Are You Prepared for Floods? Adapted from Information by the State of Florida Division of Emergency Management The Federal EmergencyManagement Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) joined together to inform citizens about flood risks and their potential impact. Areal floods are most common, and can cause considerable damage. They occur where there has been either pro- longed rainfall over several days or an intense rainfall over a short period of time; or when a river or stream overflows and floods the surrounding area. Flash floods occur within six hours of a rain event, or following a sudden release of water held by a dam or levee. River flooding, which can be fore- casted, can still cause extensive damage. Two of the most important things you can do to protect your home, business, and family before a flood are to: have a family or business emergency plan, and purchase a federal flood insurance policy. These safety tips can help you avoid getting caught in a flood: If a flood is likely in your area: o Monitor the NOAAWeather Radio or your local news sources for vital weather-related information. o If there is any chance of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground; do not wait for instructions to move. o Be aware of streams, drainage channels, canyons, and other areas known to flood suddenly. Flash floods can occur in these areas with or with- out typical warnings. If preparing to evacuate: o Secure your home and business by bringing outdoor furniture and equipment inside, and moving essen- tial items to an upper floor. o Turn off utilities at the main switch- es or valves, and disconnect electrical appliances. Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water. If you must leave your home: o Do not walk through moving water; six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet. If you have to walk through water, walk where the water is not moving, and use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you. o NEVER drive into flooded areas, as you and the vehicle can be swept away quickly. If floodwaters rise around your car, leave it and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. o Do not camp or park along streams, rivers, or creeks - especially during threatening conditions. o Be particularly cautious at night when potential flood dangers are more difficult to recognize. Join WWDR to learn about ad- vances in construction and mining, infor- mation technologies, field instrumentation and sensors, automation in excavation and haulage, safety and environmental issues, fleet management systems, and computer-aided process design and opti- mization. This year’s event is in conjunction with the 23 rd World Mining Congress. The collaboration will allow attendees the opportunity to share experiences, knowledge, best practices, and lessons learned. Both conferences will sponsor a joint trade show where the crossover between vendor types will provide the latest in technology and equipment. Researchers, academics, and practition- ers in all areas of the construction and mining industries can network with ex- perts in the field of construction and mining robotics and automation. Find common ground, foster new ideas, and identify unique research and business opportunities in this functional, state-of-the-art facility.
