Short Engineering Geologist Tom Francis’ priceless jade pendant was discovered in the Feather River by a man named Boots in the California mother lode near Paradise. It was taken from the collection site to Mr. Boots’ home where he worked on polishing it in his spare time. Chinese jadeite is found in similar stream conditions in Tibet and Burma. A local rock club member, Tom Francis acquired the jade from Mr. Boots’ col- lection and it will be ready for display at the 2014 Tucson, Arizona, gem show. Jade is a precious ornamental stone commonly used in the jewelry trade. As discussed last month, the term jade is applied to two different metamorphic rocks made up of nephrite and jadeite. Tom’s jade is nephrite, a tightly fibrous variety of the actinolite-tremolite series; and tremolite, a white to gray calcium magnesium silicate whose color becomes greenish when magnesium is replaced by iron and the mineral is called actino- lite. Jadeite is sodium-aluminum silicate which closely resembles nephrite. Green is jade's common color, but white and almost black stones have been found. Jadeite is harder than nephrite and has a higher specific gravity. Mr. Francis polished and shaped his pendant and has displayed it at the local rock club show many times. In 2012, the jade pendant stayed home because it wasn’t safe to leave it in the showroom because of its value. Tom is looking for a woman to model his pride jade at the gem show next year. The model must be strong and determined because Tom’s pendant, weighting an estimated 5000 pounds won’t hang com- fortably around just anyone’s neck.
