Splat! Goes the Sensorby Britt StorksonOwner, P2FlowLLCPopular Mechanicsmagazine reported sensors used on self-drivingcars can be defeated - meaning rendered inoperable and useless. Whatdefeated these devices? Was it the work of devious hackers? Could mali-cious vandals be the culprit? These sensors were defeated by bugs - common, ordinary bugs that you clean off of your windshield from time to time fromearly spring to late fall when the bugs are active.Ford Motor Company developed an air “shield” which uses several streams of compressed air to divert the bugs awayfrom the sensor. Similar systems use windshield washer fluid to periodically clean off the bugs. As is the case with most every-thing, changes in one area require changes in one or more other areas to ensure reliable operation as each of these solutionscomes with their own set of problems. The air “shield” does not work 100% of the time, and what if the fan supplying the airquits? With a heavy bug load, the windshield washer fluid could be used up very quickly - rendering the sensor useless.Sensors are a critical part of automation. If one or more sensors are not working, or not working properly, unless there issome redundancy built in your system, it won’t be working for long. Sometimes compromised sensors do not quit sendinginformation entirely. The information can be there, but so corrupted the controlling computer does not get the accurate infor-mation it needs to make the right decisions. What is a sensor? A sensor converts a physical stimulus into a voltage. This stimulus may be temperature, pressure, phys-ical position, and chemical - to name just a few of many types of sensors now available. What this output voltage representsis defined by the sensor manufacturer, and there are thousands of different sensors out there with a wide variety of outputconfigurations. This output voltage is routed to a device called an analog-to-digital converter, which extracts a digital “word”the computer can use. Most sensors are “ratiometric”, meaning the output is directly proportional to the input. A simple example of this conceptis a pressure sensor with a voltage output of 0-10 volts with a 0-100 psi full scale range. If you hook it up to a pressure sourceand read (with a voltmeter) 1 volt at the output, it means you have 10 psi at your pressure source; 2 volts would indicate 20psi; 5 volts would indicate 50 psi; and so on.For critical systems, often two or more of the same sensor are used. If one sensor fails or transmits flawed data, the com-puter control can be programmed to ignore it and only accept data from the properly working sensor. A good control systemwill also advise the operator not only that a sensor has failed, but identify which sensor failed so it can be repaired or replaced. How do we determine we have a bad sensor? All sensor outputs operate with a maximum high and low voltage, and oneway to determine if the sensor is working right is to check to see if the sensor output is within the correct voltage range. Anotherway to check for a bad sensor is to note if the sensor output does not change within a certain time frame. This would suggestthe sensor is jammed in place or frozen. This is useful for something like an “angle of attack” sensor which determines theangle of the aircraft fuselage relative to the ground. But what if a critical sensor or multiple sensors do not work and the computer cannot compute? What do we do then?Currently, the conventional wisdom is to disconnect everything and hand the control back to operator, or shut off everythingcompletely so the equipment doesn’t damage anything. But what if the operator isn’t paying attention or isn’t aware the controlsystem isn’t controlling anything anymore? That’s when we should reconsider whetheror not the equipment should be automat-ed to begin with - or automated on a lim-ited basis to aid the operator instead ofreplacing the operator entirely.Automation doesn’t automaticallymake everything better. Incompetent orincomplete automation can cause moreproblems than it solves; increase costsbecause you have to have an operatoranyway even with the automation; andeven create safety hazards that wouldnot exist without it.Like most every technology, properapplication is important - and automationis no exception.BrittBritt Storkson may be contacted viae-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com7WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®MARCH 2020
Notes from the Groundwater Guyby Thomas E. Ballard, P.G., C.H.G.Southeast Hydrogeology, PLLCCommon Causes of Well Failure - LocationI was once contracted by a winery operation to conduct a pumping test on a new well they were plan-ning to drill to support an expanded winery and tasting room. I asked if they needed any assistance inidentifying a good well location, and they told me they already had a location picked out. Since there wasan existing 300-gpm (gallons per minute) agricultural well on the property and they needed 50 gpm for their operation, it shouldhave been a slam dunk, right? Not quite. When we showed up to do the pumping test, we found the well had conveniently been drilled next to a powersource which, in and of itself, is a good thing. The only problem was the power source and the well were located substantiallyuphill from the high-producing agricultural well and where the productive alluvial aquifer pinched out for the most part. Theyended up with a 25-gpm well - half of what they needed - all because they did not pay attention to the geology.More than anything else we have talked about with respect to causes of well failure, proper location of a well relies heavilyon the geology. There are places in the country where you get nice sand aquifers and can put a well almost anywhere to geta good yield, but for most of the country, there needs to be some consideration of the location of a well site with respect togeology, hydrogeology, and environmental factors. In alluvial aquifers, yields are typically more predictable, but even in placeslike the Central Valley of California, a careful review of existing drilling logs is important in locating a new well. This is to takeinto account not only aquifer zones and potential yields, but also environmental and contamination issues. In some parts ofthe country, the presence of nitrates andarsenic can be important considerationsin locating a well.Fractured bedrock aquifers in igneousand metamorphic rocks are often the mostchallenging when it comes to locating asuccessful well, since they have poorprimary porosity and rely solely on thedevelopment of fractures in the bedrockto transmit and store groundwater.Locating productive fracture zones iscritical to siting a good well in thesegeologic environments.Other geologic environments canhave their own unique challenges, but inall cases, applying a bit of geology can goa long way to avoiding a poor well location.TomTom Ballard may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.comAlberta Water Well Drilling AssociationConvention / Trade Show March 26-28Cambridge Hotel & Conference Centre Red Deer, AB, Canada 403-346-2091https://reservations.travelclick.com/108483?groupID=2571486Thursday 26th Palermo Room 3 PM Public Forum 1st Session Alberta Environment & Parks8 PM - Wine & Cheese WelcomeFriday 27th8:30 AM Continental Breakfast and Trade Show OpensNoon - 2:00 PM - Luncheon Guest Speaker Don Henderson, Geologist - Royal Tyrell Museum, followed by AWARDS and PRESENTATIONSPalermo Room 2:00 - 4:00 PM - Public Forum 2nd Session Alberta Environment & Parks 4:00 - 5:30 PM Annual Meeting 1st Session • 7:00 - 11:00 PM - TRADE SHOW OPENNEW!! The consortium will work to understand the scientific andtechnical challenges, as well as opportunities, surrounding pro-duced water. The group’s primary focus will be to develop aframework for filling in the knowledge gaps in establishing newregulations and policies for the treatment of produced water. “The multidisciplinary research approach that we are proposing is specifically needed to fill existing data gaps to inform policydecisions,” said NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu. “This is particularly true in the domain of produced water, where the understandingof reuse for purposes beyond hydraulic fracturing is lacking. NMSU is excited to be at the very forefront of research in this area.”House Bill 546, including the Produced Water Act, instructs the Water Quality Control Commission to look into otheroptions for produced water, including disposition in road construction maintenance; roadway ice; or dust control. The bill alsoencourages the gas and oil industry to choose recycling and treatment options for reusing produced water, instead of relyingon the state’s limited freshwater supplies, and provides jurisdictional and legal clarity over produced water in the state.“As New Mexicans, we know water is our most precious natural resource. I sponsored this legislation to save freshwaterby clarifying and strengthening the rules for produced water while promoting investment and innovation in treating producedwater,” said Representative Nathan Small, a sponsor of the bill along with Representatives Brian Egolf and Rod Montoya. “Iam grateful and excited to see this strong partnership between NMSU and NMED to provide the science we need to safelymake decisions on the best ways to utilize recycled and treated produced water.”The expertise of NMSU and NMED will be strengthened by consortium members from academia, national laboratories, the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, as well as state and federal agencies. NMSU will manage the consortiummembership and process, with assistance from NMED.“By leading the country in creating science-based standards for treated produced water, NMSU and NMED will help usbe responsible stewards of New Mexico's resources, from oil and gas to water,” said Representative Micaela Cadena, who wasintegral in facilitating the partnership between NMED and NMSU. “I am proud of NMSU and our partnership with NMED; togetherwe will lead the nation with timely and crucial research on treated produced water.”G&O

Atany gven tme, you can be way out of baance. For exampe: f you have just started a new busness or career, you just hadyour frst chd, or are n a new reatonshp, you w most key devote more tme and energy to these actvtes, whe gnorngsome of the others. t w become a probem f we stay way out of baance n one area for a ong perod of tme. For exampe,workng seven days a week for 25 years at the expense of your heath, frends, and famy. The key to vng wsey s to stayfocused on what matters for the ong-term, not the short-term.Simplify- Everywhere you ook, fe s gettng more and more compcated. On the surface, technoogy may appear tosmpfy your fe, but there are awaystrade-offs. Here are a few factors that seemto be movng our ves faster and makngthem more compcated: more traffc, n-creased consumer choces, tme demandsof a knds, the cock and caendar thatseem to be movng faster, unmted nfor-maton on thousands of subjects on monsof webstes. coud go on, but am sureyou are we aware of the areas of your fethat seem to push you nto more and faster.We have been ed to beeve more makest better, and faster makes t easer. don'tthnk so. Ony when you become awareof whch areas n fe you are guty ofcompcatng, can you change t.Emotional Baggage- Was t some-thng your parents dd or sad 30 yearsago? Somethng a customer sad ast week?Somethng a spouse or frend sad or ddyesterday? Od baggage s emotona stuffwe carry around wth us for days, months,or years. t s usuay negatve - ke odhurts, resentments, anger, or some kndof pan nfcted by another person. t canaso be carryng around some od gut,faure, or fear whch mpacts our currentreatonshps and fe n genera. Why dopeope hod onto a these od feengsand memores? Od baggage starts to feevery comfortabe after a whe - so comfort-abe, many peope de never abe to et goof these hurts, sghts, and pans. There sone very good reason to et go of a thsbaggage. One of the major contrbutors ofstress today s suppressed emotons fes-terng n the body, takng ther eventua toon some aspect of our physoogy. et merepeat - one of the bggest causes of stresstoday s a of ths od baggage. Drilling Unveils 100-Year-Old Whisky on IceCompiled by Bonnie Love, Editor, WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Ten years ago, specazed drng n the Antarctc was used to recover crates of whsky whchhad been bured n perafrost for over 100 years.The story begns back n 1908, when Brtsh exporer Ernest Shacketon attepted to be thefrst to reach the South Poe. Pror to begnnng the expedton, Shacketon ordered 25 cases ofwhsky as part of the suppes he woud be takng on the trek. The whsky aker, acknay andCopany, donated the sprts to the expedton tea.For over a year, Shacketon and hs crew expored Antarctca and trekked toward the South Poe. Unfortunatey, they were owon suppes and about 100 es fro the South Poe when Shacketon reazed they had to turn back f they were gong to catch theshp before t saed away. On ther way back, they encountered a great dea of hardshps and deays whch neary cost the ther ves.Shacketon’s shp, Nimrod, had sgnaed t was eavng, but Shacketon and hs group had not returned n te, so thegroup decded to set fre to the base cap hopng the shp woud turn back. ucky, the shp saw the soke and was abe toturn around to pck up Shacketon and hs crew. n ther haste to eave before the deady wnter season began, the exporatontea eft behnd a ot of suppes, ncudng soe of acknay’s Rare Od Hghand at Whsky.The whsky woud st on ce for over 100 years before anyone woudearn of ts exstence. Durng ths te, the acknay’s brand woud be sodto Whyte and ackay, and the orgna recpe for the Scottsh whsky wouddsappear forever.Then n 2006, poar restoraton workers found what appeared to be twocratesof whsky under the foorboards of Shacketon’s od hut. The stash wasstuck deepn the ce, too deep for the group to reach t. t wasn’t unt January2010, when workersfro New Zeaand’s Antarctc Hertage Trust woud usespeca drs to reach the crates and brng soe of the to the surface. Ac-cordng to nternatona protocos agreed to by 12 Antarctc Treaty natons, thecrates coud ony be reoved fro Antarctca for conservaton reasons. Whyte and ackay worked wth the Trust to recover soe of the bottes.Once they reached the crates, they were stunned to dscover there were ac-tuay fve crates; three contaned whsky and two contaned brandy. The threewhsky crates were excavated wth one of the fown to New Zeaand to be carefuy thawed by the Trust at the Canterbury useu.The bottes were ntact, copete wth straw packagng, and qud coud be heard soshng around. The acoho content of the whskywas hgh enough to wthstand the -22ºF (-30ºC) teperatures wthout freezng. The Trust but a speca coo roo to defrost thecrates and wated patenty for two weeks as the precous cargo graduay thawed so they coud exane the contents. To theaazeent of any, soe of the bottes even had the orgna abes.Whyte and ackay had a speca request. They wanted a sape of the whsky so they coud attept to repcate the org-na recpe. Under pert fro the New Zeaand governent, the copany was aowed to transport three bottes to Scotandon a prvate jet for scentfc anayss by the copany and The Scotch Whsky Research nsttute. The rest of the stash wentback to Shacketon’s Hut n Antarctca.They were abe to wthdraw a sapeof the scotch usng a syrnge to go throughthe cork. Experts used chroatography anda 15-eber expert tastng pane to studythe sape. Then, Rchard Paterson, thedstery’s aster bender was abe to conethe taste of the orgna whsky. A tedrun of 50,000 bottes of the recreated bendwas ntay produced. The copany evendonated 5% of every botte sod to theAntarctc Hertage Trust to hep fund therwork carng for the four conc expedton hutsn the Antarctc. The bend was so popuarthat n 2012 a second edton was created.The rearkabe whsky s st bengsod today.Editor’s Note: In between our print issues,the WWDRWWDRTeam prepares an electronicnewsletter called E-News FlashE-News Flash. Environmental Monitoringby Thomas Kwader, Ph.D., P.G.WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®HydrogeologistWell Development - Optimizing Well Yield from Screened Wellsn the November 2019 ssue of WWDRWWDRon page 32, Tom Ballard wrote an excellent artcle on themportance of well development for ensurng long lfe of water wells. agree wth hs entre artcle, butwould lke to stress a few key ponts that are crtcal durng the desgnto ensure the long lfe of productonwater wells. 1)The well should be desgned to mantan a pumpng level to reman above the top of the screen, or reman nsde thewell casng n open-hole fnsh (rock) wells. Exposng the screen or open porton of the well to ar promotes the growth ofunwanted bactera. The bactera wll then tend to plug the pore spaces near the well.2)f maxmum producton s a prorty, a “wre wrapped” type screen (wth V-shaped slots) s preferred over slots whch arecut nto the ppe. The slot openngs should be slghtly smaller than the medan formaton gran szed to maxmze flow tothe well.3)f a “gel” type drllng flud s usedto seal the walls of the producngformaton durng drllng, an addtveto break down the mud cake shouldbe used to remove the gel after thescreen s set. Otherwse, full devel-opment may be dffcult to acheve,and the specfc capacty of the wellmay be severely compromsed.4)Choosng the correct developmentmethod. There are dozens of waysto develop a well, ncludng - balng,surgng, overpumpng, compressedar, etc. The most effectve methodof well development s by usng asurge block, whch nvolves movngthe water both n and out of thescreen. The objectve of surgng sto break down the mud cake andremove as much of the fne-granedmaterals and gel as possble at theborehole wall as soon as possble.Once a well begns to fal, unless youtake acton to try to rehab the well (whchs not always effectve), t wll lkely con-tnue to deterorate wth declnng waterlevels and lower pumpng specfccapactes. These facts make ntal welldevelopment crtcal for a long well lfe.Also, t should be noted that wells wthhgh specfc pumpng capactes overtme wll use sgnfcantly less energythan poorly developed wells.TomTom Kwader may be contacted viae-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com19WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®MARCH 2020ENVMay Issue Deadlines! Drilling Into Money Not Boringby Mark E. BattersbyRecession-Proofing Your BusinessWth many fnancal experts and economsts predctng the next economc recesson s just aroundthe corner and others dscountng an economc downturn, there are a number of steps every drllng oper-aton should take to be prepared n the face of ths uncertanty - and to survve.Preparng for a recesson means payng attenton to the operaton’s numbers now - lke savng oncosts or gettng out of debt - to ensure the operaton s n good shape later on.Cash flow s the lfeblood of every drllng-related busness. To keep the operaton healthy, cash needs to contnue flowngthrough. Whle cash flowng out of the busness s unavodable, good tmes or bad, the harder tmes get, the more dffcult tcan be to keep the cash flowng n.There are cheap and easy steps to prepare for a recesson or economc downturn. Whle bg changes, such as delayngcaptal spendng, should not be mplemented untl t s clear a downturn s occurrng, other changes make sense even f a reces-son never materalzes. t can mean shorng up the drllng operaton and ts cash reserves whle the economy s stll boom-ng.Durng a recesson, every drllng operaton and busness s constantly under fnancal attack from all sdes: dwndlngsales, ncreasng expenses, as well as customer and employee retenton problems. Advance preparaton s vtal. Ths doesnot mean hunkerng down too soon, but rather employng sensble survval strateges.A recesson may or may not become a realty n the months ahead. Preparng n the face of ths uncertanty can help everydrllng busness owner, operator, and manager gan market share and grow. That’s why t’s mportant to revew the varousscenaros now, ncludng how the operaton would handle a sharp drop n sales. Whle the last recesson proved there are some crcumstances whch smply can’t be foreseen, a few steps mght lessenthe mpact. To survve a recesson:.Develop future sales goals..Cut expenses, and track cash carefully..Add value, not prce..mprove communcatons wth customers..Underpromse and overdelver..Keep marketng. Don’t be tempted to cut or elmnate marketng actvtes.Unfortunately, there s nothng that wll make any drllng operaton 100% recesson-proof. However, makng the rght movesnow, can help ensure the operaton survves tough tmes and, perhaps, even be able to proft from them.Mark Mark E. The Un-Comfort Zone IIby Robert Evans Wilson, Jr.Not the End of the World ~ But Felt Like it took a draa cass n coege. t was fun. 26MARCH 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Using Electrical Resistance Heating for Groundwater RemediationCompiled by Bonnie Love, Editor, WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®Eectrca resstance heatng (ERH) has been a wdey-used process to cean contamnated so and groundwater for years.t works by usng eectrcty and t’s very effectve.t starts by nstang eectrodes nto recovery wes dred throughout a contamnated ste. An eectrca current s passedthrough the so and between the eectrodes, causng the so and fuds to heat up. Ths causes the underground contamnantsand water to evaporate, creatng n stu steam and vapor. The vapors, steam, and NAP (nonaqueous phase quds) are recov-ered to the surface usng a vacuum.ERH systems can be used at any depth and used n both the vadose (underground water above the water tabe) and sat-urated zones. The eectrodes are nstaed wth conventona drng rgs, but can aso be done usng horzonta or anguardrng technques. The horzonta spacng between eectrodes s typcay between 14-24 feet. So wth a hgh natura organccarbon content may sow or prevent recovery of some organc contamnants. The ERH process for remedaton purposes was deveoped by the Department of Energy and Battee usng sx-phaseeectrcty and a hexagona eectrode array. However, ths ed to codand hot spots n the targeted ocaton. Three-phase power and tr-anguar eectrode arrays are more commony used today.Ths technque was successfuy used at the Cameot SuperfundSte n West Fargo, North Dakota. The ste of a former dry ceanngfacty, the so and groundwater were contamnated wth tetra-choroethyene, trchoroethyene, and ther degradaton products.Approxmatey 13,800 cubc yards of so was treated over a nne-month perod. Usng 56 dfferent eectrode and vent assembes,aong wth a network of horzonta vapor extracton wes, approx-matey 5188 pounds of contamnated mass was extracted. TheEnvronmenta Protecton Agency samped the area and confrmed theprocess reduced the groundwater concentratons of contamnaton99.98% whe the so concentratons were reduced 99.96-100%. n addton to beng a safe and effectve method for ceanng contamnaton, the ERH ceanup process usuay takesbetween sx and nne months as opposed to conventona treatment methods whch typcay takes years.Photo of the Camelot Superfund Site workcourtesy of TerraTherm, a Cascade Company.WTR

29WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®MARCH 2020Patented Sonic Pile-Anchors Set to Revolutionize Building Foundationsby Nancy Argyle for Sonic Drill Corporationt’s been a ong te cong. ore than 50 years passed before sonc drng cae fu crce - back to one of ts earest uses as a pe drver. Today, the technoogy s far superor and set to revoutonze the png ndustry wth a just-patented ethod. But, frst, a tte hstory on how we got here. Back n the 1960s, an eary sonc pe drvng rg enjoyed a sa easure ofsuccess usng two Word War  ary tank engnes that generated a whoopng 1000 horsepower but, despte uch effort anda far bt of oney, by the 1980s, sonc pe drvng research had fzzed out wth tte to show for 20 years of effort. That’s about the te that Ray Roussy, a Canadan engneer, entered the pcture. Hs work on sonc drng had suddenyended when hs epoyer, Hawker Sddeey, a Brtsh aerospace copany, decded to abandon sonc research.Roussy was convnced the technoogy was vabe - not so uch as a pe drver - but, nstead, as a drng rg that coudoffer faster speeds and the uch-apprecated abty to dr through xed sos where other rgs woud ja up. He decded tocontnue the research but on hs own and wth no fnancng. t was not an easy road but, wth perseverance, Roussy patentedand successfuy coercazed odern sonc drng technoogy as we know t today. After 35 years of effort, Roussy’s four-te award-wnnng patented technoogy s now used n aost a drng appcatonsand around the word on sx contnents. Drng three to fve tes faster through xed sos, usng no drng ud (so essess to cean up) and abe to provde contnuous core sapes, sonc drng technoogy has been ebraced by any ndus-tres ncudng nng, geothera and envronenta. Why use a sonc dr for pe drvng when another woud do?Workng or vng near a constructon ste can generate ore than a few headaches but none worse than stenng to pesbeng drven nto the ground. The repettve percussons and thupng ground vbratons are enoughto ake ost peope reach for the nearest botte of pankers. Despte the headache factor, though,pes are ntegra to the foundaton of any budng.Thanks to contnued research, three sonc pe nstaaton optons are now avaabe - a deve-opent that had been antcpated for neary a year but was kept secret unt patents coud be fed.“t’s been a te-consung but exctng project to fnay reaze the png nstaaton potenta nsonc drng technoogy,” sad Roussy.Athough Roussy spent the better part of hs fe and career perfectng hs sonc drng techno-ogy, that ddn’t stop h fro refectng on ts earest roots n pe drvng. “ aways beeved the soncdrwoud, one day, fnd ts orgna nche agan n budng foundatons,” sad Roussy. 32MARCH 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®The Right Tool forCore Sampling in Soft SedimentsAdapted from Information by Royal EijkelkampBefore deepening the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, engineers need to know more aboutthe geology beneath the waters. Belgian drilling company Geosonda recently completedsediment sampling on the canal using a patented sampling system, the AquaLock 70by Eijkelkamp. The project was carried out froma barge using the SRS ML SmallRotoSonicdrill equipped with the unique sampling system.Hans Jacobs, team manager for the com-pany’s drilling department, led the project.“Geosonda is active in soil research for en-vironmental, geotechnical, and archaeology-related projects. During this project, we workedfrom a barge in Ghent-Zelzate to take sedimentsamples from the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. The layer of sand just below the silt layer isvery important in this case, because the canalwill be deepened to a certain depth. However, before the work can start, the purpose of the material to be removed had to be investigated. In addition, this research helps todetermine the correct way to excavate or dredge the riverbed.”When an engineering firm tasked the company with taking 16-foot sediment core samples from the river, Geosonda decidedthe right tool for this job would be Eijkelkamp’s AquaLock 70 system. This system uses a piston sonic proof sampler. Before drilling, theAquaLock is filled with water, which locks the piston below in the cutting shoe. The AquaLock is vibrated down directly to sampling depth where it takes along and practically undisturbed sample. The AquaLock stays empty until thepiston is unlocked. Lowering push rods through the drill pipe opens the valveon top of the AquaLock, which unlocks the piston, allowing it to move freelyand take an undisturbed sample. After sampling, the spring push rod is removed, which causes the valveto close, creating a vacuum which holds the sample during retrieval of theAquaLock sampler. Once retrieved, high-pressure water is applied behindthe piston for sample extraction. This system is particularly helpful with continuous sampling as no cas-ing is needed and the blocked piston will displace a collapsed hole. The de-sign of the system provides an enormous advantage when drilling in fine, wet, or even slurrified materials and leads to qualitysample recovery. In fact, this system was specifically developed for alluvial deposits and soft sediments. Although these for-mations are pretty easy to drill through, it can be difficult to get high-quality samples from them. This is especially true for hy-drogeology, such as heaving sands, tailings, delta, and maritime formations, etc.Geosonda understood the value of using the AquaLock and its sonic drilling systemfor this particular project. “Geosonda has several drilling techniques in-house, but sonicdelivers the best quality and full recovery in these softer formations time after time. These good quality samples ensure we can makea very accurate description, which isvery important for an in-depth study of the water. This allows us to formulate fantastic, detailed descriptions and take high-quality sediment samples,” stated Jacobs.“Looking back at this project, I am very satisfied. We finished faster than we thought, and we worked very effectively with the crew on the pontoon. I expect that we will carryout many more of these kinds of projects in the future, especially in combination withthis SRS-ML and the AquaLock in the Eijkelkamp SonicSampDrill. It’s a technique thatallows you to make a quick screening and get high-quality samples,” he concluded.AquaLock combines the advantages of the very rapid, smooth, and powerful sonic drilling technique with the advantagesof a piston type core sampler. It can be used for continuous sampling or discrete sampling and is available in three differentdiameters to match the requirements of each project. The barrels are made of stainless steel and contain a valve-operateddrive head, internal floating piston, as well as a choice of cutting shoes and ring bits for differing lithologic conditions. Association officials noted the recentsurvey indicated most contractors expect to keep adding workers in 2020. The downside, even more respondents found itdifficult to fill positions in 2019, and expect it will be equally hard or harder to do so in 2020. “More than four out of five respondents to our survey said they were having ahard time filling salaried or hourly craft positions in 2019,” said Ken Simonson, theassociation’s chief economist. “Nearly two-thirds of the firms say that hiring will behard or harder this year. In light of those staffing challenges, costs have been higherthan anticipated for 44% of respondents and projects took longer than anticipatedfor 40% of them. As a result, 41% of respondents have put higher prices into theirbids or contracts and 23% have put in longer completion times.”Simonson observed both the number of unemployed workers with recent construc-tion experience (489,000) and the unemployment rate for such workers (5%) were thelowest ever for December in the 20-year history of those series. He said these figuressupport the survey’s finding that experienced construction workers are hard to find.“Contractors are confident that there will be plenty of projects in 2020,” Simonson added. “Our survey found that for eachof 13 project types, more contractors expect an increase in 2020 than a decrease in the dollar value of projects they compete for.”Association officials said the optimistic outlook for projects depends on having an adequate supply of qualified workers.Officials believe the Trump Administration and Congress can help recitfy the problem by doubling funding for career and technicaleducation over the nextfive years, passing the JOBS Act to expand opportunities for students seeking alternatives to college, and allowing employers who demonstrate an unfilled need for workers, to bring them in from outside the U.S.“Construction can play a major role in sustaining economic growth, but only if the industry has an expanding supply ofboth qualified workers and new entrants to replace retirees,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer.“Construction firms are working hard to overcome labor shortages, but federal officials must do their part by adequately fundingcareer and technical education, making it easier for students to qualify for loans for short-term technical education programsand putting in place needed immigration reforms.”C&GCONSTRUCTIONDISCUSSION

38MARCH 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®U.S. Moves to Reduce Permitting TimeAdapted from Information by the U.S. White HouseThe National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) turned 50 years old in 2020. The law was put in place to inform decision making, but over the years, complying with the regulatory requirements has become unnecessarily complex and time consuming, delayingimportant infrastructure projects.NEPA requires federal agencies to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of major projects such as roads and bridges, rail and water infrastructure, or conventional and renewable energy projects. Given the importance of infrastructure investment toeconomic growth, President Trump directed the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) to modernize the federal government’sNEPA regulations. CEQ then issued a notice of proposed rulemaking detailing its modernization plans.CEQ’s proposal is the first comprehensive update to the regulations thatimplement the NEPA law in over 40 years, and evidence demonstrates thechanges are sorely needed. According to CEQ data, completing the averageenvironmental impact statement (EIS) process takes over four years. The delayis worse for highway projects in particular, with many statements taking over sixyears and some taking decades.Greater infrastructure investment brings broad benefits, including reducedcommute times, fewer accidents, more efficient and profitable firms, andgreater employment. Construction Employers of America’s 2018 paper on infra-structure investment explained why the costs of delays to infrastructure invest-ment are high. A study by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) esti-mated failure to properly maintain the nation’s infrastructure is holding back thecreation of hundreds of thousands of jobs and reducing annual incomes by$3400 per household.NEPA modernization will reduce the average time to complete an EIS, inpart through increased interagency coordination within the federal government.Often, project sponsors are required to obtain approval from various agencieson permitting decisions to advance their project. NEPA serves as the umbrellastatute for coordinating environmental reviews. In the past, reviews for projectsinvolving multiple permits were conducted sequentially instead of concurrently, and in some cases, there was insufficient coordina-tion among agencies. CEQ’s proposed NEPA updates not only improve coordination and communication between agencies, theyalso set a goal for completing environmental reviews for major infrastructure projects in two years. The federal government will still perform all environmental reviews as the law requires, just now with greater efficiency.Modernizing NEPA to realize the benefits of improved infrastructure follows the Trump Administration’s commitment to regula-tory reform, which includes greater transparency, improved benefit-cost accounting, and deregulation. As President Trump said in amessage on NEPA’s anniversary, “While the goals of NEPA remain the same as they did 50 years ago, the environmental reviewprocess designed to improve decision-making has become increasingly complex and difficult to navigate.”Given the high costs of excessive permitting delays, and the importance of improved infrastructure for economic growth, thereis much reason to expect NEPA modernization will improve the American economy, lives, and public safety.Infographic courtesy of ASCE.Three Steps and You’re Done! They had become inspired by Seth and his sto-ries of the work in Guatemala. They came to see for themselves what it means to go to a totally strange place and minglewith people who can’t understand what you say, nor you them, and do something for them that will change their lives. Whenit’s all for no pay, no material reward, and really nothing to gain but the experience, is it worth it? A resounding yes!Seth made available the old Mayhew drilling rig he had owned for many years. He gave us a rock-bottom price and weprovided the money to rebuild and refurbish the old rig. Water For Life then shipped it to Guatemala and Seth came downlast year to drill the first six wells with the old rig he knew so well. This year, he came back to do more and brought friends to help him.Gary was ready. The rig had been serviced, the Loomis truck with the crane was ready, as well as one of our crew cab 4x4 trucks. The day after they arrived, Gary pointed them off down the road to the first drilling spot. A Christian man started a school andclinic about three hours away, and he needed water. He had been trying to get by on trucked-in water supplies, but the delivery washit or miss, and the water situation was sometimes critical.Seth and his friends were there to change that. They set to workimmediately, getting the site ready and setting up the rig. The nextmorning, Seth fired up the rig and down they went. The earth was nothard and drilling went fast. After one day, they were at 260 feet and test-ed the well at 20 gallons per minute. No problem. They set a pump at 160 feet and took things down. Off to the nextvillage, up the road an hour back toward our headquarters. Just likethat, the life of each villager was changed. Such a little thing, with sucha huge effect, thanks to the Good Lord and folks like Seth. And thanks to all of you who support Water For Life. Seth had this to say: “Tonight my heart is full, even though we spent two tough days on a well. After we got the rig down andeverything picked up, we had about an hour meeting with the villagers. They thanked us and told us we are an answered prayer anda gift from God. They took good care of us while we were there and were more than willing to help. Controlling Flyrock is EssentialAdapted from Information by the Office of Surface MiningFlyrock is the debris ejected from a blast which travelsthrough the air or along the ground. It is not only dangerous,it can also be deadly. Managing flyrock capable of travellingthousands of feet from the blast, can be challenging. Themost dangerous cause of flyrock is ejection from a crack orweak zone in the highwall face where gases violently vent. Itis similar to a rifle where the expanding gases eject a projectile. This could be why the ejection of stemming from of the top of ablasthole is called rifling. A blast designed to horizontally dis-place overburden material with explosive energy is calledcast blasting or “engineered” flyrock, which moves material ina controlled, safe way.The same factors which cause excessive airblast andground vibrations have the potential to cause flyrock, which isthe number two killer in mining operations. This is one of thereasons it is crucial for blasters to understand and control thefactors leading to the creation of flyrock.Common Causes of Flyrock:)Overloaded blastholes with too much explosive materials)Heavily confined charges or the lack of relief (such as liftblasts))Explosives loaded into materials which are less rigid and tend to flow instead of break, like mud seams, fractures,and/or voids)Insufficient front-row burden, causing front-faceblowouts)Burdens and spacings too close together (results in high powder factors))Not enough stemming material)Inadequate delay between holes in the same rowor between rows; detona-tors firing out of sequence)Deviation of blasthole detonation from the intended sequence)Changing geology or rock type)Spacing and burden exceeds borehole depth)Angled boreholes)Secondary blasting)Human error, improperly loaded blastsControlling Flyrock:(Accurately measure the burden for each blasthole, and be aware of thetrue burden for each hole along the free faces.(Be aware of the powder factor and total charge-weight loaded, so holesare not overloaded; always measure explosive quantities or tape the holeswhile loading.(Effective communication between the drilling and blasting crew is crucial. The drill operator should pass along information regarding unusual geologi-cal conditions, such as mud seams, voids, or other weak layers encounteredduring drilling.(Use adequate stemming and stem through incompetent zones, usingcrushed stone for stemming.(Place primer lower in the hole, increase delays between rows, and reduceburden in back rows.Remember, flyrock is one of the most dangerous effects of poorly controlled blasts which can cause property damage, personal injury, or death. 42MARCH 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®The hole in this rock face, shown with yellowdashes, deviated as it intersected the rockjoint region. Protecting Long Island’s Sole-Source AquiferAdapted from Information by theNew York Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Geological SurveyThe New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced a new monitoringwell will be drilled in Freeport, Nassau County. This well is the first of 25 being drilled throughoutthe area to support a comprehensive groundwa-ter study of the Long Island sole-source aquifersystem. Most of Long Island is completely dependenton groundwater from the underlying sole-sourceaquifer system. This system provides more than400 million gallons a day of freshwater to over 2.8million people in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Asthe name suggests, it is Long Island’s solesource of water for the Island’s population. The Long Island Aquifer System is comprisedof several freshwater aquifers ranging in increas-ing depth from the upper glacial, North Shore,Jameco, Magothy, and finally the Lloyd aquifer, which is a largely untapped layer containing theoldest water, some of which has been held in theAquifer System for more than 5000 years. One ofthe main issues the study will focus on is saltwa-ter intrusion. Long Island is surrounded by salt-water at the surface and at varying depths belowground. The freshwater which replenishes the aquifer system, slowly flows through and eventually exits the aquifer systemat the coast, keeping the saltwater in the sediments offshore from pushing landwardbeneath Long Island. The area where the fresh groundwater flowing seaward to thecoast meets the salty groundwater flowing landward toward the shore, is called the43WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®MARCH 2020Diagram courtesy of New York Departmentof Environmental Conservation. Not to scale.WTRProtectingLongIslandcont’donpage48.
Autonomous Drilling with a Miniature Drilling RigAdapted from Drillbotics®Entering its sixth academic year, the 2019-2020 Drillbotics®competition continues to expand. The international competi-tion involves undergraduates, master, and doctoral students from a variety of disciplines who design and build a small drillingrig that uses sensors and control algorithms to autonomously drill a well asquickly as possible, while maintaining borehole quality and integrity of the rigand drillstring. A rock sample to drill is provided by SPE’s DSATS (Society ofPetroleum Engineers’ Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section). This year, students can compete in one of two offerings:Group A- Design and build a miniature drilling rig and autonomously drill adirectional well through a homogeneous rock sample to a given plan. The focusfor 2019-2020 is on automation and control. Each team must also have a safetyplan which covers all foreseeable hazards and how they can be mitigated.Because most of the rigs have equipment spinning very fast, some form of pro-tective cover must be included in the rig design. Teams must consider risks dueto handling the rock, avoiding injury from rotating machinery, electrical shock, and more. How the team communicates before and during rig operations isalso important to the judges.Group B- Design, model, and simulate controls for a miniature directionaldrilling rig and demonstrate on a virtual drilling system. This provides an alter-native for universities that have limited resources - the focus is on modelingand simulation, with no physical rig construction required. In the past, teams freely shared lessons learned, which more rapidlyadvances the science of drilling automation. Everyone said they had a lot of funwhile learning things that were not in textbooks. Students also participated inrelated events at conferences and workshops, meeting and networking withindustry leaders in drilling automation.www.starironworks.com257 Caroline StreetPunxsutawney, PA 15767800-927-0560 • 814-427-2555Fax: 814-427-5164SERVING THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRYServing the Drilling Industry44MARCH 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®G&OCongratulations to the Mewbourne School ofPetroleum & Geological Team from the University ofOklahoma who took first place at the 2018-2019Drillbotics®Competition. Through the Back Door!by Jim KuebelbeckWhen Robert Fulton insisted he could build a commercially viable steamboat, they laughed. But in1807 his ship, the North River Steamboatchugged its way up the Hudson River and just like that, thelaughter stopped.Similarly, when Louis Pasteur posed his theory that diseases were carried by tiny little unseengerms, they laughed long and loud. But when the results of his research began saving lives, the laughtergrew fainter and fainter, and ultimately died away completely. When Guglielmo Marconi insisted he'd discovered a way to send messages through the air, oh, how they laughed. Thelaughter even echoed throughout Europe. Marconi would often ask, “Who are these laughers, and don't they have day jobs?”Few people laugh at him today. They laughed raucously when the Wright brothers first announced they had successfully made and flown a heavier-than-air flying machine. The brothers were incensed, and gathered a few people together to witness the fact. When the peoplesaw their machine actually become airborne, they were so amazed, they began to laugh again, but in a different way. “Whyare they still laughing?” Orville asked his brother Wilbur. “Is it my mustache?” Wilbur said to him, “I don't think it's your mus-tache. They must be laughing at something else.” Despite the laughter at the time, few people laugh at flying machines today. No laughter can compare, however, to the laughter that ensued when Charles Darwin, who after years of research, pub-lished his treatise “On the Origin of Species”. Of course, in some quarters, the idea of evolution continues to evoke a bit oflaughter. It is no different today when people are confronted with things that do not fit into their ingrained belief systems. As recently as 1985, I, Jim Kuebelbeck, a little-known water dowser from central Minnesota (USA) was ridiculed in aneditorial published in my little hometown biweekly newspaper. Despite the fact I had successfully located many hundreds ofdocumented satisfactory groundwater sources by my dowsing methods where all previous efforts had failed, the writer of theeditorial (then director of an otherwise well-respected water well association) chose to write, “There is not a single shred ofevidence to support any of the claims made by 'water witchers' (dowsers) anywhere on the face of the earth. I have deter-mined that the concept, therefore, has no basis in fact, and that the ability to locate groundwater sources by dowsing is nobetter than chance alone would allow.” The writer had done no research, or attempted to verify the testimonials of the manywater well drilling professionals who had often been assisted by my water dowsing methods. My response to the writer of the erroneous statements made in the editorial was to write, “In most cases when a personsteps from the arena of one's personal expertise, and attempts to expound upon another, that person often reveals his (orher) ignorance about the other. I find it especially disconcerting, however, when a man whose unquestionable expertise inone area of human endeavor, (and iswidely known and respected) makesstatements which publicly reveal notonly his lack of knowledge, but hisunmitigated intolerance of another areaof human endeavor. In reference toexpounding upon something aboutwhich one knows little, my late fatheronce told me, ‘It is better to remain silentand be thought a fool, than to openone's mouth and remove all doubt. Inthis particular case, it would have beenbetter had you remained silent’.” The statements and comments inthis article are based on information andreferences believed to be true and fac-tual. freshwater/saltwaterinterface. If too muchfresh groundwater ispumped from an aquifer near this interface, salty groundwater willmove inland, affecting the water quality in wells near the interface. When a well pulls in salty groundwater, referred to as saltwaterintrusion, the water is no longer safe to drink. Once this happens, the aquifer cannot provide drinking water until the saltwater isflushed out naturally by freshwater, which can take decades andeven centuries. New York State is partnering with the US Geological Survey(USGS) to examine concerns of overpumping, saltwater intrusion, plume migration, changes in groundwater outflow to surfacewaters, and sustainable yield for changing hydrologic stress condi-tions. The data collected from the monitoring wells will help officialscreate a groundwater flow model, providing water managers withvital information necessary to manage the region's groundwaterresources. The first well, located in Nassau County’s Brookside Preservealong the Freeport and Baldwin border, is being drilled to a depthof 1300 feet by Delta Well and Pump Company. The remaining 24additional wells will be drilled in Nassau, Suffolk, Kings, andQueens counties at a later date. Nassau County Executive LauraCurran said, “Drinking water is a precious resource. The new wellin Freeport will enable the USGS to comprehensively studygroundwater to test the quality and assess the health of ouraquifer.”48MARCH 2020WorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®ProtectingLongIslandcont’dfrompage43.Open the Doorway to all theEvent Photos during Utah Ground Water Association 2020To see more photos from this event,go to www.worldwidedrillingresource.comFeel free to download at will and print thephoto(s) of your choice.Compliments ofWorldWide Drilling ResourceWorldWide Drilling Resource®®.Photos are copyrighted and released for personal useonly - no commercial use permitted.

This has brought their interest to find waterbefore they drill, which is what we do.They call me and I go out to meet them. Some ask howit works, wanting to know how I find water. I can teach thebasics in about 20 minutes, which gives a lasting idea and may also be helpful inmany other ways. For the people who are interested, I teach them to sense theenergy of water underground. Then I ask them what their definition of seeing sightis. Very few have the definition, so I ask if they can see from here to the top of themountain. They say yes. Then I ask to a car down the street? Yes again. To thatdog over there? Yes.I then ask what they think if I tell them they cannot see from here to the top ofthe mountain. They may think I am out of my mind, and they really do not want tosay it. So they generally just look at me with a confused look and a smile like “real-ly”, and I say the reality is that they cannot see from here to anywhere.I let them fuss or think about it for a short time, then repeat something I heardin grade school. The sunshine lights up an area, the light coming to your eyes isthe energy received, your brain receives the energy in color, then forms a picture. So no light, no vision. What is vision? It is your eyes sensing incoming energy.Your whole body receives incoming energy. So then I ask, “What have I taught you? I have taught you to sense or seeenergy you were not aware of awhile ago. Now that you know about sensing ener-gy, you should be able to learn to sense many other energy forms like blind peopledo - like if a car is coming at you, you can sense it long before you are in danger.Seeing is sensing, so sensing is seeing.”HaroldHarold White may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.comEXB
