Too Many Faults by Bill Corey Pentair Water Training Institute When I first saw this fault I thought, “What does that mean?” The too many faults fault reads that you have had 10 faults in less than a half hour. If you read the manual (I know, most manu- als are good for starting the fire to burn the rubbish), really read it, like the dry run fault , which resets itself and turns the pump back on in 10 minutes. How do you get 10 faults in 30 minutes if it takes 10 minutes between faults? Okay, so you see why I asked the question. Then I got to thinking about it and it came to mind. If you were to have an impatient customer who is in desper- ate need of water, he could be down at the drive pushing the fault reset button then pushing the start button, then push- ing the fault reset button then pushing the start button, etc. a total of 10 times. Yep, that would do it. We have a winner! Now the real question, how many people do you really think do that? A few, but very few. So once again I ask, “Why too many faults ?” The true answer is, “What if the drive trips on a fault that isn’t the real fault?” Say, for example, you go to the fault log and it is filled with “open transducer” faults. You count them and there are 15. It has filled up the fault log, but why? Did we really have 15 open transducer faults ? Most likely not. But if you have a ground issue and it hit and hit and hit, it could fill up your fault log. If the drive is not properly grounded, there are several things it might show up as, like open transducer, or you might see a lot of drive not sleeping faults . (We used to call that broken pipe fault , now we call it exces- sive runtime fault .) The point is, if all the faults in the log are the same, it may not be that problem, but a ground problem which can also lead to the drive not giving the correct pressure. The pres- sure reading on the screen would not be the same as a pressure gauge in the system. A pressure relief valve may be opening when the drive says the pres- sure is fine. One of the best tests to see if your drive is having ground issues is to place an AM radio near it. If all it does is crackle, you probably have a ground- ing issue. 72 AUGUST 2013 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Next month, let’s start a discussion on external faults.
