25 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® AUGUST 2013 Geological Modeling for Groundwater Contamination Adapted from Information by ARANZ Geo Limited ARANZ Geo Limited announced the release of Leapfrog ® Hydro 2.0 designed to improve the interface to the flow modeling software MODFLOW and FEFLOW. The 3-D geological modeling software will stream- line workflows for rapid understanding and resolution of complex water problems. ShaunMaloney, CEO ofARANZGeo said, “Quality flow modeling starts with great geological modeling. With Leapfrog Hydro 2.0, geological understanding can be quickly and seamlessly turned into quality flow models, radically simplifying and streamlining workflows. This not only means efficiency gains, but gives hydro- geologists more time to look at multiple hypotheses and increase confidence in their modeling.” Leapfrog Hydro 2.0 has a powerful new engine for exceptionally fast con- struction of interlocking geological mod- els. Hydrogeologists can explore different hypotheses in rapid succession, leading to confident decision making. Dynamic modeling means models are up-to-date with the latest information, so models re- flect new sampling data. The cutting-edge 3-D graphics means visualization is ex- ceptionally clear, giving users a better understanding of the models and facilitat- ing communication to a wide audience. The program is typically used for contaminated site management and allo- cating groundwater. More recently, it was used for modeling saltwater intrusion. “With significant improvements to the flow modeling interface, Leapfrog Hydro 2.0 effectively covers the whole ground- water modeling workflow. This gives our customers a competitive edge as they can rapidly arrive at more robust mod- els that accelerate projects, reduce risk exposure, and save costs; all essential in today’s competitive markets.” Geological models can be used to create both MODFLOW and FEFLOW models. Gridding accurately reflects the geological features and can be given parameters directly from the project’s geology, such as voids from tunnels or caves. Users can easily import MODFLOW and FEFLOW legacy models for compar- ison to current data and construct dynam- ic models. The software is also compatible with OpenGL3.0 for higher frame-rates and more realistic rendering with trans- parencies. Even large numerical datasets, such as subsurface contamination levels, can be analyzed and visualized. John Good, senior software engi- neer for ARANZ Geo said, “Effectively managing groundwater requires a good understanding of the local geology. En- hancements to Leapfrog Hydro’s inter- face with flow modeling software means users can benefit from significant inte- gration and provide better, more reliable modeling results in less time. Leapfrog Hydro 2.0 effectively bridges the gap between geological and groundwater modeling software.”
