof wells, chlorine is often used for other pur-poses, where it is much less effective or evenharmful to the well. I have attended classesand webinars with so-called experts whohave advocated chlorine for treating biofilmand dissolving mineral incrustations where,in actuality, chlorine is completely ineffective at these applications.Chlorine is most effective as a biocide against free-swimming bacteria (as opposed to biofilms attached to the well). However, to be used for this purpose, one must understand a bit about the chemistry of chlorine and chlorine compounds. When we talk chlorine, we are usually talking about compounds which contain chlorine. Chlorine itself is an element inthe form of Cl2, whereas chlorine compounds are those chemicals which contain the active chlorine. In well drilling, there are two commonly used chlorine compounds:Sodium hypochloriteis common bleach that comes in liquid form and is often used for disinfection in well drilling andconstruction. There are several challenges in using sodium hypochlorite: it has a short shelf life of about six months; it isvery caustic and can corrode wells; and, it is pH (acidity) sensitive, meaning it is most effective within a narrow pH range. The short shelf life means the available chlorine in the bleach you are using can vary widely and result in uncertain dis-infection effects.Calcium hypochloritehas about 65%-70% available chlorine, comes in a solid, and has a shelf life of about a year.Calcium hypochlorite should be mixed at the surface then applied, because pellets and granules may not dissolve com-pletely when just dropped into the well. With any of the chlorine compounds, the target compound you want to form for disinfection purposes is hypochlorousacid (HOCl). However, due to variables such as pH, temperature, water chemistry, hardness, and alkalinity, the amount ofhypochlorous acid produced can vary. For example, hypochlorous acid is most stable at a pH of about five, yet most chlorinecompounds will want to move the pH out of this optimal range, making the chlorine less effective. For this reason, when usingsodium or calcium hypochlorite, it isimportant to also use a buffering com-pound to stabilize the pH, or use a chlo-rine product which is pre-combined witha pH buffer. This will hold the pH in theproper range for most effective disinfec-tion results.TomTom Ballard may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com36APRIL 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Congratulations to:Congratulations to:James Torlish & SonsJames Torlish & SonsArmonk, NYArmonk, NYWinner for March!Winner for March!Time for a Little Fun!March Puzzle Solution:Drill King InternationalFlomatic CorporationWin a prize! Last week, one of our nationalstook a call from a resident in some vil-lage where we drilled last year - just toexpress their thanks that there hadbeen no waterborne illness since weinstalled their well, whereas previouslythe village was constantly having to dealwith water illnesses. Praise the Lord wecould bring them health through cleanwater.Tomorrow, we are going to install -for the first time - a new type of handpump made by Agua 4 Vita. We aregoing to do the testing for the manufac-turer. From the pump on the surface, water is forced down to a flexible bladder enclosed in a metal tube, which is about a quarter bigger than the bladder. As thebladder expands, it forces water up the discharge pipe to the top of the pump. As the handle on the pump is pressed down, the hydraulic pressure is reduced in the bladder and it collapses to its normalshape, thus sucking more water into the metal tube. Then the upstroke of the han-dle on the pump pressurizes and expands the bladder again, forcing the water inthe tube up the discharge pipe to the top. Got it? This new principle type should lastmuch longer than our old pumps with the cylinder, leathers, and piston at the bot-tom of the well. We’ll see. We are excited to test it out. We can pump from muchdeeper wells now if we have to, but most of our wells are pumping from between60 and 100 feet, but this one we are installing will be at 130 feet. Wow, what a day! Four wells visited and the new Vita pump installed. It’s work-ing flawlessly and the villagers couldn’t be happier! And so are we since we antic-ipate hardly any maintenance for several years based on how it operates. It is a littleharder to pump, but it’s also pumping from 130 feet, so I’m guessing it would be about the same as the old handpump from that depth. As several guystried their arms at raising a lowering thepump handle, the villagers were enjoyinghilarious laughter from their comments. Then one of the ladies volunteered totry it, and she was excited as well. It isemotional for me to experience their joyover something as basic as clean waterthat we hardly give second thoughts to.[More from Larry next month.]If you would like to help, contact Gary Bartholomew at 509-466-5075 or 509-939-1941TimTim Rasmussen may be contactedvia e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com38APRIL 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®The HYDRO-ARC 6500 SJSBC multifunction A/Cgenerator and D/C welderfrom Fabco Power provides the mobilepower to fix everything, anywhere.Hydraulically driven, it easily installsinto the existing hydraulics, eliminatingthe need for a second engine. First District Heating SystemUtilizing Mine WaterAdapted from Information by the United Kingdom GovernmentConstruction of a geothermal district heating system utilizing minewater is underway in Seaham, County Durham, United Kingdom. TheSeaham Garden Village development will have 750 apartments, 750 pri-vate homes, a school, shops, and medical facilities, located near existingcommercial buildings.Geothermal heat will be supplied from the Coal Authority’s nearbyDawdon mine water treatment facility, which treats water abstracted froman extensive network of flooded abandoned coal mines in the area. Some years ago, the Coal Authority identified a risk to an aquifer dueto rising water in the old mine. The mine water, containing more salt than sea water, could significantly diminish the quality ofthe drinking water if something wasn’t done. So the unique solution toprotect the aquifer was to create a state-of-the-art active chemical treat-ment plant. Quality and quantity of the mine water, along with limitedavailability of land, the sensitive location being near a coast, and anearby rail line crossing and road presented challenges. The buildingwas designed to fit in with local development, and 89% of the wastegenerated during plant construction was recycled in the process. Solarpanels were installed on the roof of the main building to produce elec-tricity to offset the cost of running the pumps. Heat exchangers, as wellas a domestic heat pump, were installed to capture heat from the minewater and is currently provided to the offices, workshops, and crewrooms of the treatment facility. The UK Coal Authority is committed to creating a green future from the abandoned mines. Mine water can be an important, sustainable source of energy for the UK, while providing many commercial benefits and employment opportunities. It is thoughtthere is enough energy potential in the UK’s flooded mines to heat all of the homes on the coalfields.39WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®APRIL 2020MIN

Space Reservation: April 25thDisplay & ClassifiedAd Copy: May 1stHelium is produced duringthe nuclear decay of uranium.April is National SafeDigging MonthAdapted from Information by theCommon Ground AllianceKnowing what’s belowground beforedrilling or digging is very important. Anunderground utility line is damaged everysix minutes nationwide because someonedecided to dig without calling 811 first. The Common Ground Alliance (CGA)is the association dedicated to protectingunderground utility lines and the safetyof people who dig near them. Digging without knowing the approx-imate location of underground utilities canresult in damage to gas, electric, commu-nications, water and sewer lines, whichleads to service disruptions, serious in-juries, and costly repairs. There are more than 20 million milesof underground utilities in the UnitedStates, which equates to more than 105yards of buried utilities for every man, woman, and child in the U.S.The process is simple:1.Call 811 from anywhere in thecountry a few days prior to diggingor drilling. Your call will automaticallybe routed to your local one call center.2.Give the operator information abouthow to contact you, where you areplanning to dig, and what type of workyou will be doing. 3.Utility companies with potentialfacilities in the area of your dig sitewill be notified about your intent todig or drill.4.Within 2-3 working days, eachaffected utility company will send alocator to mark the approximate lo-cation of your underground utilitylines. 5.Manually dig around the markscarefully.Calling 811 is the easiest way tomakesure you are doing your part tokeep communities safe. By calling 811before digging, you have less than a 1%chance of striking a buried utility line.
