No-Cost Service Can Improve Workplace SafetyAdapted from Information by Occupational Safety and Health AdministrationThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA's) On-Site Consultation Programoffers no-cost, confidential occupational safety and health services to small- and medium-sizedbusinesses in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories, with priority givento high-hazard worksites. On-Site Consultation services are separate from enforcement and do notresult in penalties or citations. Consultants from state agencies or universities work with employersto identify workplace hazards, provide advice for compliance with OSHA standards, and assist inestablishing and improving safety and health programs.Primarily targeted for smaller businesses, employers can find out about potential hazards at their workplace, improve pro-grams already in place, and even qualify for a one-year exemption from routine OSHA inspections. The consultation is confidential and will not be reported routinely to the OSHA inspection staff. No citations or penaltieswill be issued and your only obligation is to correct any serious job safety and health hazards - a commitment you are expectedto make prior to the actual visit and carry out in a timely manner. The service is delivered by state governments using a well-trained professional staff. Most consultations take place on-site; limited services are available away from the worksite. The on-site consultant will start withan opening conference before beginningthe walk-through. Together, you and theconsultant will examine conditions inyour workplace. They will study theentire workplace or the specific opera-tions you designate, and discuss the appli-cable OSHA standards. Consultantsmay point out other safety or healthrisks that might not be cited underOSHA standards, but neverthelesscould pose safety or health risks toemployees. They may suggest andeven provide other measures, such asself-inspection or safety and healthtraining you and your employees canuse to prevent future hazardous situa-tions.You will learn not only what youneed to improve, but also what you aredoing right. At that time, you can dis-cuss problems, possible solutions, andabatement periods to eliminate or con-trol any serious hazards identified dur-ing the walk-through. You will receive awritten report summarizing the findingsand OSHA will assist you in developingor maintaining effective safety andhealth programs. Remember, the consultation pro-gram is separate from the inspectioneffort. For more information, visit:osha.gov/consultation7WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®DECEMBER 2019. . . WireGeoconsultants, Inc.EpilogueWhen invited to write a column about experiences in the field over many decades which might be ofinterest to readers of WWDRWWDR, I thought possibly I might be able to write several episodes for a columncalled “Tales from the Field”, but that the memory of this old guy might run out in such an assignmentafter a period of several months. However, here we are still writing a monthly column almost three years later! Nonetheless, time seems to be catching up with the spinner of these “Tales” and he finds he needs to take a break or pause in writing, caused by the intrusion of life’s other activities, including work, all which seem to be occurring at an ever accelerating pace, itseems, during the past several months. This does not allow enough time to think about past episodes in the field and let thempercolate through his brain for a while, much less write an interesting story about them.I have enjoyed reminiscing and writing these “Tales” and hope you have liked reading them as a break between perusingother regular features and the advertisements for such items as drill bits, drill collars, casing, etc. - all necessities for the drillingprofessional. To you readers, and the very special staff at WWDRWWDRwho keep this publication going, until the time I might returnto these pages, I wish all of you good luck, good health, and as the saying goes, “Keep turning to the right.”Publisher’s Note: The WWDRWWDRTeam looks forward to Jeremy’s return, and thanks him for helping us serve the drilling in-dustry with his knowledge and enjoyable “Tales”.JeremyJeremy Wire may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.comGEO

OperatingBlastholeDrills from 5000Miles AwayAdapted fromInformation by EpirocAbout two years ago, Epiroc con-ducted a revolutionary demonstration ofits cabless Pit Viper being operated inGarland, Texas, and controlled more than5000 miles away by people in Stockholm,Sweden. The demonstration revealed theteleremoteand autonomous capabilitiesof the Pit Viper being used in minesaround the world. During the event, participants tookturns operating the rig and commandingit to run in fully autonomous mode, whilethey monitored the rig’s progress andactivities, just as a remote supervisorwould, with Epiroc’s Rig Control System and communication interface. Operators in Stockholm weren’t sure if there would bea lag in the rig’s reaction to their control inputs. However, the rig’s responses were nearly instantaneous using a traditionalground-based fiber-optic network. The first step for teleremote operation was to enhance safety by removingdrill operators from the rig. Soon, the technology was expanded to increaseproductivity. Although this rig is being used in several mines around the world, some wondered just how the Pit Viper’s teleremote capabilities would stand upto overseas teleremote control. It operated flawlessly. This test involved more than just starting the rig and driving it around aparking lot. It really put the rig through its paces during two full days of 10- to12-hour shifts including autonomous drilling and monitoring drilling operationsjust as mines are doing in real-world operations. Operating this state-of-the-art equipment requires thorough training and forthat, Epiroc uses its Surface Automation Centerin Garland to host Automation Boot Camps. When product managers and productspecialists attend Epiroc’s Automation Boot Camp, they are educated in every phase of the process using the same equip-ment they will use on the job. The campis held several times a year at the facili-ty, which features a special classroomand full-scale automated drilling rig.Attendees are able to control the rig withno noise, fumes, dust, or vibration. Manyare surprised how the joysticks on thecompact control pad replicate those on amanually-controlled rig, which simplifiesretraining. The operator watches the drillon a personal console screen and cansupervise up to nine drills at once.Teleremote and autonomous drillingfrom large distances is no longer a futur-istic thought, it’s available now. It is anefficient solution to increased productionand operator safety.Empire State Water Well Drillers Association Annual MeetingJanuary 14-15, 2020For more information, visit us online:www.nywelldriller.orgJanuary 14th9 am - 4:30 pmBoard Meeting, Variety of Classes (TBD)4:30 - 7:30 pmCocktail Party & Trade ShowJanuary 15th9 am - noonGeneral Membership MeetingTurning Stone Resort CasinoVerona, NYFor Hotel Reservations: 800-771-7711www.turningstone.com14DECEMBER 2019WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®EXB

At one time, shallow water oilproduction in the Outer Continental Shelf was booming with more than7000 platforms in the Gulf region. Since November 2000, shallow wateroil production has declined 75%, with less than 2000 of the platformsremaining and most of them producing fewer than 300 barrels of oilequivalent each day. Although overall production in the Gulf of Mexico has continued torise, most of the production is coming from deeper waters further off-shore, causing shallow water producers to struggle. The decline has im-pacted not only producers, but also operators, contractors, and oilfieldservice companies that support drilling.Senator Cassidy wrote a letter to Interior Secretary Bernhardt stat-ing royalty relief is needed to help shallow water operators stay in busi-ness. The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (43 USC 1337) grants thesecretary the authority to set royalty rates. “Increased shallow waterdrilling increases production, which increases federal royalty payments, and creates more American and Louisiana jobs,” said Dr. Cassidy. “This begins by making a better business case for drilling.”Providing royalty relief for existing shallow water operators will encourage business activity in the Gulf. It will provide therevenue operators need to open new wells, invest in more workers, and implement new technologies to update aging wellsand infrastructure. The country’s energy resources in the Gulf of Mexico are essential to meeting our growing energy demands.“The United States should be energy dominant. Shallow water producers can play a critical role in achieving energy independ-ence,” said Dr. Cassidy.Shallow water oil drilling is less risky than its deeper coun-terparts. One of the big differences is the blowout preventeris above water, making it easier to maintain and inspect.Photo courtesy of the Institute for Energy Research.G&O

Current travel along CoastalHighway Route E39 takes 21 hours and demands seven ferry crossings. About a thirdof Norway’s 5.3 million people live along this important travel/trade route, where 60%of the country’s exports are produced. When E39 exits Norway, it continues to Denmark,a vital entry point to Europe. Now, using new tunnel building techniques to cut traveltime to 11 hours, Norway has embarked on the largest infrastructure project in its modernhistory, set to open in 2026. The official name of the subsea road tunnel is E39 Rogfast, and each of the two tunnel tubes willcarry two traffic lanes. As the world’s longest and deepest subsea road tunnel,it will stretch over 16 miles and lie more than1200 feet below sea level at itsdeepest. Two supporting tunnels, each over one mile, will serve as ventilationshafts. In addition, every 820 feetwill be emergency passagesconnecting the two main tunnels.Building tunnels at suchdepths presents challenges. Theprework of constructing a tunnelmay sound simple; however, thesubsea environment involves risks and requires precision work. Blasting foremanArne Oddvar Haugeland, in the industry for nearly 50 years, conducts and performsthe detonations on the subsea site in the Rogfast project. With only torches andheadlamps, this is challenging, considering the large volume of explosives involved.Days consist of blasting, loading, and dumping. With slides as a constant risk, safety is key, so they work in shifts with three-man teams to master the machines and the dark environment. When complet-ed, this tunnel will make life easier by speeding things up along Norway’s west coast.Norway Coastal Highway Route E39Working in the dark requires teamwork.EXBBlasting Foreman Arne Oddvar Haugeland
Some Don’t Want Solutionsby Britt StorksonOwner, P2FlowLLCI’m constantly amazed at how many openly extol the virtuesof innovation and simplicity, but when it comes to putting theseprinciples into practice, they are nowhere to be found. I’vebeen called a “genius,” but those who give me this title don’taccept my recommendations. If they don’t value my opinions, why do they ask in the first place? An article from the Ontonix QCM Blog dated July 12, 2019, titled “Which 21-stCentury Technology is the Most Dangerous?”, I believe describes this phenome-non. QCM means “Quantitative Complexity Management” and is a metric to meas-ure the level of complexity of a project or process. The QCM consultants contend that if complexity is not countered, controlled,or otherwise managed, we will soon be living in a world running on autopilot withoutanyone knowing how it works or how to fix it when it doesn’t work. It is an aptdescription of many of the computer control systems we currently have “serving”us. I put the word “serving” in quotation marks because often it seems like we’reserving the computer, and the computer is not serving us very well. Many organizations and individuals want high complexity because it allowsthem to hide incompetence, mediocrity, fraud, and inefficiencies, as well as avoidresponsibility and prevent innovation. Overcomplexity also allows management tokill good ideas and keep outstanding individuals from excelling. These consultants measure and quantify complexity. Why do we measurethings? One of the reasons is so we can make objective decisions regarding theirperformance and practicality - objective decisions that reflect reality . . . not how we“feel” about something. Some people are threatened by this.I’ve always wondered about big companies that lay off thousands of employ-ees and still maintain the same level of service. It begs the question: Why werethese employees there in the first place? Probably because management did notlogically consider whether they really needed this or that employee. So laying offthis or that employee did positively impact the bottom line, but didn’t negatively affect service. This same concept also applies to computer controls systems. Did anyone consider if we really needed this or that com-puter or system? Do we have empirical (verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic) data to sup-port the purchase of this computer or system?Sometimes satisfactory automation just isn’t possible. Often, companies have employees specifically assigned to monitor certainequipment, and if the employee isn’t there to do it, the equipment is off. I know farmers who could purchase many productsto monitor their farm equipment, but don’t. Why? Because they figure their employees are around observing this equipmentmost of the time and would be capableof either quickly fixing the problem orfinding someone who could. The bottom line is automation, whenproperly applied, is a proven time, money, and equipment saver. When automation ismisapplied - meaning used where it shouldnot be used or is unsuited for the givenapplication - it is a major waste of time andmoney and can even create hazards thatwould not exist without the automation. The wise controls systems purchaserwill do the research and know what canand cannot be done with automation, and what to expect in the way of mone-tary return should the control system beimplemented. Are your sales results not living up to your expectations?by Tim ConnorThere are many reasons why sales effort, a lot of time, allocation of many resources, planning, andso much more can still lead to slow or poor sales results. Having been observing and teaching salesstrategies and practices around the world for over 35 years and witnessing numerous stupid, as well asgenius, tactics used by individuals and organizations, I believe there are five basic reasons why salesdecline or slump regardless of the economy, industry, consumer desires, and competitive philosophies, etc. Many sales trainers and experts might suggest it’s just poor execution of “Sales 101” - prospectingskills, poor presentation skills, or the inability to effectively disarm objections and close the sale. Althoughall of these traditional sales methodologies are important, I believe even if you have all of these and lack the following five, you will never achieve sustained, increased sales results and income. I’ll keep this simple. Here are the five reasons:jA lack of consistent execution of a proven process. To achieve sustained and lasting success, a process is required. If one minute you are selling this way, and the next minute you are selling differently - I will guarantee you will get inconsistentresults. Let me give you a quick example.Let’s say you have a prospect who needs and wants your product or service, and you have been trained to sell it a certainway, but because this person seems moreavailable or affinitive to you, you decideto adjust your approach and get friendlierthan normal - open or whatever. As aresult, you create a different sales envi-ronment deviating from your standardapproach - one you are unfamiliar withand one the prospect may feel is a bitforward. You have abandoned yourprocess. Now don’t get me wrong, I’mnot saying you shouldn’t tailor your salesmessage to the style or interests of eachprospect, what I’m saying is, if and whenyou abandon proven sales techniques, strategies, and approaches for somethingnew or different, you will get less thanhistorical proven positive outcomes. I’m not implying any or all processesare successful, the best approach, or anyprocess should not be open to change, improvement, and updating. RadioactiveWastes - ThePublic RemainsSkeptical, Part OneAdapted fromWorld Nuclear AssociationIn the January 2018, issue of WWDRWWDR,America’s Planned Nuclear WasteRepositoryhighlighted part of the UnitedStates’ plan for containment and storageof nuclear waste deep underground. Tomake this possible, the drilling industrywas engaged in 1994, to drill and blast astarter tunnel. The custom-built tunnelboring machine (TBM) created a five-mile-long horseshoe-shaped exploratorytunnel, and a smaller TBM bored a two-mile-long diagonal tunnel to test the rock.Unfortunately, due to lack of governmentfunding, the promising nuclear waste stor-ageproject was suspended indefinitely. Many remain skeptical this repository, when completed, and others will keep nuclear waste contained. Necessarily, the publicmust know the true nature of hazardous nuclear waste and the measures implemented to ensure its safe, reliable storage. One misconception is the nuclear industry doesn’t have a nuclear waste solution. But technologies for the final disposal of nuclear waste have been implemented, and scientific consensus determined HLW has been contained successfully.Another concern is the risk to people and environment during nuclear wastetransport. To allay these fears, robust 125-ton Type B 9¾-inch thick steel wastecasks are designed to shield from radiation and guarantee containment. A relatedcon-cern, is plutonium is the most toxic substance on earth. However, plutonium, inequal amounts as other toxins, such as ricin, snake venoms, cyanide, and caffeine, has fewer immediate effects, but might pose a risk if inhaled, unlikely because oftransport safety measures. Even if nuclear waste is contained, many think it may be hazardous for futuregenerations. Nuclear waste naturally decays with a finite radiotoxic lifetime, usuallywithin 1000 to 10,000 years. By comparison, other industrial wastes remain hazardousindefinitely. International conventions andnational regulations have set guidelines fortransport and long-term storage. Reposi-tories, the product of collaboration amongradiation scientists, geologists, and engi-neers, are designed to contain HLW indef-initely well below the biosphere, evenduring severe earthquakes.Look for more next month. 21WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®DECEMBER 2019ElevatorsSkyrex Center Latch ElevatorsPVC and Heavy-Duty ElevatorsDrill PipeDrill CollarsManual TongsSpidersCrossover SubsRC SwivelsStabilizersBitsEtc.Family Owned & Operatedofficefax806-791-3731806-791-3755We SupportOur Troops!www.rexmcfadden.comOffered with or without a baseSkyRexWater Well EquipmentEquipmentU.S. Nuclear Waste LocationsNuclear waste transporationcasksENV
Environmental Monitoringby Thomas Kwader, Ph.D., P.G.WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®HydrogeologistProtect the Wellhead!Sometimes we forget what we put on the ground can end up in our drinking water. Before we commencedrilling a new well, it would be advisable to learn the history or land use of the proposed well site.1) What is the history of the site? Is it native, unused, or developed?2) Does the land have a residential history or agricultural usage?3) Are there any prior uses of concern (i.e., gas stations, dry cleaners, manufacturing facility; or is there a possibility of buriedgarbage, etc.?)A new well can be a huge investment. It may be advisable to drill a test hole and sample the water at the uppermost water tableencountered. Chemical analysis of the water sample can be relatively expensive, but so can completing a well that cannot be used. If agroundwater sample can be obtained, it may be worthwhile to have a chemical analysis performed for indicators of contamination -particularly hydrocarbons, nitrates, coliform bacteria, and iron, as well as other parameters specifically related to prior known usage(s)of the property. Keep in mind what types ofactivities are believed to be uphill from thesite, such as agriculture, septic tanks, land-fills, and abandoned businesses. A sampleof the shallow water prior to investing in aproducing well may be “well” worthwhile.Another factor regarding the protec-tion of a good groundwater supply is thepresence of low or impermeable claysoverlying the target aquifer. A few layers ofdense clay can help protect the aquiferfrom surface contamination if the clays aresufficiently thick and extensive in the area.A true short story: I was once requiredto have an annual pulmonary test to assuremy lung capacity was not declining. MyPulmonologist was constantly complainingabout water at his home “tasting funny”. Ilearned he was on a private well and it hadnever been tested. A sample was obtainedand run by our city water quality lab and itshowed TCE (trichloroethylene), a knownhuman carcinogen, at over twice the max-imum contaminant level. The city provideda new water line; and the contaminationwas found to be from a tanker truck wash-ing facility about half a mile away.Tommichele@worldwidedrillingresource.com22DECEMBER 2019WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®The WWDR WWDR camera found Nathan and Jeremy with T & T Carbide, Inc. at the2019 International Construction & Utility Equipment Expo in Louisville, Kentucky.Serving the construction, gas and oil, geothermal, horizontal directional, mining, and water well drilling industries, the company offers:Hole OpenersTricone BitsPDC BitsFly CuttersBarrel ReamersSub AdaptersThey also specialize in custom-built hole openers and back reamers from 8 to60 inches.T & T Carbide, Inc. is a Valued WWDRWWDRAdvertiser.ENV
Notes from the Groundwater Guyby Thomas E. Ballard, P.G., C.H.G.Southeast Hydrogeology, PLLCCommon Causes of Well Failure - Premature AgingIn a time when we are asking our wells to perform far past their design life spans, well design and con-struction decisions, as well as maintenance issues, can impact the life and health of the well. Poor decisionsin these areas can certainly result in wells aging much faster than expected, and all kinds of unexpected prob-lems. Well design and maintenance issues can have a huge impact on the life span and operating costs of the well over time. Not properly rehabilitating a well, for instance, can result in microbiological issues such as sulfur-reducing bacteria, which canproduce hydrogen sulfide gas, resulting in corrosion of the casing and screens, and potential premature failure. We often see, as a cost-saving measure in new wells, construction which incorporates a lower grade steel casing and a stain-less steel screen. While this may initially seem like a good practice to reduce the construction costs of a new well, in actuality, thepresence of dissimilar metals in contact with each other produces an electrochemical galvanic corrosion circuit resulting in acceler-ated corrosion of the lower grade steel which manifests itself as pitting and eventual holing of the casing, requiring expensive repairsand, eventually, well failure. At a minimum, where dissimilar metals are used in a well, a dielectric coupling should be used to jointhem together to reduce corrosion. The best approach is to use all the same metals, preferably stainless steel in a corrosive envi-ronment.How do you know if you have a corrosive environment? The most scientific way is to run a Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) onthe well water. The LSI can distinguish between corrosive water and those likely to produce mineral incrustations, so it should reallybe standard practice in new well construction to help guide design and construction. An easier and more practical method is the nailtest, where a common steel nail is submerged in a sample of the groundwater from the well and observations are made on how longthe nail takes to rust to determine how corrosive the well water is. A nail that starts to rust within hours shows the groundwater isvery corrosive, while a nail that goes a week and barely shows a pinkish tint in the water is in a much less corrosive environment.Of course, the LSI is the more quantitative approach, where the nail test is a bit more subjective. Still, they can both point you in theright direction on terms of well design considerations.TomTom Ballard may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com23WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®DECEMBER 2019WTR

approach, they achieve fewer positive responses. When sales activity is not foreshadowedwith some market exposure or not supported by follow-up activity, you are relying only onthe sales effort. To get better and more consistent positive results from any sales actions, itis a wise move to have both pre- and post-sales activity reinforcing the basic fundamental sales message and customer benefits. jPoor product/service messaging.Have you ever watched a product or service commercial and when it was finished, you wereshaking your head thinking, “What was that all about?” I have, almost every day. I’m not sure how some of these ads make it past man-agement, but someone needs to wake them up - they are stupid and don’t do the product or service justice. No, I’m not going to be specific.I just want to point out, if your messaging is confusing, contradictory, or can be perceived or interpreted as negative or derogatory in anyway, it will not contribute to your sales success.jOveruse or underuse of specific communication techniques.Technology wants us to believe the only way to sell to people today is withsocial media, e-mails, or the latest techno whiz. Yes, these are important and can often be an integral part of lifestyle today, but let me assure you“word of mouth” has not lost its impact on the buying public or process. When the average customer has a negative product or service experience, researchtells us they will, on average, tell nine people. And those nine people on average will tell five people, and this process continues on. So let me askyou, how many people over time do you think will get the negative message, and how much money do you need to spend on promotion and advertisingto counteract this negative exposure? Just ask any organization that has lost customers, market share, and even gone belly-up due to negative pressand, in hindsight, they admit they failed to anticipate the negative consequences due to this negative experience. If you think you are going to hit ahome run every time with a campaign of a new product or service relying only on your investment in technology exposure, you are living in “FantasyLand”. I can hear some of you now, “No, Tim. You are living in “Denial Land” and just don’t get how people are buying today.” Okay, youare not listening. I didn’t say you didn’t need to use these media sources to improve sales, I said you need to not rely ONLY on them.jA lack of execution integrity.Talk is cheap today. People seem to throw commitments, promises, and so many other things at cus-tomers, clients, friends, and even family members that in some ways they hope will happen, but are never 100% sure will. Ever left a mes-sage for a supplier who said they would get back to you in 24 hours, then after a week, you still hadn’t heard from them? Ever have someonetell you they will see you for lunch, a meeting, coffee at a certain time, and 20 minutes later they finally showed up? I could give you thou-sands of examples. The common thread in all of them is a lack of integrity. There are far too many reasons and contributors to this issuein today’s sales (and general relationship) environment, so let me cover one simple concept. Does this lack of consistency, integrity, or com-mitment - in your opinion - contribute to poor customer loyalty, poor customer relations, poor repeat business, poor references and/or refer-rals, poor word of mouth, and just a poor reputation in general? If you want to avoid any of these “poor” issues (outcomes, results, consequences), it’s simple. I know there are many more, but here are just five things to consider:1. Start meaning what you say and saying what you mean.2. Stop making excuses and just do it.3. If you can’t do it, or are not sure whether it will happen, don’t promise it.4. If circumstances beyond your control cause a promise or commitment to not be delivered, fix it quickly.5. Learn from your communication mistakes.Stop repeating the same stupid behaviors that are doing nothing to improve your image and sales results, whether as an individual or an organization! In His service, Tim Tim Connor may becontacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com26DECEMBER 2019WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Connorcont’dfrompage19.

DrillingInto Money Not Boringby Mark E.BattersbyMore Records: Key to Growthand ProfitsOwners and managers know goodrecords are invaluable for monitoring theprogress of the drilling operation or busi-ness, when preparing financial statementsrequired by lenders and investors, reward-ing when trying to sell the business, andparticularly helpful when seeking financ-ing. But it’s not all.In reality, most drilling contractorsneglect the recordkeeping aspect of theiroperation either because of a lack of time,or uncertainty about what is required andwhich records may be important. However, having a clearly defined document retention policy has several benefits: efficiency, safety, and peace of mind.Accurate recordkeeping is essential to many aspects of a successful drilling operation - from assessing the operation’sprofit margins to ensuring compliance with the ever-increasing number of state and federal rules. After all, there are numerouslaws and regulations, including employment tax laws - such as the Fair Labor Standards Act (FSLA), the Health InsurancePortability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), Employee Retirement and Income Security Act (ERISA), as well as mandates bythe Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). And, don’t forget the many state and local document retentionrequirements along with those increasingly more complex sales tax records.Among the records it’s a good idea to keep are:jHiring records for at least a year.jPayroll records for three years. However, with employeesable to file lawsuits for unpaid back pay or overtime, a five-yearretention period might be best.jI-9 Forms, required to show an employee is eligible to workin the U.S. should, by law, be kept for three years after hiringor one year after terminating a worker.jSeparation paperwork for five years after termination.jFamily Medical Leave Act reports for three years after ter-mination.jRetirement benefits forms for six years.jDrug test records for five years.jEmployee health and safety records for five years.jOSHA requires records of any workplace employee injuriesand illnesses obtained in the workplace, be kept and retained.jUnemployment insurance information for up to seven years.jContracts for up to five years.Records and recordkeeping can take a variety of formsand shapes. Remember however, records are not only aboutmaking the Internal Revenue Service happy, they also playan important role in managing the drilling operation or business. To avoid identity theft and protect sensitive business information, all business records should be disposed of properly or shredded.Mark Mark Battersby may be contacted via e-mail tomichele@ worldwidedrillingresource.comServing as an Advocate and Resource for theGroundwater IndustrySince 1992To register call Josh McClintock: (405) 258-8747or go online: www.okgroundwater.orgDon't miss the only conference dedicated to Oklahoma'sgroundwater industry.Join over 200 water well drillers, pump installers, manufacturersand suppliers, technical and groundwater professionalsfrom across Oklahoma and beyond.Continuing Education OpportunitiesAccess to Exhibitor HallLunch Buffet with Trade ShowEvening ReceptionNetworking OpportunitiesJanuary 7 & 8, 2020Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference CenterNorman, OK2020 OGWA Conference and Trade Show28DECEMBER 2019WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Open the Doorway to all the Event Photos duringCalifornia Groundwater Association 2019To see all the photos from this event,go to www.worldwidedrillingresource.comFeel free to download at will and print the photo(s) of your choice.Compliments ofWorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®.Photos are copyrighted and released for personal use only - no commercial use permitted.

Oil/Water Explorationby Harold WhiteI have written a lot, and to some it is unbelievable or at least seems so. I imagine if people knewwhat I do works and is a scientific fact that I can find rivers and creeks of all the fluids (water, hot water, steam, salt water, gas), I would be a busy boy. I have made a science out of all this I write about. The flats, or Salt Lake area, or oceans . . . there are a lot of places that look good being salty, buta lot of things cannot live on salt water. The salt creeks have been carrying salt water to the ocean for an unknown amount of years, and itis still going on - and we are trying to drill freshwater wells. Saltwater creeks in some areas are self-sealed and self-contained.If you drill through one, then case and seal, and drill on down, that salt creek may just be travelling through. There may be alot of salty layers the fresh water will pick up on the way up, making the fresh salty. If the total dissolved solids test changesfor the better, it may indicate fresh water. Now on to a question . . . Whobelieves in global warming? Well, thereis a difference between believing andknowing. I think we all believe in it. It iswritten on the face of the earth, accord-ing to scientific studies and pictures, and the migration of the people and liv-ing things that were alive in that timeperiod. As the ice receded to the Northand South Poles, it was followed by theanimals, including people and other liv-ing things, all leaving signs of the migra-tion. Apparently, we are still in this lastice age. A similar thing happened to me in Wyoming, close to the Wind River IndianReservation. It was about 10 p.m. at night driving back to town. A large owl wasflyingalongside the pickup at the same level as the passenger side window. This continuedforabout ¼-mile as I slowed down and kept pace with it. Then it flew in front of the pickupand stood in the middle of the road. It just stood there, proud and defiant, staring medown. We stared at each other for about three to five minutes, then it flew off.Since I was close to the Indian Reservation, I immediately thought it must be the sprit of an old Indian chief guarding his territoryfrom intruders. Blinking the lights off and on didn't scare it a bit; it just stood there staring at me. This behavior puzzled me. In hindsight,I believe it was flying alongside looking for mice that would be frightened by the pickup, and it could pick up an easy meal. Standing inthe middle of the road was its way of telling me to turn around and try this stretch of road again to see if I could scare up any mice.It was a puzzling experience. Interesting to hear of your similar experience.Tom CryanCryan & AssociatesLakewood, ColoradoReader’sResponse

Are California’s Wildfires Contaminating Water?Compiled by Bonnie Love, Editor, WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®California is no stranger to wildfires; in fact, the state averages more than 5000 wildfires every year. Over the past twoyears, officials have discovered something unexpected - benzene contamination in the water. It all started in 2017, when the City of Santa Rosa Water division received a complaint of foul tasting water about a monthafter the Tubbs wildfire burned through the city. A staff member took water samples and found contaminants, including ben-zene, a volatile organic compound (VOC) the area had never tested positive for, at unacceptable levels. The subsequent investigation revealed a potential source of the contamination could be the HDPE (high-density polyethylene)and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipes used throughout the water system. Hightemperatures from the fire, up to 1500ºF (815ºC), could cause thermal degradation(pyrolysis) of the plastic pipes. Other circumstances which potentially contributedto the problem include a loss of water pressure caused by the sudden increaseddemand for water. The theory is when the system lost water pressure, it createda vacuum effect which pulled contaminants, including hot air, ash, and char, intothe service lines and distribution main lines. It is believed, some of these VOCcontaminants soaked into the walls of the pipes, gaskets, and other componentsof the water distribution system. However, not everyone agrees.Tony Radoszewski, president of the Plastics Pipe Institute believes there wereseveral other sources which could have contaminated the distribution lines. The fireburned a lot of organic compoundssuch as wooden housing frames;asphalt shingles; appliances; auto-mobiles with batteries, oil, operatingfluids, and tires; asphalt drivewaysand roads; all containing tons ofhydrocarbons, he explained. The Carr wildfire in the summerof 2018 burned nearly 230,000 acres, killed 8 people, and destroyed over 1600structures. After the fire was put out, tests were run on the water supplies andno benzene was discovered. However, in October of 2018, the Paradise community of about 27,000resi-dents, experienced the state’s deadliest, most destructive wildfire - the CampFire. The massive fire killed 85 people, destroyed 14,000 homes, and left acharred mess the size of Chicago, behind. Once extinguished, the ParadiseIrrigation District and the State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water began testing the area’s tap waterand found staggering levels of benzene. The state limits of benzene are set at below 1 ppb (parts per billion),the federal stan-dard is 5 ppb; initial testing detected benzene levels averaging 27 ppb, with some levels as high as 923 ppb.The good news, testing confirmed the area’s groundwater has not been affected by the contamination. The bad news, scientists, engineers, and public healthofficials still haven’t found any conclu-sive evidence as to the source of thecontamination. More research is neededto determine what is causing high ben-zene readings after wildfires, and whatmeasures need to be taken to prevent itfrom becoming a regular occurrence.Gina Solomon, a clinical professorin the Division of Occupational andEnvironmental Medicine at the Universityof California, San Francisco, will be look-ingfor answers through a study fundedby a National Institute of EnvironmentalHealth Sciences grant. The study will startwith testing the tap water of standinghomes in the burn area for 32 chemicals. If elevated levels of contamination aredetected, carbon filters capable of remov-ing benzene will be installed. The carbonfilters will then be analyzed in a lab.Contact Information: Dean RobbinsPhone: (512) 472-7437 • Fax: (512) 472-0537E-mail: drobbins@twca.orgwww.tgwa.orgTGWA Annual Convention & Trade ShowJanuary 22-24, 2020Embassy Suites by Hilton Dallas Frisco Hotel Convention Center & Spa Frisco, TXTrade Show, Latest Industry Technologies, Policy/RuleUpdates, Education Classes for Water Well Drillers andPump Installers, Live Scholarship Auction, and top thefun off with everyone at the Topgolf Outing Thursday night! To develop, promote, and protect Texasgroundwater.NEWLOCATION!33WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®DECEMBER 2019WTRThe inside of a section of a water main fromthe Santa Rosa fire, you can see dark sootymaterial indicating smoke, ash, and soot fromthe fire traveled in the water mains.Photos courtesy of the City of Santa Rosa.
The “Idiots” Cornerby “Billy Bob Smith”I know the above is a stupid quote, but I couldn’t resist it considering the following. Think about it.Before long, we will never have to leave our houses or apartments to buy anything or get any personalservices. And I’m not talking about the local heating and air conditioning guy, plumber, or AAA comingto your house to fix stuff. Don’t believe me?You can now have the following delivered to your homes (just to mention a very few things):food/meals, groceries, medications, pet food, mail, clothes, furniture, new or used car.And also, you can get the following services at your home: haircuts, work from home, manicures and pedicures, exerciseroutines, massages, coaching/counselling services. You can even get medical advice, tests, and treatments without leavingyour kitchen. What’s your point Billy Bob - what’s wrong with home delivery stuff? Think about it - before long, you may even be able toget: your personal funeral services . . . your minister delivering communion . . . your doctor performing surgeries . . . your eyeexams, blood tests, and court proceedings for any number of situations - at home.So before you know it, we will never have to leave our houses for any reason. We will be living like aliens in a strange newworld without nurturing human relationships, new friendships, new experiences, and new and exciting things to try and do. Forsome people, I’m sure this sounds exciting and even positive. For me, well, it’s just stupid to think we can get and do everythingwe will ever need without taking off our pajamas. There is something good about standing in line to check out at a store. There is something positive about interacting withother people while shopping. Now, if it’s just about getting the stuff or saving time, I get it; but consider for a minute - where isthe fun in never leaving home? Unless you’re a TV junkie, then you can finally spend all day on the couch and get everythingyou need. Trust me - if that’s your lifestyle - you will sooner or later need the emergency medical services of an ambulance atyour house!Have a wonderful holiday season and enjoy all the drones flying over your house.Billy BobContact him via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com34DECEMBER 2019WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®“If it can’t be delivered to my home by youtoday - I will buy it from someone else, even ifI have to pay more. ~Billy Bob

49WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®DECEMBER 2019Through the Back Door!by Jim KuebelbeckSigned into law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862, the Homestead Act encouraged Westernmigration by providing settlers 160 acres of public land. In exchange, homesteaders paid a small filing fee andwere required to complete five years of continuous residence before receiving ownership of the land.As with most laws enacted, there are often unintended consequences. Many land speculators at the time, hoping to make future profits on the sale of such land, purchased “dummy” ownership of many thousands ofacres of government land. Many circumvented the intended requirements for ownership of the land by making“small” improvements on the land (such as cutting down a few small trees for a supposed future farming effort). To more easily justifytheir supposed intent to establish a homestead on such land, most land speculators selected sites along rivers and streams. Truepioneers and settlers were sometimes left with no option but to file homestead claims far away from easily accessible water sources.Building makeshift structures or log cabins on those sites was a first priority, but the acquisition of a nearby water supply wasthe second most important necessity. Wells dug down to shallow surface water tables were the norm at the time, and with the min-imal needs of the early settlers, these shallow wells proved to be quite adequate. The digging of these wells, however, often con-sumed weeks or months of hard labor, and all too often those efforts proved futile when no shallow water was encountered. In an effort to avoid such wasted time and effort, the early settlers often relied on the advice of someone who could apparentlypredict the presence of underground water sources far more often than “the laws of chance and average” would allow. (How someof these early, and present-day, water finders were, and are, able to sense underground water sources remains somewhat of anunexplainable human faculty to this day.)Government surveyors and geologists at the time referred to these water finders as delusional and superstitious. (How could it be someignorant, illiterate homesteader could locate a groundwater source at a rate better than the “more conventional” methods used by“professional” people?) Rather than making an effort to discover how this might be possible, it was far easier to simply refer to these earlywater finders as “water witches”. The infamous Salem, Massachusetts Witch Trials of 1692 were still present in the psyche of many peopleat the time, and the term “water witching” soon became synonymous in the minds of many people as a reference to the “occult”.My belief is our Creator envisioned a time in the future when mankind will have learned to use and protect our precious ground-water sources, and in His wisdom continues to endow certain individuals with the ability to locate these precious underground watersources for future generations. DrillingCompleted forGeothermalPlant in the UKAdapted from Information byUnited Downs Deep GeothermalPower and Oroco UtilitiesDrilling to establish the first deep geo-thermal electricity plant in the UnitedKingdom (UK) has been successfully com-pleted at United Downs Industrial Park inRedruth, Cornwall. Geothermal EngineeringLimited (GEL) was contracted to drill thedeepest well on UK soil at around 16,700feet.The well also proved to be the hottest, with temperatures of approximately 383ºF(195ºC), with initial flow tests suggesting theproject is capable of producing the UK’s firstgeothermal electricity. To establish the United Downs power plant, two deep geothermal wells have been drilled into the hot granite rocks beneath the site. The wells are directional (j-shaped) to intercept a target geological structure (thePorthtowan Fault). The natural structure enables water to be circulated through the hotrock from the injection well to the production well in a continuous cycle. As the watermoves through the rocks, it picks up heatwhich is extracted and converted to elec-tricity at the surface. The project was established by GELto demonstrate the potential of the deepgeothermal resource in the UK for pro-ducing carbon-free electricity and heat. The United Downs plant is expected tosupply up to three megawatts of electrici-ty, which is enough energy to power 3000homes. Dr. Ryan Law, managing director ofGeothermal Engineering Ltd said, “We are delighted to have completed the drilling of thesetechnically challenging wells. Reaching our target at the Porthtowan Fault Zone, at such a depth, was a fantastic achievement in geo-logical and engineering terms and the initialflow test are very exciting for unlocking thepotential of the granite in Cornwall.”Now that drilling has finished, the thirdphase of the program, evaluation which isexpected to run until spring of next year, willbegin. The first part will be to remove a tem-porary downhole packer from UD-1 andcarry out more downhole logging measure-ments. Both wells intersected the PorthtowanFault at the predicted depth and downholemeasurements confirmed plenty of naturalfractures, indicating good permeability. However, a series of measurements andhydraulic tests are necessary to evaluatethe fault structure to make sure the wellsare in good condition and evaluate theamount of geothermal energy which canbe harnessed.50DECEMBER 2019WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Information: Joel Waltonjwalton022@aol.com • (225) 744-4554www.lgwa.orgJanuary 9, 2020Paragon Casino - Marksville, LA Tower or Atrium hotel rooms call (800) 642-7777 and refer toLGWA Annual 2020 conference use code LGWA 01GRegistration starts at 7 am, Seminars start at 8 am(Cocktail hour, dinner, and BINGO at 6 pmthe night before the convention [the 8th].)LLoouuiissiiaannaa GGrroouunndd WWaatteerr AAssssoocciiaattiioonnLLoouuiissiiaannaa GGrroouunndd WWaatteerr AAssssoocciiaattiioonnCCoonnvveennttiioonn && TTrraaddee SShhoowwCCoonnvveennttiioonn && TTrraaddee SShhoowwVisitors can get close to the wellheads UD-1 & UD-2and stand over the deepest hole in the United Kingdom.A 24-inch and a 17.5-inch drill bit used on theproject. 51WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®DECEMBER 2019Dispelling the Myths SurroundingHydraulic Fracturing Part 2Adapted from a Policy Brief by The Heartland InstituteMyth #2 - Hydraulic Fracturing Pollutes Our Air- This myth claims air emissions from hydraulic fracturing sites create significantand widespread health problems. However, evidence from shale plays all over the United States proves this is incorrect. In fact, numer-ous studies have been conducted by various agencies and governments including:Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment- The report found levels of air pollution created at active gas and oilgas drilling operations in or near residential areas are too low to pose serious health problems, even when the data was adjustedto account for people who are more sensitive to air pollution, such as those with asthma. The report concluded, “All measured airconcentrations were below short- and long-term safe levels of exposure for noncancer health effects, even for sensitive populations.”University of Texas at Arlington- Analysis revealed air quality surrounding hydraulic fracturing drilling operations in the Eagle FordShale was well within acceptable limits. In 2015, a Modern Geosciences study of the Barnett Shale in the Lone Star State foundnone of the observed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were above state-mandated public health levels. The results supported aprevious study of the Barnett Shale which found “shale gas activities have not resulted in VOC levels that pose a health concern.”Drexel University- Researchers examined the Marcellus region of Pennsylvania, and did not observe elevated levels of any “lightaromatic compounds (benzene, toluene, etc.)” at well sites, and “few emissions of nonalkane VOCs . . . from Marcellus Shale devel-opment.”Utah Division of Air Quality, Region 8 of the Environmental Protection Agency and the UteIndian Tribe- This multiyear study examined the VOC emissions in the Uinta Basin. What they dis-covered is VOC emission levels were much lower than previously estimated. “The emissions inven-tory shows basin-wide emissions of VOCs, thought by scientists to be the main drivers of ozoneformation in the basin, are 49% lower than previous inventory estimates,” a press release noted.“Like in other oil and natural gas basins, the new inventory revealed primary VOCs have lowerpotency for driving ozone. That’s especially important because the oil and natural gas industry isthe largest contributor of VOC emissions in the Uinta Basin. However, this downward revision ofVOC emissions is yet another example of how industry has been able to reduce emissions whilemaintaining strong growth in oil and natural gas production.”United Kingdom Department of Health- The department issued a report concluding “the poten-tial risks to public health from exposure to the emissions associated with shale gas extraction arelow if the operations are properly run and regulated.”The U.S. has revolutionized the country’s gas and oil production through the use of hydraulic fracturing, leading to a substantialincrease in oil production (up 80%), and natural gas production (up 51%) from 2005. The interesting fact is national air pollution has con-tinued to decline over this period of increased production.Myth #3 will tackle concerns about the process causing health problems, next month.DIR
The Un-Comfort Zone IIby Robert Evans Wilson, Jr.Creativity Hates FreedomIn 1960, Publisher Bennett Cerf bet Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel $50 that he could not write a best-selling children’s book using fewer than 100 unique words. Cerf likely figured it was a sucker betbecause three years earlier, Dr. Seuss was asked by William Spaulding, a director at book publisherHoughton Mifflin, to write a compelling children’s book using only 225 distinct words. He was to choosethe words from a standard first grade vocabulary list of 348 words. Geisel failed and ended up using236 to write the best-selling book, The Cat in the Hat. Which, at the time of Cerf’s bet, had already sold one million copies.Dr. Seuss accepted Cerf’s bet and upped the challenge by stating he would write a best-selling children’s book using only50 words. A few months later, he delivered the 62-page, Green Eggs and Hamusing exactly 50 unique words. Those 50words are: a, am, and, anywhere, are, be, boat, box, car, could, dark, do, eat, eggs, fox, goat, good, green, ham, here, house,I, if, in, let, like, may, me, mouse, not, on, or, rain, Sam, say, see, so, thank, that, the, them, there, they, train, tree, try, will, with, would, you. I was surprised to see the word “taste” is not included! The story of Sam-I-am, who tries to get someone to taste his dish of green eggs and ham became an immediate best-seller. It is the fourth highest selling English language children’s book in history, and to date has sold more than eight millioncopies.Dr. Seuss was challenged by a boundary. Boundaries and constraints help stimulate creative thinking. This is where theconcept of “thinking outside the box” comes from. When you find yourself boxed in by constraints, you have to use your prob-lem solving skills to come up with a new solution. Think of the movie Apollo 13when the ground crew had to figure out - ina matter of hours to prevent the astronauts from suffocating - how to fit a square CO2filter into a slot designed for a roundfilter using only items available in the spacecraft.Bennett Cerf put Seuss in a box, then Seuss put himself in an even smaller box. “Would you eat them in a box? Wouldyou eat them with a fox?” A box he had to think his way out of to create a book children would love. When I think of being challenged by a boundary, I often think of some of the physically challenged athletes I’ve seen overthe years - men and women with one leg running marathons and competing in downhill skiing. These are two activities I can-not do, and I have both of my legs. I used to wonder why they were able to do so much more than me, until I realized theywere challenged by a boundary and I wasn’t. Being unable to walk was unacceptableto them, and conquering their disability became a powerful motivating factor. Theyhad to get out of the box!January 28-30, 2020Fort Worth, TXUCTis the business event for everyone involvedin maintaining the underground utility pipe infra-structure. Creativity and innovation abhor toomuch freedom. I like to imagine creativ-ity as a prisoner trying to bust out of jail. When your resources and opportunities are limited, you must become innovative.Think of Clint Eastwood in the true-story movie Escape From Alcatraz, breakingout of prison with a nail clipper. An even better illustration is the World War IImovie The Great Escape. It is an amazing tale of ingenuity. Men with little to workwith escape from a German prisoner of war camp. In addition to digging three tunnelswithout shovels, they made hand-drawn traveling documents and identificationpapers that looked authentic enough to pass for ones made on a printing press. Nowthat was a box to get out of!Without boundaries to challenge us, we wouldn't be as creative. The exceptionto this rule is political constraint - government regulation stifles creativity and shutsinnovation down. We shouldn't have to worry about being arrested (rememberGalileo) just because we have a radical idea. On the other hand, government canstimulate innovation, but what it has to do is . . . as a French economist once said,"Laissez-faire," which is understood as "get out of the way!" More specifically, what the government can do to stimulate innovation is to: reduce taxes, reduceregulation, return to a sound currency (like gold), reform K-12 education, andreform product liability law. In other words, untie the hands of innovators.RobertRobert is an innovation/change speaker, author, and consultant. Nesting Diamond Discovered in RussiaAdapted from Information by ALROSA andthe Gemological Institute of America, Inc.Specialists sorting through rough diamonds at the Nyurba mining and processing divisionof ALROSA in Yakutia, Russia, came across something they’d never seen before; a tinydiamond moving freely inside a larger diamond. The Nyurba Mining and Processing Division was established in 2000, to develop thedeposits of the Nakyn ore field. This includes two open-pit mines working the Nyurbinsky andBotuobinsky kimberlite pipes, as well as a placer deposit.Experts studying the nesting diamond believe thisis the first such diamond in the history of global dia-mond mining. Scientists speculate the diamondcould be more than 800 million years old. Despite itscomplex structure, it weighs only 0.62 carats and theinternal diamond weighs an estimated 0.02 carats.Reminiscent of the traditional nesting RussianMatryoshka doll, it has been dubbed the MatryoshkaDiamond. Specialists of the Yakutsk Diamond TradeEnterprise turned the discovery over to the Researchand Development Geological Enterprise of ALROSAfor analysis. Scientists there studied the unique inclu-sion with Raman and infrared spectroscopies, as wellas X-ray microtomography. Based on the results, scientists theorized how the crystal was formed.According to them, the internal diamond was formedfirst, and the external diamond formed during thelater stages of growth.According to Oleg Kovalchuk, deputy director for innovations at ALROSA's Research and Development GeologicalEnterprise, "The most interesting thing for us, was to find out how the air space between the inner and outer diamonds wasformed. We have two main hypotheses.According to the first version, a mantlemineral captured a diamond during itsgrowth, and later it was dissolved in theearth's surface.According to the second version, alayer of porous polycrystalline diamondsubstance was formed inside the dia-mond because of ultrafast growth, andmore aggressive mantle processessubsequently dissolved it. Due to thepresence of the dissolved zone, onediamond began to move freely insideanother . . . As far as we know, therewere no such diamonds in the history ofglobal diamond mining yet. This is reallya unique creation of nature, especiallysince nature does not like emptiness.Usually, some minerals are replaced byothers without cavity formation."Editor’s Note: In between our print issues, the WWDRWWDRTeam prepares an electronicnewsletter called E-News FlashE-News Flash. by Tim RasmussenWater For Life just finished loading another container for shipment toGuatemala. It is loaded with material to support our work, along with donat-ed medical equipment headed for the Ministry of Health in the Petén region, and for other groups who are working to make a difference in the lives ofthe people in the area. The containers we ship are the lifeblood of our work. We constantlyneed equipment to support our drilling rigs. This means tools, compressors, generators, pallets of bentonite, galvanized pipe, steel well casings, pumps, PVC pipe, stainless steel fittings, nuts and bolts, wrenches, etc. - EVERYTHING is carefully weighed and cataloged. The containers themselves are somewhat special. We use high cube containers, certified as suitable for ocean shipping. The containers arrive and we have two hours to load, or we will be charged for extra time. We have never made it in twohours, but we also have never had to pay extra. The containers are loaded right to the doors. Our crew of volunteers pack them tight, not only to get in as much as wecan, but to pack them so there will be no shifting of the contents. This year, there were 170 boxes of donated hospital linenspacked into every conceivable crevice as the heavier material was placed. These boxes cushion everything against move-ment. I believe you could turn the container upside down and it would pretty much stay the way it is inside. The containers are carried by truck to the Port of Seattle, where they are placed aboard a very large container ship forthe first part of the voyage. This year, the ship is the Conti Courage, an MSC ship. It is a large container ship. The largest ofthese ships can carry up to 18,000 containers onboard. I am able to track the voyage of the ship carrying our precious mate-rial as it makes its way from Seattle to Oakland, to Long Beach, and then to Panama. I enjoy watching where it is daily. Our cost for shipping from Seattle to the east coast of Guatemala is usually about $5000 and takes about 40 days fromport to port. Sometimes the cost is a little more, but usually not less. It does not seem to matter whether the container is afull weight or not. I think an empty one would probably cost as much. After the shipping where the costs and progress are known, comes the mystery of the import process. The container sitsin the port. How long? No one can predict. For the port, the longer the better, because they charge $140 per day. It is usually about a week, so we figure about$1000 for port charges waiting for us to work out the details of the importation. New Way to Capture Stranded Natural GasAdapted from a Press Release by Edge Gathering Virtual Pipelines 2 LLCEdge Gathering Virtual Pipelines 2 LLC specializes indelivering low-cost, high-quality liquefied natural gas (LNG)by converting stranded and flared natural gas. The compa-ny recently produced and delivered its first LNG in theUnited States. To date, more than 30,000 gallons of LNGfrom a Marcellus Shale project in Pennsylvania has beendelivered to a location more than 300 miles away in New England. The system uses a transportable Cryobox™ made by Galileo Global Technologies. Using the LNG production and liq-uefaction equipment at the production site, the company is able to deliver LNG directly to customers without using costlypipelines. The cryobox units fit on a standard 40-foot tractor trailer and is designed to be quickly and easily connected anddisconnected from feedstock gas wells. The units are also self-powered usingproduced gas, eliminating the need fora grid connection. This process allows gas and oilprojects to capture and utilize strandedgas reserves, rather than flaring orventing. For LNG buyers, this opens upa new source of high-quality, low-costLNG which can be delivered anywhere.By utilizing otherwise wasted gas whileavoiding pipeline costs, the company ishoping to become one of the most com-petitive suppliers of truck-deliveredLNG worldwide. The technology, developed andproven in Argentina, is suitable for useanywhere in the world where stranded, flared, or vented gas is an issue. MarkCasaday, CEO of Edge said, “It is esti-mated that stranded wells account forup to 60% of global reserves, and up to20% of those drilled in Marcellus, show-ing the scale of this untapped resource. The virtual pipeline model has alreadybeen deployed in Mendoza, Argentina, where the first LNG-fueled power plantrunning entirely on previously strandedgas is now well established. Now we’rebringing this innovation to the U.S. andthe rest of the world. With Edge, wellowners can monetize these assets forthe first time, and the market benefitsfrom the lowest cost and highest qualityLNG available.”59WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®DECEMBER 2019G&OFebruary IssueDeadlines! A Tale of Two SpillwaysAdapted from Information by Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.In February 2017, heavy rain and rapid snowmelt compromised the main spillway ofCalifornia’s Lake Oroville, leading to the emergency spillway being used for the first time.Nearly 200,000 people were evacuated from the city of Oroville and multiple downstreamcommunities as the hillside began eroding. Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. won the contract to complete an emergency repairand rebuild of the two massive spillways for the California Department of WaterResources (DWR), and they needed to do it in less than 18 months. Portionsof the 3000-foot main spillway had to be repaired and rebuilt in less than 165 days. The team was mobilized to the site of the nation’s tallest dam within a month. More than700 Kiewit employees worked over 1.6 million hours at Oroville, and hundreds of otherregional subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, and DWR employees also worked at the site. All involved were striving togetherto reach a common goal: get both spillways built to final design by November 1, 2018.To prevent uphill erosion, if the emergency spillway ever needed to be used again, crews constructed an emergency spill-way system (ESS) made up of a secant pile wall, splashpad, and buttress. In Phase 1, ESS work focused on thesecant pile wall - a 1450-foot-long under-ground wall built into bedrock at depthsof 35-65 feet. Once crews finished thewall, they could finally place roller-com-pacted concrete (RCC) into the splashpad. To crush the 1.2 million tons of aggre-gate required for the RCC production, theteam processed over 2 million tons of on-site materials. Using one-foot lifts at a time, crews placed 706,000 cubic yards of RCCin a total area so big 25 regulation foot-ball fields could fit within the splashpad. “When Kiewit finished the first phasein November 2017, the compromised 3000-foot main spillway was back in workingcondition,” said Project Director ToddOrbus. “But the project was only 40% com-plete. We had to wait until May of 2018 tostart finishing more than half our scope.”At the start of Phase 2, all the tempo-rary walls constructed along the spillway inPhase 1 had to be demolished. A three-foot layer of structural concrete was placedon top of the 1050-foot RCC middle sectionof the chute, and the temporary walls werereplaced with permanent structural con-crete walls. Additionally, the top 730 feetof the spillway had to be demolished andreplaced with structural concrete and hydroblast, then crews had to resurface the ener-gy dissipaters (or dragon’s teeth as theycalled them) at the base of the spillway. “We entered the winter season know-ing we had a tremendous amount of workto complete in 2018 - nearly double theamount of concrete to place than crewscompleted in 2017,” Orbus said. “But throughextensive planning, execution, diligence, and hard work, we met all of our projectmilestones ahead of schedule. This proj-ect is proof of what can be accomplishedwhen you have the right team focusedon a common goal.”63WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®DECEMBER 2019C&G
