Four first year college students received awards ranging from $1500-$2000 to help defray tuition costs. The finalists hail from across the country and have demonstrated passion and skill in managing, protecting, and utilizing our water resources sustainably for the future. “The AGWT scholarship recipients this year embody the awareness and commitment to sustainable water use that society as a whole must embrace for the benefit of future generations.” saidAGWT Director of Programs Garret Graaskamp. “Water is required for every facet of our lives from energy production, manufac- turing, sanitation, and food production and preparation. TheAGWT and its schol- arship program sponsors are proud to support these future water engineers and scientists who will help to develop new technologies, policies, and management strategies to effectively ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recharge’ our water resources.” Ms. Lindsey Jones of Short Hills, New Jersey, was one of two AMTROL award recipients this year. She wi l l be a first year student this fall at McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Lindsey has a passion for vol- unteering and supporting the environ- ment. Ms. Jessica Murray is a graduate of Carlisle High School in Pennsylvania, and she also received one of the AMTROL scholarships for 2013. While in high school, Jessica did original research on the water quality of a local spring-fed pond and its suitability as a habitat for cold water rainbow trout. Her efforts won her a first-place award at the 2013 state-level Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences competition. When Jessica is not studying water, she will be swimming in it as a first year mem- ber of the swim team at Juanita College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. She is plan- ning to study environmental science and chemistry and use that knowledge to ensure water resources are utilized sus- tainably. Ms. Mary Jaskowiak received the Baroid IDP scholarship for 2013. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington this fall as a first year to pur- sue a double major in environmental sci- ence and marine biol- ogy. Mary developed a deep appreciation and personal connection to the envi- ronment while on family camping vacations. During her final two high school years at Dundee-Crown High School in Illinois, Mary was instrumental in leading a team of students in restoring a wetlands area near the school. Her life goal is to use her training to manage water resources to achieve sus- tainable outcomes, and prevent degradation of our oceans, rivers, and groundwater. The Thomas Stetson Scholarship for 2013 was awarded to Mr. Mason Oxford who graduated from Ho t c h k i s s H i g h School in Colorado as valedictorian of his class. As a mem- ber of River Watch during high school, he monitored the water quality of the north fork of the Gunnison River. During the summer months he worked on mine reclamation projects including construc- tion of wetlands to mitigate heavy metals from acid mine water runoff. Mason is an avid kayaker and understands first-hand the value of water in the semiarid west. Mason will attend Montana State University this fall to pursue a degree in civil engineering with emphasis on water resource infrastructure.
