73 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® AUGUST 2013 Using Simple Spreadsheets to Solve Groundwater Issues Adapted from Information by the National Ground Water Association The NGWREF (National Ground Water Research and Educat ional Foundat ion) announced the 2014 McEl lhiney Distinguished Lecturer Carlos Molano, PE. He will present his lecture, Groundwater Spreadsheets: Efficient and Practical Resource for Solving Simple and Complex Flow, Pollution, and Environmental Problems at events around the world. Molano is cofounder and president of Hidrogeocol (formerly Hidrogeologia Colombiana Ltd.) with headquarters in Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama. He is also a professor of groundwater flow and pollution in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Los Andes University in Bogota. In 2012, he received the Distinguished Latin-America Hydrogeologist Award from the Latin American Association for Groundwater Development. Those attending his lecture will dis- cover how to use simple spreadsheets, without any programming or complex mathematics, to solve a wide range of groundwater problems. Everyone from water well contrac- tors, groundwater scientists, adminis- trators, consultants, and ecologists, to environmental engineers, water resource planners, and students will benefit from this lecture. Learn how to apply classic hydro- geology concepts to modern hydrogeology concepts, such as cli- mate change, global warming, ecohydrology, sustainability, environ- mental risk assess- ment, and remediation, through the use of spreadsheets. Various groundwater applications are presented mainly for Latin America (from pre-Columbus and pre-Inca times to cur- rent times where often there is a lack of data and other resources). However, these applications can be used around the world to learn how some cost-effective solutions may be applied for many other situations. Some of the spreadsheet topics include: • Pumping and slug tests, step draw- down, and intermittent tests • Analytical and numerical solutions for groundwater flow and pollution problems • Delineation of capture zones, for- ward and inverse particle tracking for groundwater contamination • Hydrogeochemical analysis • Earth resistivity soundings interpre- tation • Land subsidence • Flow system analysis and impact of climate change in groundwater resources NGWREF makes the McEllhiney Lecture available at no fee for presen- tations to organized groups of water well contractors and other qualified parties. Meetings and conventions of state or regional associations are eligible, as well as foreign associations of groundwater contractors, academic institutions teach- ing water well technology, gatherings of water well regulators, and other bodies with a direct interest in water well design and construction.
