WorldWide Drilling Resource
70 JULY 2013 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Many years and regulations later, as another generation of drilling con- tractors enter business, rethinking the business functions is required. Are the established functions still relevant? Do they support the strategic needs of the business? Do they meet the health requirements of the county? Are you staying advised of new regulations? Does your company offer internship opportu- nities for today’s youth? Is further edu- cation required for your employees? Are you the primary licensed, certified employee of your firm? Porky retired from drilling long ago. He now consults and offers solutions to others’ drilling situations. He strongly advocates a partnership in the well drilling industry, availing oneself of all the var- ied educational facets of drilling. Today, he provides continuing education point workshops, loading it with drill hints and secrets he has learned while building his own business, which now continues to fourth generation grandsons. The statements and comments in this article are my own and are based on information and references believed to be true and factual. Business Education: Internship, lead- ership, continuing education. Upon marrying into the Cutter fam- ily water well drilling business, some 50 years distant, the only requirement was to practice good business ethics as in “The customer is always right.” The contract was a handshake. Your word was your bond! This was the com- mon practice of conducting business, whether locally, statewide, or operating within other states. This was true while our business was based in the state of Oklahoma. In 1956, Dad Cutter passed away. One week later, our home and posses- sions were destroyed by a tornado. Soon after, Porky was advised his health was in question...he could die. We were wiped out three times within a 30-day period. We repaired what equipment was damaged and sold what was left of the drilling business. Porky’s health became the priority. Mayo Clinic diagnoses offered hope. Porky was in no danger, but would be on medication the rest of his life. Life has a very real way of placing teaching events in your pathway. Youth was in our favor; however, resiliency was required. George E. Failing Company had sold a 1250 Failing along with a Failing 250 drilling rig to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Porky was con- tracted to deliver the rig to Atlanta, Georgia. During the inventory process, Porky advised them if they needed to train someone to drill, he was their man. Porky was hired as research technician for the drilling project. This is how life brought many more lessons. Once the Georgia Tech project was completed, second generation, Cutter and Dad Drilling Company was born. Once again, resiliency was required. The State of Georgia not only had reg- ulations, each county had their unique interpretation of them. It was impera- tive we educate the County Health Departments, County Commissioners, plus the County Boards of Health about our new type of water well construc- tion. We were introducing a four-inch PVC-sealed well into the historically terra cotta-cased bored well (open well, loose cover) State of Georgia. 64, ;6 ;/, #<5:/05, #;(;, (5+ 1605 ;/, (;065(3 903305. ::6*0(;065 65=,5;065 *;6),9
