BAUER Showcases New Rigs at bauma 2013 Adapted from Information Provided by Bauer Group Earlier this year at bauma 2013, international construction and machin- ery manufacturer BAUER Group (BG) introduced its new line of drilling rigs called the PremiumLine. The PremiumLine incorporates multifunction rigs for a wide variety of appl icat ions. This new l ine of rigs enables al l r o t a r y d r i l l i n g techniques to be i m p l e m e n t e d , including: w kel ly dr i l l ing with and without a casing oscillator w c l ass i c CFA (continuous flight auge r ) sys t em drilling w CCFA (cased continuous flight au- ger) drilling w soil displacement pile drilling When first designed, a key objec- tive was to optimize all safety features on the new line of rigs. This included incorporating fall guards, handrails on all walkways, lift-up design hatches, and intergrading ladder access and walk-on platforms to the uppercarriage. A new cab design, an array of cam- eras, and state-of-the-art layout also provides ideal visibility for operators. Other key features of the PremiumLine rigs include: w Ability to carry out all kinds of ground improvement techniques w Fitted with a Tier IV i engine con- forming to the highest exhaust emis- sion standards w Base carrier units specified to at- tain the lowest noise emission values w Drilling and drawing assist func- tion for “single-pass” drilling opera- tions w State-of-the-art electronic systems make the rigs easy to control and highly responsive w Equipped with Bauer kelly visual- ization system to ensure the kelly bar is operated optimally and with low wear w Tablet PC with built-in wireless functionality is installed in the new PremiumLine cab w Optionally fitted with BC’s trench 16 AUGUST 2013 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Preconstruction on New NY Bridge Underway Adapted from Information Provided by The New NY Bridge New York citizens traveling over the Hudson River will be seeing drastic changes to the Tappan Zee Bridge, also known as the NY Bridge, this year. More than a year after President Obama approved New York Governor Cuomo’s request to begin the Tappan Zee Bridge Project, preconstruction geo- technical survey’s have started. The tests will determine soil condi- tions in and near the Hudson River. Ad- ditional engineering analysis of the river bottom is also underway. Testing is con- ducted with small drilling rigs located on land just under the bridge. Once all tests are completed, designers will use the results to help determine pier size and foundation support for the new bridge. The existing Governor Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee toll bridge opened to traffic in 1955, at a total length of 16,013 feet and provided 139 feet of clearance over the Hudson River. It was built to carry 100,000 vehicles dur- ing the peak of the day; however, in recent years the traffic volume has grown so much during peak traffic time, the bridge usually has 138,000 vehicles. Replacement of the bridge has been needed for many years. The existing bridge does not meet the current bridge and highway standards and is prone to severe congestion. The new bridge will not only aid in the flow of traffic, but will be upgraded with better safety and secu- rity features. cutters making the rigs suitable as a platform for all commonly employed specialist foundation engineering techniques, and enables them to adapt to a wide variety of different soil types based on a broad range of tools.
