WorldWide Drilling Resource

68 AUGUST 2013 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Your View by Bess Cutter I would like to ask WWDR readers for their input on the following scenario: A homeowner’s well has tested halfway between the former and cur- rent EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) recommended limits of arsenic during a July test for each of the past two years. However, the water tastes great and is really clear. Is there any other mineral that, dis- solved in water, could give a "false posi- tive" for arsenic in a water quality test? The well owner has encountered wells whose arsenic tests have changed... and is wondering whether the change could occasionally be a result of a sub- tle change in the testing process. If you have any insight, please for- ward your reply to the e-mail below. Lockheed Martin Corporation recent- ly announced plans to use its experience producing the giant external tanks used on space shuttles to meet the in- creasing de- mand for LNG tanks. Producing LNG tanks requires the processes and capabilities of a large tank structure manufacturing site which the Michoud facility is uniquely designed to support. Lockheed Martin is very famil- iar with the facility’s capabilities and plans to take full advantage of the 43 acres of advanced manufacturing space. The company will be able to manufacture LNG tanks of varying sizes and capac- ities for multiple transportation applica- tions including distribution by land, rail, or waterway, as well as for land-based storage. “Our entry into the LNG tank market is a prime example of how Lockheed Martin is leveraging capabilities and technologies developed for government programs to meet the needs of private sector cus- tomers who drive our nation’s economy,” said Gerry Fasano, president of Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Solutions-Defense. “We look forward to a long-term relationship with the State of Louisiana, and the greater New Orleans area, and to bringing quality employment opportunities to the community.” Lockheed Martin has received initial orders to manufacture cryogenic tanks for fueling LNG-powered vessels. As part of its long-range business plan, the compa- ny will modify the production equipment used for manufacturing the external tanks to cover a variety of LNG supply chain applications. Roy Malone, director of Michoud Assembly Facility is excited about the project. "We are very pleased to add Lockheed Martin's liquefied natural gas tank production to the portfolio of ad- vanced manufacturing work and research under way here," he said. "It is gratifying to see the manufacturing processes and capabilities developed to build large space flight structures being put to use in the energy industry here on earth." Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal was also pleased with the announcement. “Louisiana is at the forefront of the nat- ural gas boom, and we are proud that Lockheed Martin has selected Louisiana to pursue new practical applications and technologies that harness this growing energy source,” he stated. “Their invest- ment in our state demonstrates the confidence they have in our world-class infrastructure, our strong business cli- mate, and our incomparable workforce.” This venture could ultimately lower facility costs at Michoud and free up money for other space exploration goals.
